this song was probably not on the original set list, and was done to get the sit-in drummer started out OK. No its not Howlin Wolf-level, but Keith had just passed out on horse tranqulizers and this guy Scot Halpin was picked out of the crowd to finish the show.
The Who needed to see if the guy could keep a tempo and smokestack is an easy blues riff. Bill Graham literally plucked the kid out of the crowd.
No its not a great cover, but it served a purpose. Dont hate on it.

What a rush it must have been, as an amateur drummer, to glance up -- say, at the 2:05 mark -- and see Pete Townshend on your left and Roger Daltrey on your right groovin' to the beat you were laying down.
I really didn't expect Roger to be able to sound that much like a black man from the American south! Is this the show where Mooney passed out from the horse tranquilizers?
Hell NO he did NOT "die a wealthy man" The allegation is typical of kinds of bullshit rumors & lies about this great man I have single-handedly for 15+ years- even now (despite others who SHOULD have confronted this) . Wolf "got by okay" being the best, disciplined, careful and with help from beloved wife Lillie. But HE had to DRIVE to the west coast/anywhere he could to be able to pay his band. I knew Wolf VERY WELL IN MANY WAYS. His estate LATER sued Chess Zep robbed him. Stones not. Who not.
Because of copyright laws, bands who cover songs certainly give credit, and pay royalties. The Who made yet more money for Chester Burnett , who enjoyed a lucrative career, and died a wealthy man. He was an amazing talent who caught the ear of Sam Phillips (who discovered and promoted Elvis) and later enjoyed international success. Howling Wolf was an admirable human being who learned to read and got a GED after age 40, was a rather upright gentleman. Why the outrage silly boy?
@boomchuckaboom because blacks like with most things have not been given the credit for outr contributions in all walks of life, if we are really so worthless people need to stop copying us, i mean everything about us
@kixxclub...who said Black People are worthless? I think music is from God, and all of the beautiful and diverse cultures of God's children have been inspiring each other for thousands of years. When will the "our" music "your" music thing stop? If the world were to adopt your sad premise, then there would be no great black opera singers. I really feel for people can't enjoy another perspective from an artist who was not the original artist or songwriter. Open your mind.
@kixxclub Wolf of the top 3 then-Chess based influences Wolf - Muddy - Bo (for the beat) had most influence and got less credit (never sold out) Wolf transformed blues most and influenced forms of rock to come and played rock himself. Yes, a decent band clearly honors source of covers (and pays up) Worse yet is Arthur Crudup never being inducted into the Rock Hall (Invented the form) and many influenced by him inducted (Elvis etc) and not ONE royalty for his classic blues covered by everyone
I played with John at a 'Ned Callan' promotional tour of Manchester music shops in the early seventies. We played one of my old favorites 'Smokestack Lightning' and although John said he hadn't played it before it seems he liked it !!
Wikipedia says he hadn't played drums for a year when this happened--he was only 19 at the time. If that's true this guy was incredible to pull it off. What a an amazing experience.
The definitive version is the Yardbirds. I am always puzzled by the respect the Who get as The Who Sellout is their only great CD. This song should be a stream-roller but everything is just too quiet. Before you write me with Hate go to see the Yardbirds live version on youtube.
@mhunt03 Yeah the CD is except i got tired of it . But Smokestack by The Who is too laid-back but in line with the oringinal Howlin' Wolf. But I don't like Howlin' either. I rarely like any music much before 1950. I appreciate innovation but enjoy the people who change it.
If you can play for The Who in place of Keith FUCKING Moon, and well enough that not a lot of people can tell the difference, then you're beyond a fucking legend.
@revilo314 You might be thinking of Sid Vicious, who couldn't play bass and then he learnt it after taking drugs, then took more and promptly lost it
Yeah man, he took tranquilizers that caused him to pass out, so he took a cold shower and a shot of cortisone and he he passed out again, so they asked if someone in the crowd knew how to play the drums and this kid scot halpin stepped up to the mother fuckin plate and did it!
my sister was at the Funny Bone in Bloomington Indiana when the comic on stage starting talking about when The Who had the guy from the crowd play the drums and how he was from bloomington and a table starting laughing, IT WAS HIS WIFE! she said he had died but if you ask me he probably still had the smile on his face he got on that Holy Alter of Rock n Roll. All praise to the Father, the Son, and Jimi Hendrix, Amen
Hey guys I am currently in the process of proposing a documentary about Scot Halpin's story that night. Can anyone help me out? If you know of interviews that exist or anything else that can be used as B-roll footage I would appreciate it. Come on all you WHO fanatics!
The who dabbled with blues a bit-but definitely not as much as the Stones or other groups. If anything The Who never really abandoned the spirit of Jazz and to this day retain the free spirit of Jazz when performing live. hence the free form arrangements and the tangents they head off into on many songs. Like the many different ways they have expanded My Generation over the years.
I knew someone who said they were in the audience for this. Moon fell over intoxicated and Townsend got on the mic and asked if there was a drummer in the house. I think Rolling Stone magazine gave the guy an award or something like "Best Pick-up Gig Ever".
This was an amazing experience, like the ultimate dream of any band´s fan. I don´t think I could had done it, I think I just would had frozen in Halpin´s situation. Amazing footage.
Keith Moon passed out on the drums..they took him back stage and put him on the kit and he PASSED OUT AGAIN...Pete Towshend got on the mic and asked "Are there any drummers in the house?..This kid got up out of the audience and kicked ass..
Not bad for a guy off the street. I guess he fits in somewhere between Kenney Jones and Simon Phillips on the list of best non-Keith Moon Who drummers.
I admire the Who, their explosiveness, and raw power. Although I like Zeppelin more, The Who can always kick the shit outta me. Skynyrd is a good after party band, but Zeppelin and the Who are amazing every single time of the day.

I was just reading about this famous night:
Halpin admired The Who's stamina, admitting "I only played three numbers and I was dead."

Hey guys I am currently in the process of proposing a documentary about Scot Halpin's story that night. Can anyone help me out? If you know of interviews that exist or anything else that can be used as B-roll footage I would appreciate it. Come on all you WHO fanatics!

Sounds like it would be a great doc, or even a full-length film like Detroit Rock City. And Keith could be played by Robert Downey Jr.!

The who dabbled with blues a bit-but definitely not as much as the Stones or other groups. If anything The Who never really abandoned the spirit of Jazz and to this day retain the free spirit of Jazz when performing live. hence the free form arrangements and the tangents they head off into on many songs. Like the many different ways they have expanded My Generation over the years.

this song is spoonful, not smokestack lightning.

I knew someone who said they were in the audience for this. Moon fell over intoxicated and Townsend got on the mic and asked if there was a drummer in the house. I think Rolling Stone magazine gave the guy an award or something like "Best Pick-up Gig Ever".

Daltrey does everything well, he's a demigod! Science fact: the average human has a 1 in 8 chance that Roger Daltrey is his/her actual father!

This was an amazing experience, like the ultimate dream of any band´s fan. I don´t think I could had done it, I think I just would had frozen in Halpin´s situation. Amazing footage.

At least they put more effort into making sound bearable unlike Bob Dylan. Bob was just so wrong for his rendition.

why does Roger Daltrey always march in place?
zappafan136 2 years ago
because if he marched forward he would fall off the stage?

Keith Moon passed out on the drums..they took him back stage and put him on the kit and he PASSED OUT AGAIN...Pete Towshend got on the mic and asked "Are there any drummers in the house?..This kid got up out of the audience and kicked ass..
SteveGaines 2 years ago 2
Not bad for a guy off the street. I guess he fits in somewhere between Kenney Jones and Simon Phillips on the list of best non-Keith Moon Who drummers.

Guess you never heard about the opening act on this tour .... From all accounts SKYNYRD blew the WHO away night after night!
MelvynSkyryder 2 years ago
I admire the Who, their explosiveness, and raw power. Although I like Zeppelin more, The Who can always kick the shit outta me. Skynyrd is a good after party band, but Zeppelin and the Who are amazing every single time of the day.
