  • I'm glad to see steam back!

  • Is there anytime the 4501 is scheduled to be back in 2012? Someone let me know ASAP. I would love to go see her soon.

  • Can't wait till 4501's back. Hopefully 611 in the future....But well....We'll have to wait and see.:)

  • Man, I really hope that Nickel Plate 624 will join in these festivities, but it needs a restoration before that can happen. A group called NWIRPS has formed with the purpose of restoring the 2-8-2.

  • @dragonpullman23 they are only cosemeticly restoring 624.

  • Great to see 630 back.

  • @Chase1609 Yeah!

  • UP NEXT.... norfolk southern announces that it has replaced this band with a ONE MAN REMOTE CONTROL DRUM MACHINE... after years of faithfull service THE LAWMEN have been rolled to a 24 HOUR A DAY ... 7 DAY A WEEK ... ON CALL EXTRA-BOARD. get your rest fella's ....we may...or may not... need you in 10 hours.

  • Awesome video! Even better than "Raise "Em Up".

Hats off to the band and the video team.

    Danny Harmon

    Tampa

  • Very catchy song.

  • @maxm2317 -written by Briz who also wrote Raise em up for the Lawmen....

  • I still remember how to throttle jerk and how to use the old banjo (coal shovel) these great old locomotives. I sure miss the old Steamers.

  • Climbing onto the engine without gloves, no safety high visibility vest, and no safety glasses. Will the encore be: "THE NS LAWMEN GET PUT INTO THE START PROGRAM!"

  • why don't they have to wear high visibility vests but I do?

  • @senorjavier22 - It's all just for the video - the engine was static the entire time...

  • @trainmaster844 My guess is that they used fog machines to simulate the smoke and steam eminating from the stack and underneath the engine. Lookin' forward to seein' the program reach Pennsylvania someday. THREE CHEERS FOR NORFOLK SOUTHERN! URA! URA! URA!

  • @maxm2317 She was actually live when they did that. They just lip sang and added in a recording.

  • @Weiberts Oh, thanks for the update.

  • @trainmaster844 obviously, I'm just making a joke about the dumb vests we are forced to wear

  • NS Lawmen are a talented bunch. This video shows, with the return of the steam program the lean towards Southern heritage and to hell with the N&W. Why wouldnt they have brought back the 611 or 1218? Ive been with the company for over 20 years and in late 1991 or so (10 yrs post merger) a bulletin posted "We are no longer two separate entities. No SOU...no N&W. We are Norfolk Southern." If thats so then why are the F units in SOU colors and no N&W steam in play?

  • @SurfTrip00 - I think the "lean towards Southern" is due to the partnership with TVRM. Two out of the three engines they're using in this program are of Southern heritage (630 and 4501). I believe if the program goes well, it's a possibility 611 could be brought out again in the future.

  • @trainmaster844 ....Im speaking of operations as a whole as well, not just the steam program. Keep in mind the bulletin I mentioned. Sorry if it was a little unclear. GP59 #4610.....F units for corporate specials....the choice to cooperate in the revamping of SOU steam over N&W and operations in general tend to lean one way. How about a locomotive or two that represents the other half of that 1982 merger? Say ...something painted in a nice 1960's dark blue?

  • @SurfTrip00 - I think I understand where you're coming from. However, aren't the passenger cars used on the OCS's painted N&W Tuscan Red? There are a few hints to the N&W, of course, but I can understand your point of view.

  • Wow. Could 2011 get any better?!

  • Very nice!

  • That's awesome!

  • I'm sinin' along, out-loud in my house with the windows open! The nebighors are lookin' at me like im a fool ,but I don't care. GOOD JOB BOYS! LETS GET PUMPED FOR MAINLINE STEAM YALL!!!!

  • @Chase1609 what do you mean 6??? they have 1, and when 4501 is operable, 2, even thought it would be nice to see atleast 611 pounding the rails again, i doubt it

  • My Great Grandaddy, Earl C. Bruce, was the fireman on several excursions on Southern 630, Southern 4501, T&P 610, and that Berkshire with Bill Purdie. Very cool to see steam coming back to my generation on Norfolk Southern. Thanks NS!

  • Maybe when PRR K4 1361 gets fired up it'll be incorporated into the program too. Good to see at least one rail corp agknowledging their heritage!

And yes, the 1361 will be fired up again. The museum has a plan to get her back in action, all they have to do is get it approved by the board.

  • That's my Daddy playing accordian!!

  • @MissStarkidRichter Awesome!

  • Some people need to understand you gotta start the program somewhere.. can't just jump straight into 4 steam locos on long distance excursions! Time will tell.

  • @TNtrainboy15 - Exactly, my friend! Can't wait to see what comes out of this new program :)

  • Great song; great video; Great Railroad, GREAT CEO! Thank you!

  • NS as a railfan I want to say thank you. As much as I love main line steam I would rather you do a couple of steam trips a year and keep the program going than do too much too quikcly. I understand you are a business, and that has to take priority. But take advantage of this and use it for PR and marketing purposes. Do what the Union Pacific does and entertain shippers and railroad customers. But I would like to say keep it up, remember your history as you move forward into the 21st century.

  • Nice video! A fitting "theme song" for the program! Is the program only focused on the Southern portion of the NS System or will system-wide tours be a possibility?

Either way, great to see the company reinstating the program with two of the engines from the original program from the '60s!

    KEEP 'EM ROLLIN'!

    Chris K. (TM844)

  • Has someone told these guys THIS ISN T THE MIGHTY 611?????

  • @generationll - You do realize that 630 and 4501 (two of the engines being utilized for the new NS Program) were part of the ORIGINAL Southern Steam Program in the 1960's, right?

I think NS is trying to start out small with 630, 610 and 4501 and besides, the partnership with TVRM is a big plus - we might see 611 in the future - it's not out of the cards, my friend! :)

For now, I think that these engines will provide tons of enjoyment for all who see them :)

  • @trainmaster844 Wick Moorman hinted to the possibility of taking 1401 out of the Smithsonian.

  • @Weiberts - Is there any evidence of him mentioning this, exactly?

  • @trainmaster844 I was talking to a TVRM employee and he talked to Wick about the possibility of 1401 being removed from the Smithsonian. Wick said that since there is a big glass wall behind her and she is in almost perfect shape, it is highly likely.

  • @Weiberts LMAO. That engine isn't EVER leaving the Smithsonian. No way in hell is it going anywhere. That building was partially built around that engine after it arrived.

  • @Weiberts There is NO WAY the 1401 will be taken out of The Smithsonian. Somebody is pulling your leg.

  • Now this is an AWESOME video! Steam all the way! Nice that NS is showing pride in its history and heritage.

  • NS please read this comment:

Have 630 run ALL over the system. Huh?

  • Get 611 going again and dont just let all those people down south enjoy the fun! Send some stuff up to PA!!!

  • Hey NS, Please call the Ft Wayne boys and let them cut 765 loose to own the NKP again.

  • @Chase1609 And possibly Reading 2101

  • @atsf3415dbr they'd better! If not I'll do it. lol.

  • @atsf3415dbr - 2101 was damaged by the roundhouse fire in Russell, KY in 1977 - she might not run again, seeing how the B&O Museum is near CSX property...

  • Can't wait! Had fun working on the old girl this summer and it'll finally pay off!
