  • 7:45 What colleges let me take 8 majors? Ha.

  • @ObsidianTeen she means any of those majors will be fine....

  • They make it sound actuaries use really hardcore math. That is not the case neither in educatio nor in the workplace. Most actuaries dont have a clue about measure theory or functional analysis. Dont study to become an actuary if it's math you are mainly interrested in.

  • @rutturu Right on, ruttur! The actuarial profession has been falsely luring promising young minds interested in mathematics with the utter BS that the job involes lots of complex math. Only the EARLY exams incorporate interesting math. You NEVER use advanced mathematics on the job, but actuaries like to act like what they do involves some kind of complex math that nobody but them could understand.

  • @MelTurpin Is that the same for Engineers as well. I heard that they only use 5 what they learn in school.

  • this video is so 90s hah

  • Thumbs up if you go to U of T and realizes maybe you shouldn't have

  • @LankanBrother You go there? How is it?

  • @IllxllI well judging by my comment you should be able to tell it's less than ideal. Well it's good but it's very difficult.

  • @LankanBrother I see. I plan on studying it in Waterloo actually. is it actually good, stable? do you recommend it. PM Me if you have any suggestions or comments please. Or even email.

    Thanks

  • Florida State University! Go Seminoles!

  • Was this filmed during the 90s?

  • @RockyBalboa211 what!? this totally looks like it was filmed yesterday! hahahahaha. i love these cheesy videos :P

  • damn that girl has an annoying voice. I passed one exam, but I couldn't imagine taking like 8 more ones that are 10x harder. Wouldn't it be better to do a job that makes a real difference, such as teacher, fireman, etc rather than being cooped up in an office all day?

  • Actuacompanies who are penny pinching blood suckers. There are many unemployed actuaries including Fellows. With their limited training (i.e to Insurance related fields) they are stuck in the mud. Private consultants have the largest liability exposure of any job. Many "consultants" are basicaly unemployed, but use that term to disguise their situation. I know of no actuary who recommends their children become actuaries.rial profession sucks. Your work is essentially limited to Insurance

  • You guys must be stupid. Theres no way 100,000k people will be able to get the very very minute actuarial jobs that exists ( about 19,000). You guys are just saturating the job market. Therefore, pursuing this job is a waste of time because you are just giving businesses to just end up hiring Ivy League students.

  • lesbo

  • Why does this video have to be so cheesy & annoying? Do young people respond positivley to this? I feel like I need some ritalin now...

  • @QueenSemiramis It feels like it came straight out of the 90s.

  • that girl is fit!

  • There is way too much going on in this video.

  • This is maybe the most poorly done video I have ever seen. It is hard to watch, there is way too much camera work and why is the host on Rollerblades? Is she trying to make being an actuary interesting? USE A TRIPOD!

  • I also talked to the boss of the biggest luxembourgian insurance and the creator of clearstream and they both encouraged me to do it (so that's the insurance and the wild financial sector). I'm quite excited as the financial place in Luxembourg is the biggest in Europe although we're the smallest country!!!! SO excited!!!

  • I'm going to start my master's degree in actuarial sciences next month and pretty excited. It is not all that hard if you have a bachelor in mathematics (from a serious university though). It's not as hard as a PhD in say differential geometry, urgh, my worst nightmare. Anyway, I'm at the free university Bruxelles (best belgium univ and around 100th worldwide, so nothing unreachable for a normal guy)

  • @khyran what do you think about the bachelor in actuary that some university have? what could the difference be between a specific actuary bachelor and just a masters in actuary ?

  • @khyran BELGIUM SUX....india and china rule[im neither]

  • Is it possible to achieve an annual salary of say a million dollars with this job?

  • Lol why does this seem like a video you'd watch in class that was made the year you were born...?

  • my graduating class has 25 actuarial students, about half has passed at least one exam but only 5 got jobs......

  • @anqelicx

    one exam?

    that's horrible.

People in the U.S. have it easy, in most other places 4-5 exams are expected for a college graduate.

  • @d3rfliw I am a 26 year old from NZ. I don't have any exams to my credit and have been working in the countries tax dept. and a short stint in manufacturing. I was able to get a dream job as actuarial analyst in a consultancy in my city. How did I get it? Well, the sheer determination I had to get into this field meant that I had meetins/coffee with as many professionals around as I could in the field. Eventually 1 of them was impressed with my commitment to get into the field and i got it.

  • if you were an actuary what would you do for a living?

well first iw ould take you ou to dinner and then back to my place where i would phy-

  • The job outlook for actuaries is good these days. If you posses the skills to pass the exams and are able to pass one or two by graduation with basically any bachelors degree you have little competition finding a job. From there the possibilities are endless whether you go on to become a fellow (passing all 9 exams), or moving onto higher positions in the company. The key here is you are not really considered as an entry level person when you first enter the company you are regarded as value.

  • god, i love it...it made me cry

  • how is the job outlook for actuaries nowadays?

  • @MetaIhead89 the wallstreet journal listed actuaries as the best job (career path) for 2010. Actuaries are in high demand, especially in our current economic climate. Gotta be smart though!

  • Do you have to be like extremely good in computer science to pursue this career?

  • no, I believe you have to be good at math like probability and statistics

  • Not necessarily. The code work isn't paramount, but definitely desirable. proficiency in programs like SAS or SPSS are probably more important.

  • true dat

  • the pay is really high though

  • pay is awesome. $60k with a good number of exams under your pocket protector - so basically $60k straight outta college

  • @serbonbon err im in uk XD

  • my condolences.

  • @serbonbon - ofcourse you are referring to completing a major (namely Actuarial Studies) that leads to an initial exemption of the part 1 exams? 60k sounds pretty good.... i guess with just a math/stats major you would start at a salary competitive with other analyst roles - ie. 40k or similar

  • not true really, 60k is base pay, with anything under that would be someone who has yet to pass any exams. Out of college one exam out of nine is sufficient, from there you go on to pass the rest, companies pay for study time and seminars to help you along the way. They are hard and require tons of time to prepare for there is not just one formula to master, they are extremely comprehensive.

  • depends on how competitive it is. in south africa (my "hood" ) you wont even get into an interview with fewer than 6 core technical exams(faculty and institute of actuaries) simply because there are more actuaries produced here than most other countries. USA, UK on the other hand you will get big money for having (comparatively) bugger all. Now this isnt to say that south african actuaries are "better" but its certainly more competitive and means base pay is waaaay less - which actually sucks

  • This video is amaizing but...

I dont speak english as good as you guys so... i couldn't get it all

  • pause at 0:34, that dude is GETTIN LUCKY tonight.

    hahhahahahahahahahahahahahhaha

way to go bro, best pick up line ever.

  • @ICantDecryptTheCode I thought he was quite sexy too when he answered lol

  • Mmmm looks like a bad choice for someone who is looking to do music on the side lol, would be like a 15 hour job if you want to be really great at it.

  • was this made in the 80s?

  • Who the hell is the target demographic for this video?

  • The time I'm happiest in a week is the night before my calculus assignment is due. I smile, laugh, drinking coffee and ice cold water, and a not so bright light.

Usually I know which of the questions I did correctly before I even turn them in the next day. I also think it would be fun if my office was like that.

So, actuary, huh? Looks like fun. I'm a computer science major and thinking of changing it. It's be cool walking into your office with only a calculator and pencil in your pocket!

  • woot... any1 can answer my question?

after secondary school, i shall go for SAM then only for uni in australia?

  • can't you be an actuary with bachelor's in math alone?

  • Ya, thats excellent preperation too. Take some upper level stats courses in Probability as well.

  • Thanks for the reply, what do you think of majoring in chemistry and minoring in mathematics by still taking the upper-level electives? Do you think that can still help me prepare?

  • of course. you just need to be motivated to study for the exams. major in what you want and what your passion is.

  • No you need to do actuary exams. They are said to be very hard

  • No, I got a degree in math. But I will have to go through an Acturial studies degree, but I all of the math subject will be exempt because I did it all.

Unfortunately there is no actuary course in Melbourne. SUCKS

  • Actuary in Azerbaijan,seeks job

  • So if I decide I want this, does it mean that ill be hit with a ton of business and economics to learn, I mean the math is easy, they can through whatever they like at me with math I can handle it, but will I have to hit the business hard books again?????

  • I'm not that good at taking test, but if you know all the formulas and how there used I think you can do pretty well, but I'm really looking into actuary cause I love doing math.

What's a good grade on the actuary test or percentile grade?

  • lol that girl is annoying...

  • thanx guys,,i really get it now...sort of. huhu..

i was juz wondering.....muz an actuarist works in insurance company only?....

  • no actuaries work in diversified areas like investments , finance, pensions , life assurance, general insurance, medical and health care, risk management and many more

  • Well, there is an increasing trend to recognize that actuarial skills can be applied to a range of applications outside the insurance industry. One notable example is the use in some US states of actuarial models to set criminal sentencing guidelines. These models attempt to predict the chance of re-offending according to rating factors which include the type of crime, age, educational background and ethnicity of the offender.

  • Actuarial Science is most likely to be the best major on any campus of any university!

  • i like the way people in my uni say "WOW "everytime i say i'm doing acturial science :))

  • i hate it. makes me want to beat them with my hp12c

  • @Rajiv375 wrong....

  • ZERO UNEMPLOYMENT IN THIS INDUSTRY?????? hahahahah. Great way to steer the american public in the wrong direction. All of my friends at NYU are fuckin unemployed and have passed 2 exams....... Good luck in getting a job!

  • What was your professor a professor of, math probably?

  • Are insurance firms still hiring actuaries given the recession?

  • Dude, actuaries are going to be hired until the human species is extinct. They are the ones that factor in risk, look at all of the raw data in the nation, and give out a probability. They are essential for insurance firms.

  • they are hiring very few workers at the moment (like, a single slot for summer internships across the board )

  • actuaries are in the greatest demand in times of recession

  • i'm sorry to hear that your professor is being a stereo-type. Probably he have never seen actuaries work in consulting firms. Their people skills and business knowledge can sometime top those MBA grads from Havard or Stanford. Your professor probably just like to enjoy the repetitive job of teaching, not the business industry.

  • you know what they say. those who can't do teach. and those who can't teach, teach gym.

  • That is not always true.

  • Nice vid. Thanks.

  • Wow. Really helpful. I want to do it too and this was really insightful. I definitely wanna be an actuary. And about the exams, well, I WILL be ready for th em.

  • A very high aptitude in Maths is required.

Exams are too difficult specially if you are doing a full time job!

  • so how do we know what the exams are like?

  • Is this actually, Dale "Whale Bottom" Hall?!?!?! Strato-matic, whiffle ball, and being at the Behrends bilco by 9:00 am every morning in the Summer?!?!?!

  • Is this job growing? could it be applied to other fields? Stockmarket could it get u into the hedgefund biz?

  • Actuarial Science rules!!

  • Nice job. It's my number 1 pick right now...

  • pretty pro...one of the best compilations on the web about the topic...definately interested now...

  • Before this I was wondering whether I should take Actuarial Science... But now, I know...
