  • I saw a Cicada for the first time yesterday (8-2-11) at the laundry mat. My friend and i was just finishing up with the laundry and we saw it flying around. We couldnt figure out what it was but when we heard the sound it made we freaked out. It looked like it was about to attack us. Her brother told us later on that night when she explained it to him that it was a cicada. I dont like bugs and i most def. dont like Cicada's lol they freak me out. HAHA

  • one of these were close to me i was like WHOA THATS LOUD!

  • I remember running around barefoot as a kid in Louisiana and stepping on one of those and I jumped sky high... I must have been like 5 years old. They'd leave their little shells everywhere, and we'd collect them and stick them on our shirts.

  • "Cicadas calling the children back to school..."

  • I absolutely love the sounds of cicadas. It screams summer to me!

  • I hate this sound, it disgusts me.

  • I hate them. When i was younger one flew onto my shirt and started to vrawl toward my face X(

  • I have always loved hearing them in the Summer. I have never watched one 'wiggle' before. What an amazing video. I am so glad you posted it. :)

  • Man, we never get to hear that anymore where we live! That sound has been replaced by an incredibly annoying, metronomic creaking noise that continues nonstop all day every day all summer. The kick of it is, after twelve years I still have no idea what sort of bugs they are, much less what they look like.

  • @Emper0rH0rde Possibly a Death Counter Beetle, they are ANNOYING.

  • Cool video. Hear it all the time in summer. Never knew what was making that noise. More frequent when very humid. From toronto

  • They look like mutated flys... Ahhhh.

  • cool

  • finally someone on yt with a real camera!!

  • i always thought it was a bird that made that sound

  • 3 People Wish They could fart as BA as the Cicada

  • there is one of those in my window right now but its green-ish xD

  • I make the same noise out of my ass.

  • @PETETHEMEAT42 Pull them bugs out of your ass! Are you crazy?!? LOL!!!

  • i lived in Kansas City for five years, i always heard these insects espisally around sunset. it was quite loud. i always wondered what does these insects look like...

    they are ugly! ha ha

  • i fuckin hate those things

  • in Texas we call them Cadydids

  • @lsf1953 That must be confusing since katydids are a completely different insect. On a scientific scale, a katydid is in the same general family (Tettigoniidae) as grasshoppers, crickets, and locusts, while a cicada is in an entirely different family (Cicadoidea). They are very similar though. There is a pretty good video of a katydid at youtube.com/watch?v=3DWD3bjptqs

  • I grew up to that here in Tennessee. I brought one in the bus today, lol. The radio said it'll be so loud this summer they will be at 170 decibels. I love it here. :)

  • @Christianite554 The radio is wrong. If it was 170 decibels, everyone in Tennessee would be deaf in under 5 minutes. 170 decibels is equivalent to the sound of a shotgun blast near your head. That's a split second blast, and it causes hearing problems. A huge group of cicadas can sustain their calling for hours at a time, so think of a shotgun blast near your head that lasts for hours - that's deafness in no time. The cicadas will simply not be THAT loud.

  • @jasonspell 170 decibels is as loud as an average rock concert, and that's what they compared it to.

  • @Christianite554 You need to learn how to science. I am a professional rock musician. A very loud concert will be 120 decibels at most.

  • @jasonspell Crap, it did say 120 decibels. I forgot, lol. I play at concerts, too. I have one today in Alabama. It is pretty loud, still.

  • There HERE

  • We have that kind of cicada here too. I love the sound they make, summer wouldn't be the same without them. Our dog loves to eat them too, lol.

  • those are coming to my city tomarrow.,,. i need a bat to hit those with

  • This was a senior prank at my school.

  • i heard them today when my class went outside. a BUNCH of them, we could hear them and they were kinda far away

  • I heard them this weekend making a bunch of noise. The sound lasted throughout the day and they started appearing pretty much dead around the house.

  • Dude. I've been hearing that stupid noise my whole life and I never realized that they were CICADAS. I just kinda shrugged it off for ages but...JESUS TAP-DANCING CHRIST. xD

  • one time it flew into my house, hit me in the face, and got stuck in between my face and glasses. its wing got caught in them and it freaked me out.

  • i was a kid when i first saw one.... i thought it was an oversized wasp..... and i ran scared.......then i couldn't get enough of them...... they are cool..... when you pick them up...they really get a hold of you.... it tickles actually when you hold them on your palm. and when you hear many of them together on trees.....and your at a distance..... it's can be a soothing sound...... or an annoying sound...depends on the person.. a bunch of them togethe to me sounds like a plane in the distance

  • ugly

  • It's a neekerbreeker!

  • I envy you guys! I don't have these in my country. Even though they are loud their sound is a beautiful mark of summer and heat.

  • god, I grew up with this sound ;) I had a bunch of cicadas liveing in my house when I was little :P

  • I always wondered what that sound was.......

  • I love Japan.

  • Great clip.

  • song of the south.

  • coolest farting bug i've ever seen

  • of an early death

    showing no sign

    the cicada's voice

  • that sound is music to my ears. When I hear that, I think of warm summer nights in Oklahoma, and an unexplainable calm comes over me. beautiful creatures. If you listen, there will be only one or two cicadas singing, then more will join them until the beautiful chorus climaxes and decrescendos back to just one or two voices. It is amazing to hear nature sing!

  • The soundtrack of summertime.

  • thats not a normal sounding cicada.....that one looks like its old and tired of doing it. It sounds like its farting lmao

  • wow it must have had baked beans !

  • I remember around summer of 04 in Louisville Kentucky, they were apparently going through their 17 year mating process. You couldn't walk anywhere in the older part of Louisville without stepping on one to two of them. I see them occasionally in Atlanta during the summer as well but no where near as bad.

  • My Grandmother called them heat bugs, and I always loved the sound in the summer along with the sweltering heat as well as the aromas of privet and wild honeysuckle. . . . Now that's summertime!

  • @mreunome Well, I actually hate this sound. Not because it annoys me or because I fear these insects, but rather because it validates and solidifies the fact that summer is in full bloom. And all chances of any crisp, cool air is gone. I hate summer time. It's my least favorite time of the year. I much prefer the cool, air and beautiful foliage of autumn and the gray overcast days of winter any day. So you and me are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to our favorite season. LOL

  • @exxodus29 That's because you're an autumn person as am I. I don't enjoy the Winter, unless it's snowing hard and theres blankets of snow everywhere.

  • @TheGodTier come here to canada, I guarantee you will get sick of snow in no time LOL

  • @mreunome what a beautifulass sentance :')

  • DAMN! That's one huge freakin' cicada!

  • so it farts?

  • @amritg187 CLASSIC.

  • @amritg187 LOL!

  • @amritg187 LOL

  • imagine when it shake the poop comes out

  • perfect..i have been searching for a good cicada sound..thanks!

  • those things are so annoying they wake me up every morning this summer.

  • @juggernaut0701 i find it relaxing!

  • @LastShinobi01 definetly not, all day all summer and not to mention there loud as hell and theres so many of them, thank god they all migrated now.

  • @juggernaut0701 haha well I live in montreal and there's barely any of them here. We rarely hear them here but it's fine when it's one or two I guess!

  • so they are cicidas that are making that sound every night.(during the summer) I guess they make a lot of different noises because non of the other videos had ones that sounded like this

  • thats a cool vid and i have those and those LOUDEST cicadas in my back yard everynight i find them but in the shell + i find ''dog day''cicadas in my front yard pretty cool huh?

  • @keysgirl38 where do you live? those dog-day cicadas are a constant high pitched sound that gets louder and louder right?

  • That's Tibicen chloromera. Nice vid :)

  • What type of camera are you using? It's very sharp!

  • That was the longest and loudest fart i've ever heard. Very unique.

  • I think they come from Mars originally

  • eeeww its so ugly

  • Found a "Dog Day" one this morning, in the middle of the sidewalk, picked it up and put it in the tree, didn't want it roasting on the sidewalk, didn't make any noise though, but dang when they take off are those wings LOUD.

  • That is SO cool... I hear those buggers around here every summer, and have always wondered what they look like. Excellent video!!

  • why do they just start making that sound all of the sudden

  • That's cool, I always usually hear them outside in the trees.

  • damn I can't hear it because crickets outside my window are so damn loud! -.-'

  • Gorgeous. :o) amazing demonstration. Thanks.

  • Kill it kill them all I am not a person who usually condones violence but those things when they get in swarms are so loud!

  • Watch out it's a bomb!!

  • beautiful video! i have always wondered what that piercing noise was in the trees...now i know! Thanks for posting!

  • i hear that in the morning

  • Awesome insect!

  • Tibicen chloromera- they wing flick to disrupt other male's calls

  • He is trying to intimidate you by clicking his wings lol

  • Aw... Good find! How sweet. It's beautiful!
