Neil, one story has it that a sportswriter commented that the team was fighting like the Irish during a very physical game. The comment by taypo is another, as Notre Dame's students were mostly Irish Catholic at one time. Anyway, for some of us Americans that are Irish Catholic, it's natural that we root for them.
