They make it sound actuaries use really hardcore math. That is not the case neither in educatio nor in the workplace. Most actuaries dont have a clue about measure theory or functional analysis. Dont study to become an actuary if it's math you are mainly interrested in.
@rutturu Right on, ruttur! The actuarial profession has been falsely luring promising young minds interested in mathematics with the utter BS that the job involes lots of complex math. Only the EARLY exams incorporate interesting math. You NEVER use advanced mathematics on the job, but actuaries like to act like what they do involves some kind of complex math that nobody but them could understand.
@angelifyification I can't comment on engineers, I was only an actuary. At least most engineers work on tangible things rather than esoteric financial arrangements.

You guys must be stupid. Theres no way 100,000k people will be able to get the very very minute actuarial jobs that exists ( about 19,000). You guys are just saturating the job market. Therefore, pursuing this job is a waste of time because you are just giving businesses to just end up hiring Ivy League students.
This is maybe the most poorly done video I have ever seen. It is hard to watch, there is way too much camera work and why is the host on Rollerblades? Is she trying to make being an actuary interesting? USE A TRIPOD!
I also talked to the boss of the biggest luxembourgian insurance and the creator of clearstream and they both encouraged me to do it (so that's the insurance and the wild financial sector). I'm quite excited as the financial place in Luxembourg is the biggest in Europe although we're the smallest country!!!! SO excited!!!
I'm going to start my master's degree in actuarial sciences next month and pretty excited. It is not all that hard if you have a bachelor in mathematics (from a serious university though). It's not as hard as a PhD in say differential geometry, urgh, my worst nightmare. Anyway, I'm at the free university Bruxelles (best belgium univ and around 100th worldwide, so nothing unreachable for a normal guy)
@khyran what do you think about the bachelor in actuary that some university have? what could the difference be between a specific actuary bachelor and just a masters in actuary ?
@d3rfliw I am a 26 year old from NZ. I don't have any exams to my credit and have been working in the countries tax dept. and a short stint in manufacturing. I was able to get a dream job as actuarial analyst in a consultancy in my city. How did I get it? Well, the sheer determination I had to get into this field meant that I had meetins/coffee with as many professionals around as I could in the field. Eventually 1 of them was impressed with my commitment to get into the field and i got it.
The job outlook for actuaries is good these days. If you posses the skills to pass the exams and are able to pass one or two by graduation with basically any bachelors degree you have little competition finding a job. From there the possibilities are endless whether you go on to become a fellow (passing all 9 exams), or moving onto higher positions in the company. The key here is you are not really considered as an entry level person when you first enter the company you are regarded as value.
@MetaIhead89 the wallstreet journal listed actuaries as the best job (career path) for 2010. Actuaries are in high demand, especially in our current economic climate. Gotta be smart though!
@serbonbon - ofcourse you are referring to completing a major (namely Actuarial Studies) that leads to an initial exemption of the part 1 exams? 60k sounds pretty good.... i guess with just a math/stats major you would start at a salary competitive with other analyst roles - ie. 40k or similar
not true really, 60k is base pay, with anything under that would be someone who has yet to pass any exams. Out of college one exam out of nine is sufficient, from there you go on to pass the rest, companies pay for study time and seminars to help you along the way. They are hard and require tons of time to prepare for there is not just one formula to master, they are extremely comprehensive.
depends on how competitive it is. in south africa (my "hood" ) you wont even get into an interview with fewer than 6 core technical exams(faculty and institute of actuaries) simply because there are more actuaries produced here than most other countries. USA, UK on the other hand you will get big money for having (comparatively) bugger all. Now this isnt to say that south african actuaries are "better" but its certainly more competitive and means base pay is waaaay less - which actually sucks
Mmmm looks like a bad choice for someone who is looking to do music on the side lol, would be like a 15 hour job if you want to be really great at it.
The time I'm happiest in a week is the night before my calculus assignment is due. I smile, laugh, drinking coffee and ice cold water, and a not so bright light.

I'm not that good at taking test, but if you know all the formulas and how there used I think you can do pretty well, but I'm really looking into actuary cause I love doing math.
What's a good grade on the actuary test or percentile grade?
no actuaries work in diversified areas like investments , finance, pensions , life assurance, general insurance, medical and health care, risk management and many more
Well, there is an increasing trend to recognize that actuarial skills can be applied to a range of applications outside the insurance industry. One notable example is the use in some US states of actuarial models to set criminal sentencing guidelines. These models attempt to predict the chance of re-offending according to rating factors which include the type of crime, age, educational background and ethnicity of the offender.
