We didn't need to use optocouplers to protect the laptop as we weren't using high voltage in the circuit. However we did use optocouplers to protect the MCU of the bot from high voltage being used to power the wheel motors.
Unfortunately we are not selling the bot for non-commercial use. I can try to help you out if you have specific questions. Keep in mind that you need to have a background in IC to complete such a project.
