  • @saxmays wtf does that even mean?

  • What i like the most about Eric Darius is the ammount of energy he brings in his music and alot of players now adays dont have that much feeling and (this may just be me) they are mostly technical. The more of i listen to people like Eric Darius, the more energy im noticing im getting out of my playing.

  • I have mixed feelings about these comments.

Yes he is a good player, however you can say the same about alot of saxophonists so i believe the term " they are a good player" is overused so dont try and blow that off as a thing of you looking at both view points.

However i agree that smooth jazz saxophonists need to get more creative and think outside the box a little and Eric Darius is doing that if you truly pay attention to what he is playing.

  • I'd like to hear a little more harmonic diversity.

  • I disagree with some of the comments. He is fresh and talented and brings a lot to the table. For the younger crowd he is a new generation of Sax. They want to see that enthusiasum, not someone standing there like the Lawrence Welk Show.

Some of these comments sound like they may be from old farts...lol. You know I'm right !

  • @saxmays - I agree. many of the hit young smooth jazz saxophonists (with the exception of jessy j) have not really brought anything original to the world of smooth jazz. They are just "cookie cut" from many of the other smooth jazz greats. For example eric darius has a good sound, but he is too much of a mix of gerald albright, kirk whalum, and maybe everette harp (notice he probably listened to these guys a lot, but didn't even mention them as influences even though they prob are influences).

  • @saxmays lol

  • the movement is SO distracting OMG. Yeah, he's a young cat, come to the Northwest and hear our 18 years olds shred him.

  • Great music! Simply, the best definition for ''smooth jazz''. The sound of the saxophone is just great, the rythm is extremelly catchy and the passion he plays with cannot be described. Beatiful!

  • i am getting a little dizzy watching but everyone has their own style. Can't decide if it's hype or style yet.

  • he moves far to much when he plays

  • "moves far to much..." Dude, flaunt it if you got it! Use it or lose it! Get it while you can! Get your groove on! WTF?? You need to listen more, and watch less!

  • couldn't listen properly because he was moving too much. And he ain't got nothing to flaunt and might as well lose it cause there is nothing there.

  • who cares, he is great....

i meant can you even play at least something close to what he plays.

  • Nice . . .

  • you see that girl? lol at 1:04

  • this guy came to my school today

  • Totally agree with saxmays. smooth jazz sax players sound so alike that nothing ever really sounds new or innovative. i mean, when you immerse yourself in a style, you tend to fall into a lot of the same stuff that so many other players do, and so, the circle just gets bigger and never gets broken. music should be more of a direct line that evolves instead of a circle that just circulates and grows stale.

  • 23-11 doesnt equal all your life...

  • david sanborn kicks the shit out of eric darius

  • im sorry but you guys dont know crap there are many different forms of jazz saying this is not jazz is pure stupidity on your part. Do some research dipsticks!

  • his dancing cracks me up

  • man eric darius is awesome at the saxophone. alto saxophones definately gonna be my next instrument.

  • No, Lenny Pickett had chops!

  • terrible sound from that alto

  • I totally agree

  • I know you probably think you're a sax expert. This is no exaggeration because I don't feel the need to lie about my personal possessions or about my opinions to sound cool, but I have a Super Action 80 Selmer, a Cannonball (which Eric was playing), and an 82 Z Yamaha and i can ASSURE you that the Cannonball is superior to all of them.

  • (I'm referring to saxgrooves below)

  • That is your opinion. What works for you does not necessarily work for everyone else.

  • It's called 'Steppin' Up' obviously by Eric Darius!

  • This guy does him, theres nothing wrong with that. He also probably gets more pussy than most jazz nerds. However, in my opinion, his music is hot bullshit on a humid summer night in the projects.

  • Also well said! This is Not jazz! It's just soooooooooooooooo smoooooooooooooooth!

  • For all the idiots who cant label it. its called smooth jazz. It IS Jazz and it IS contemporary. ITs NOT Herbie hancock, Not John coltrane, NOT Wayne Shorter, not Bebop not swing etc. It IS David sanborn, Dave Koz, KennyG...maybe even Pat Methany and possibly sometimes the Yellowjackets. Theres some pretty big jazz names there. So give it a rest already.

  • I was with you up to the Metheny comment, have to listen to Metheny more than on the surface, also all the good people he plays with. , Charlie Hayden, Michael Brecker (God rest his soul) etc...

  • I believe its not Jazz, because the main element is missing: improvisation. Besides from that its obviously only composed to be running in background like elevators and stuff. I think "Smooth Jazz" is basically Pop music played with modern Instruments.

  • whatever

  • Where is all this hostile Sh!t comming from. Someone doing something positive and all the miserable muther F#ckers come out of the woodwork and talk a gang of Sh!t! Why dont yo mo fos go support a war or something!

  • well i tell u what ! go to my page and tell me if i can play Peace

  • You can argue over the label/category of music ED falls under until the cows come home, the fact is this young man plays the sax exceptionally well and is passionate about the music. If you don't like it sorry but I think it's great to see that there are still real musicians out there. You can have the commercially manufactured digitally cloned pop stars. I preferred the real thing!

  • this is r&b, funk...definitely does not fall under jazz...none of it swings or follows any type of jazz standards

  • He's amazing and ONLY 23!! Other seasoned jazz musicians have nothing on'em :)

  • hater

  • you just gotta love him. my favorite song that he's played/made or whatever is right here, right now. and just so you know, he makes playing an saxofone look easy. i myself used to play the alto sax, but now i play an baritone sax because i like the sound of bass. but listening to eric daruis makes me change my mind.

  • Eric D.... Awesome!!

  • I love Eric and he knows it. lol!!! He moves around cause that is his style and you have to be unique. It's his style and i hope he moves around even more. :)

  • This guy moves around way to much.. he's a real good performer and has a real nice sound ... but I don't really like the fact that he jumps around so much.. CALM DOWN! I doesn't look professional at all.. I meen he can move around BUT THATS JUST TO MUCH! looks bad... well atleast that my opinion..

  • hey...dont diss on my boi. if he wants to move around and get the crowd hype, then let him

  • why do you care dude? he feels the music so he reacts to it with his body. stop being so judgemental.

  • thanks! I see Nelson Rangell everySunday in Denver with his Str8 ahead quartet that dude is so cerebral with his playing he makes me want to quit sometimes

  • Who's better Mike Phillips or Eric Darius?

  • kenny garrett Vs eric darius lol, i wonder who would win that one

  • kenny garrett would definitely win and is way better

  • Most people associate YOUR jazz with an older crowd. So much skill, to bad it's wasted with Walgreens Jazz.

  • i agree with saxcannon921 with "eww smooth jazz", but seriously smooth jazz is for people who cant handle real hardcore bebop, blues etc

  • Ew....giving cannonball a bad name with smooth jazz.

  • yea i dont like smooth jazz but i love cannonball...

  • cannonball is the best. Cannonball, Charlie, Carter, Woods, Brecker, Coltrane, Young, Hawkins, etc...i agree, garrett is better then this guy, but i dont like him too much. =\

  • yea cannonball is #1 for sure...

  • wow....ur gonna kill me if u keep doing those cannonball licks at the begginning of the video....i love cannonball

  • You sound great! Have fun and enjoy!

  • vERY TALENTED YOUNG CAT...

  • you're kidding right?

  • No I'm not. I have heard this cat live several times and we have a producer in common. just because cats choose the more pop oriented style of jazz doesnt mean they CANT play. Being a "smooth jazz" artist myself I can understand the attack on the music from the str8 ahead side due to the watered-down music being put out there right now. However a lot of us respect understand and were influenced by the masters. Dont hate Eric can play on both ends of the fence I have heard him....

  • That's awesome!

  • have you heard some Cannonball play with this Bossa Nova Sextet that dude is so sick

  • I think i have actually.
