The Othniel Beale House constructed around 1740 by Colonel Othniel Beale, a Charleston wharf owner originally from Marblehead, MA. The pink house is part of Charleston's fame "Rainbow Row. Rainbow Row is the name for a series of colorful historic houses in Charleston, South Carolina. The houses are located north of Tradd St. and south of Elliot St. on East Bay Street. Referred to as Rainbow Row for the pastel colors used to paint all of the houses. A common tourist attraction of Charleston, SC.
This song is very inspiring. Just think, this is how america SHOULD be. Would our founding fathers approve of all the things we see everyday? I think not. Thumbs up if you wish America had more wholesome values again!
Grew up in a 'pink' house in the Chandler subdivision. That little pink house was paid for by 43 years of 50-60 weekly hours of my old man's sweat, blood and stress. He and Mom were finally set to retire in 2008, after playing by the games, saving and investing in what they thought was the safest IRA investments, etc. It was all lost to Bankster Gamblers on Wall Street. A proud man is now bagging groceries to keep them in that "little pink house." "Yeh, ain't that America..for you and me?"
Vevo needs to be scrapped by Youtube, it takes too much of the video off. This song was great on "My Fellow Americans" One of the funniest movies ever by Garner and Lemmon. This movie is patriotic. about 2 former Presidents One democrat one republican They insult each other with. aashole, whore, dickhead and whatnot the whole movie. Just like Grumpy Old Men with Matthow and Lemmon. Couldn't have been better. Glad John added this song to the movie.

@1976dbishop Your actually wrong, this song is about him growing up in Indiana and telling the triumphs of living in America, while also criticizing the U.S. Gov't. And people can interpret music in any way they want. So get your facts straight and stop criticizing others.
I was CRANKING this song while rolling around LA today on 9/11. I was waiting on the first stupid mutha to give me problems. I seen alotta dirty looks from asians and hispanics. No problems. They knew better. This is America.

I think that basically this is saying yeah bad crap goes on in America too BUT that it is a place that's free which is why we have such a diverse culture. Sure there's bad and good everywhere but we're all free really..
Look up his video.. ...All due respect, but this song is actually a criticism of America.. You have to listen to the words.. It's a very powerful song about our misguided goals and ideals in material things.. See;

@NotGodot Everyone in Amerika is super stupid, except me. That's because I happen to know that everything that the Brits have to suffer, will be Americas fate soon enough. The Brits are so stupid, they can't even put their garbage out without getting a fine. They are so stupid, the Queen, and her big eared idiot, gay son, take all their money and buy castles with it. They are so stupid, that at their rate of immigration, there will not be any Brits left in 10 years. That's how stupid they are!
Spooky I live in Australia, have visited America unlike most Americans visiting elsewhere. America is a great place but has many flaws, terrorism, health care poverty, violence to an extreme we cannot understand, come downunder some time and I will show you around. Great music and movies though this song included
@sjij9294 thats why other countries are jealous of americans we are super power and we shall remian that way, pity u choose to have your country govern by a bunch of liberals and socialists, they keep your country poor. we belive in capitalism, and free markets, why we are super power,
@debz12180 No Aussie is jealous of America and your super power image. We are not a bunch of liberals and socialists far from it. Dab if you choose to throw insults do your homework first. Out country is much more rich per capita than yours that has caused world wide recession with your GFC I dont think that means that you have free markets just ridiculous ones. I do like America but glad I live here and glad I am not one
@sjij9294 Despite the rather crappy economy that we are going through right now (so I can see were your getting the poor people and that) I love my country (america). I love the countries that my ancestors came from....such as England, Swedan, Native Americans (Cherokee and some other one), Wales, Scotland, (many countries of the UK really), and Austrailia. :) Although I don't see why you would guess we would inflict terrorism on ourselves....
@sjij9294 I would rather live in America where I know I am free, than to live in some other country and not have the freedoms I have here. Feel free to move Mexico, or Iraq....
A friend of mine returned from South America and Africa and was so happy to be back where something as simple as rule of law existed. He said you just do not know how good we have it! Good food, generaly speaking nice people and police there to help instead of rob you. You are only a simple 911 phone call from all the help you need. Anywhere else, there is only help in certain places or countries.
People seem to only listen to the chorus of the song and think it's patriotic, but they don't understand that the chorus is actually supposed to be rather sarcastic and cynical. Patriotism is alright and all, but it's wrong to think "my country, right or wrong". We are far from perfect, so let's not let patriotism blind us from realizing that we have a long way to go. The median annual household income is around 45,000, which to me is shocking. I love America, and I want to see it improve.
I tend to think of it as a more realistic description of the way things are in this country of the United States of America. Things aren't as halcyon as the rest of the world thinks it is. We are just as real here in America as the people that populate the rest of the world. Despite the natural human flaws you can still love America.
@OceanbornAngel I thought this was more about our loss of the idea of the "American Dream". The poor black man thinks he's got it all; he's happy with what he's got. The rich man in the Gulf of Mexico who is very well off financially, pays money for thrills, bills, and pills that kill; not happy.
We think the American Dream is about having a nice house and money while it's really just about living life happy whether or not you've got money.
Hmmmm....I recall that John Mellencamp, back in his 80's heyday was known more for speaking about small town rural America. He has several songs of this nature as if he was trying to tell us all not to forget about all the regular people as well who don't live in glamorous big cities like New York and L.A. In essence he's trying to say through his music that people from small towns are just as important to the fabric of America as people in urban cities. We can apply this here too.
Loved the video...thanks for putting it together. The way I interpret the song is everyone is living their life and finding small pleasures in the freedoms that we have in this country. If we want to live in a little pink house we are free to do so.
I'm surprised by how many people feel patriotic while listening to this song. Maybe you need to listen again, because you ain't getting the message. Mellencamp is singing about the rich taking advantage of the working class by using the American Dream as propaganda. For example: think about the billions in tax money lost in the recent bank bailout, the increases in executive bonuses, and the never ending layoffs, then give this song another listen.
My mom just went into a nursing home. I dont have enough money to pay rent. Im moving in with my dad. Im not allowed to bring my dog but you know what I can say? Oh well. I live in the US and Ill make due.
Even if we Americans sometimes have it hard, we always pull through and need to remember that we're still one of the luckiest nations on Earth. I feel like this song exemplifies that important idea.
@spooky45678 you mean terrorists' because mentally handicapped don't hate america, and that was a bit harsh, not to me but for the mentally handicapped
I'm not trying to be rude or anything but this song is kinda the opposite of what everyone is thinking it is isnt it.. like pink elephants or whatever its called.. its protesting the wars aint it!! sure I AM CANADIAN!! yea thats right CANADA!! you all know where that is?? the GREAT WHITE NORTH??
@N1095A Oh-Rah Devil Dog.....Nothing like the Marine Corps. Spent 4 years in college to waste my life away. Once I found the Marine Corps, it was where I was meant to be....
@TheBill52 You wouldnt understand man! War unfortunately is a necessary evil. Liberals dont get it though. Go talk to a WW2 vet, hopefully he will enlighten you.
This is just awesome! I attended The Concert for New York which took place on 10/20/2001 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and John Mellencamp featuring Kid Rock was at his best when he played this song that I felt prouder than ever to be an American. As we all know, the concert paid homage to the heroic fightfighters, police officers and rescue workers who saved thousands of lives on 9/11.
This is another protest song. You know Pink Houses like Pink Elephants? Its about the death of the American Dream. It was never meant to be a patriotic song.
Really how stupid are you people. this song is about all that is wrong with the US. This is not a song that is pushing America. It is criticizing it. as is Born in the USA.
@jacsnare No you are stupid for believing that Mellencamp is pushing the Military-Industrial complex or the rampant right-wing nationalism disguised as patriotism. Now I have no problem with the military as long as they realize that they are not gods, nor are they special. They are just people. However I grow tired of hearing idiots scream "America is the greatest and if you don't chant USA all the time you are unpatriotic." That is fully and completely untrue, as is the belief that we are
@SnowyOwls234 No Mr. Owls I will not shut up, nor will I leave. it would be the greatest disservice to those who have been blinded by a nation which pushes nationalism instead of patriotism as the par for the course. The truth always hurts when it shows that we have been duped and lead off the course. I come from a family with a proud military history on both sides, and I love this country for what it could be and the core beliefs. But I hate what it has become since WW2, a country more concered
@SnowyOwls234 with it's military power and strength than what it was actually founded for. The founding fathers envisioned a country where we did not really on a standing army. They envisioned a country where most of the military would be farmers, teachers and productive members of society. They also envisioned a country that sought peace not war at the drop of a hat. But most of all they never wanted a country where loyalty to the flag was a judgment of one's character.
@sunflashbloodmace I'm sorry if 2 large terrorist groups growing in strength in the Middle East isn't more than "the drop of a hat" for you. I guess all those poor people killed on a weekly basis in bombings doesn't matter, as long as they don't happen to us.
@MaskedMumblr Oh and let me tell you why they are growing? Because we are there. The middle east has always had a habit of war religious or otherwise between various factions. However as long as the white man butts out and let's it work it's self out it stays self contained for the most part. and many of those poor people are killed in bombings yes. Tactical Air strikes of the war on Terror by the USAF which apparently cannot tell a enemy location from a school or a hospital.
@sunflashbloodmace Boohoo, we caused some collateral damage. Doesn't everybody? War isn't fair.
By the way, what "white man" are you talking about? Obama is black, and he seems content with war on terrorism, what with the 30,000 more troops he wanted to send to the Middle East. Can't blame the "white man" this time!
@MaskedMumblr First the war was started by white men. Bush, Chaney, and their buddies at Blackwater and Halliburton. Second 2,361,982 civilian casualties out of 2,575,731 total casualties is not not collateral damage. It is 91.7 percent of all casualties. Collateral damage is damage that is unintended or incidental to the intended outcome, not 91.7 of all deaths. If you call 92 of every 100 kills collateral what you're saying is that "hey, I am out of my mind, please section eight me."
@MaskedMumblr Hey, smartass, did 9/11 just cause 'some casualties'? Was Pearl Harbour 'some casualties'? Or does it only matter when Americans are killed? If you believe that... boy, it must be nice living in your weird little head.

Spooky I live in Australia, have visited America unlike most Americans visiting elsewhere. America is a great place but has many flaws, terrorism, health care poverty, violence to an extreme we cannot understand, come downunder some time and I will show you around. Great music and movies though this song included

@sjij9294 thats why other countries are jealous of americans we are super power and we shall remian that way, pity u choose to have your country govern by a bunch of liberals and socialists, they keep your country poor. we belive in capitalism, and free markets, why we are super power,
debz12180 1 year ago

19foreverocker80 1 year ago

MegaNerd93 1 year ago
@MegaNerd93
I tend to think of it as a more realistic description of the way things are in this country of the United States of America. Things aren't as halcyon as the rest of the world thinks it is. We are just as real here in America as the people that populate the rest of the world. Despite the natural human flaws you can still love America.
OceanbornAngel 1 year ago
@OceanbornAngel I thought this was more about our loss of the idea of the "American Dream". The poor black man thinks he's got it all; he's happy with what he's got. The rich man in the Gulf of Mexico who is very well off financially, pays money for thrills, bills, and pills that kill; not happy.
We think the American Dream is about having a nice house and money while it's really just about living life happy whether or not you've got money.

@bcire3k
OceanbornAngel 1 year ago
Loved the video...thanks for putting it together. The way I interpret the song is everyone is living their life and finding small pleasures in the freedoms that we have in this country. If we want to live in a little pink house we are free to do so.
UGAAlum93 1 year ago
I'm surprised by how many people feel patriotic while listening to this song. Maybe you need to listen again, because you ain't getting the message. Mellencamp is singing about the rich taking advantage of the working class by using the American Dream as propaganda. For example: think about the billions in tax money lost in the recent bank bailout, the increases in executive bonuses, and the never ending layoffs, then give this song another listen.

Even if we Americans sometimes have it hard, we always pull through and need to remember that we're still one of the luckiest nations on Earth. I feel like this song exemplifies that important idea.

It was never meant to be a patriotic song.
kommie27 1 year ago 8
Really how stupid are you people. this song is about all that is wrong with the US. This is not a song that is pushing America. It is criticizing it. as is Born in the USA.
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago 4
@sunflashbloodmace You are REALLY stupid and un-patriotic....
jacsnare 1 year ago
@jacsnare No you are stupid for believing that Mellencamp is pushing the Military-Industrial complex or the rampant right-wing nationalism disguised as patriotism. Now I have no problem with the military as long as they realize that they are not gods, nor are they special. They are just people. However I grow tired of hearing idiots scream "America is the greatest and if you don't chant USA all the time you are unpatriotic." That is fully and completely untrue, as is the belief that we are
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago
@sunflashbloodmace shut up you know nothing get out of here now...please....just leave.
SnowyOwls234 1 year ago
@SnowyOwls234 No Mr. Owls I will not shut up, nor will I leave. it would be the greatest disservice to those who have been blinded by a nation which pushes nationalism instead of patriotism as the par for the course. The truth always hurts when it shows that we have been duped and lead off the course. I come from a family with a proud military history on both sides, and I love this country for what it could be and the core beliefs. But I hate what it has become since WW2, a country more concered
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago
@SnowyOwls234 with it's military power and strength than what it was actually founded for. The founding fathers envisioned a country where we did not really on a standing army. They envisioned a country where most of the military would be farmers, teachers and productive members of society. They also envisioned a country that sought peace not war at the drop of a hat. But most of all they never wanted a country where loyalty to the flag was a judgment of one's character.
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago
@sunflashbloodmace I'm sorry if 2 large terrorist groups growing in strength in the Middle East isn't more than "the drop of a hat" for you. I guess all those poor people killed on a weekly basis in bombings doesn't matter, as long as they don't happen to us.
MaskedMumblr 1 year ago
@MaskedMumblr Oh and let me tell you why they are growing? Because we are there. The middle east has always had a habit of war religious or otherwise between various factions. However as long as the white man butts out and let's it work it's self out it stays self contained for the most part. and many of those poor people are killed in bombings yes. Tactical Air strikes of the war on Terror by the USAF which apparently cannot tell a enemy location from a school or a hospital.
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago
@sunflashbloodmace Boohoo, we caused some collateral damage. Doesn't everybody? War isn't fair.
By the way, what "white man" are you talking about? Obama is black, and he seems content with war on terrorism, what with the 30,000 more troops he wanted to send to the Middle East. Can't blame the "white man" this time!
MaskedMumblr 1 year ago
@MaskedMumblr First the war was started by white men. Bush, Chaney, and their buddies at Blackwater and Halliburton. Second 2,361,982 civilian casualties out of 2,575,731 total casualties is not not collateral damage. It is 91.7 percent of all casualties. Collateral damage is damage that is unintended or incidental to the intended outcome, not 91.7 of all deaths. If you call 92 of every 100 kills collateral what you're saying is that "hey, I am out of my mind, please section eight me."
sunflashbloodmace 1 year ago
@MaskedMumblr Hey, smartass, did 9/11 just cause 'some casualties'? Was Pearl Harbour 'some casualties'? Or does it only matter when Americans are killed? If you believe that... boy, it must be nice living in your weird little head.
