The camera's optical image stabilization feature really helped - especially considering how zoomed the shot was, but yes I agree - this one really deserved a full length time lapse sequence - complete with sinking below the horizon... If only I was better equipped at the time and NOT standing in line for the planetarium show! XD
Indeed - I wish I had the tripod all set up and camera mounted for a more stable shot. All I could do at the time was to grab a few zoomed, hand-held shots - but it was so spectacular I felt that even with the movement it was still worth it :-) Thanks for checking it out!
As bad as the pollution is, it's not near as bad as it was when I was a kid growing up in the area in the 60s and 70s. The population is higher, but the air is actually cleaner, thanks to emissions standards.
Having made that comment, areas in the San Joaquin Valley have among the worst air pollution in the states, and much of it comes from Los Angeles.
Can you send me some private messages about your fav choices in equipment to do high speed photography?
Sure - I'll send you a PM... The air quality in the SFV and SCV does seem a bit better than I remember in the 70s/80s. Worst I've ever seen (80s/ 90s) was along the 210 freeway mid-day; you could hardly see across the road, exhaust and chlorine smell, eyes burning. Scary! I'm surprised the San Joaquin valley would be so bad with all the agriculture there, but smog from L.A. on a SSW prevailing wind does make sense. I hear that air pollution from China contributes some too! :-/
Definitely - the clouds do help refract the light - especially the really high clouds made of ice crystals. The low sun angles such as at sunrise and sunset allow the atmosphere to filter out the higher light (blue) frequencies, leaving the lower frequency reds and oranges. ...and oddly, the air pollution common over/near large cities like this, further filter the light making for even deeper colors. Thanks for watching and commenting! =)
It's my pleasure to bring you these amazing spectacles of nature - and there are indeed many more to come! :-) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Yea, I do have a lot of channels :-) All the JCMDI ones are mine, plus two more that aren't readily apparent - HummingBirdChannel and TheNatureStation... All together I have over 2700 videos online now, and tons more on the way! :-O
It probably is, for most people... But I'm soooo darned creative, and I even thought about stopping.... once... but I think I would need something like "videomakers anonymous" to be successful! XD
I could imagine all sorts of cool things to do if they still allowed animated icons and backgrounds. I had made and uploaded my animations long before they stopped allowing it, and was careful not to change anything so they would last as long as possible. However, when they forced us all to the new page layouts, all the old stuff went away so I had to re-upload the non-animated versions :-( Note there are still some lingering animated icons out there :-]
Another day ends. Really nicely!!! ...Jimmy...

beautiful video, would love to see the footage of it actually sinking below the horizon. and for handheld, that was very steady!

Love the colouration, that's the real wow factor right there, possibly though could do with stabilising it a touch.

You had that page with an animated gif file butterfly as BG huh ?
Dang, I was not allowed to do that in Holland and it made me very jealous :-(
