Wow it took me ages to find this. Gordon is my granfather. unfortunatly i never got to mean him as he had passed away before i was born so i tought i would do some research on him. thanks very much for the upload.
Oh Gordon ... bless him .... He's just been inducted (posthumously) into The European Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame ..... 22 years after he died. He was in my own band from 1981 - 1982 until we argued in some mountainous outpost in Scotland after being stuck behind a caravan for miles & I fired him. "2 weeks later he played on my 1982 album "A Blast Of Fresh Air", (because he'd been booked for the session) & he played his heart out. We'll never see his like again ... Roger Humphries
I did receive my DVD yesterday. The color and audio is much better than this clip and the " Waving" and tape slow down is gone. The clip you are watching seems to be a master tape shown on television on the " Bravo" network and is unedited. The DVD however, has an edit right at 1.47 . On here, you hear a short " blip", then Mark goes into the fast guitar riff . This section, approx 5 seconds, is missing on the DVD. Wonder if Tony Palmer will ever release the rest of the MSC set?
I Just ordered the DVD from Amazon. I really hope the "waving" and tape slow down from the original film is corrected on the digital version. Regardless, this is a must have, and so far, the ONLY Matthews Southern Comfort video or film I can find anywhere. You would think they would be on a Brit TV show, Old Grey Whistle Test, or somewhere taped live. If anyone has ANY video, please, please post, "Woodstock" would be the song you would think has live footage or TV appearance.
Good news! This and Fairport Convention's performances at Maidstone are now remastered and on DVD! I'm wishing someone would upload the better quality clips of Ian Matthews. And by the way, have you really looked at the audience at this thing? Hippies, kids, grannies, and uh...businessmen.
Well it was a school fete! There were loads of 'family' events going on and the stage was just in the field behind the school. There was no fence or rope so people just wandered about as they wanted. Lovely warm day - a splendid time was had by all! Me included.
Oh how groovy! It seems like such a peaceful and tranquil concert, probally because the music was so beautiful and comforting to all there. I don't know how many times I've watched "My Front Pages" and been on the verge of tears. Do you have the remastered DVD yet? I don't, but if you do please upload the better quality clips of Matthew's Southern Comfort. I gotta get this DVD and soon!
Extraordinarily good footage from 37 years ago! Ian has a nice voice and strangely I saw him in Maidstone 20 years or so later as backup act to Al Stewart.
Yes, just excellent, and such a surprize! Thank you. Always loved Ian's albums and singing w/Fairport. Saw MSC in 71 supporting Deep Purple, but after Ian left.
This is a song, "Southern Comfort," by Sylvia Fricker Tyson (incorporating the traditional bit in the middle which Ian had recorded with Fairport Convention), and Matthews' Southern Comfort recorded it on their second album. The original recording was on Ian & Sylvia's _Nashville_. You might add Sylvia's name to the tags.
Follow-up--"traditional bit" is from "Fair Nottamun Town," of course. I guess the "second album," by which I meant _Second Spring_ was really the first MSC album as a band, as the previous MSC was actually a solo album for Ian Matthews. Also, there's two "t" s in "Matthews" which prevents one from finding this video on a search for "Matthews Southern Comfort" so you might want to add a tag for "Matthews"

How cool Gordon Huntley reacted, after breaking a string on his steel at ca. 2.40. Putting on a new one, with a smile on his face.
