Great tribute to a lovely man, whomever put this together thank you. I had the privilege of seeing and meeting him some 23 years ago, I am definitely a brass lover thanks to his music, and sadly the great players of his genre are all but gone. RIP Mr. Ferguson.
I remember hearing the announcement on KFI radio here in So Cal the day he died--know EXACTLY where I was. What a shock to me, because I never thought my hero would ever die. To say he was legendary is only a tenth of what one could say about this man. I had the great honor of hosting him at my high school (Pasadena High School) back in 1983, and got to meet him and talk to him. What a great day. And what a great man. Miss you Boss!! Fanaddict for Ferguson Forever!!
One thing that Maynard should be remembered for is being a great band leader. Not only was he a great player, but he gave lots of younger guys their break. I saw Maynard at least a dozen times, and I was blown away every time. Nobody out there today riding the bus to inspire all the kids. We miss you MF.
Well said, I am 15 and have been playing his music nonstop since i first heard him......I just wish i would have been one of the lucky ones to have seen him in person. I would give anything to meet him and learn from him. Rest in peace Maynard. You are missed.
I love Maynard Ferguson! He hung out and tripped with Timothy Leary. I saw him live a few times and he and his backing band was always awesome. I love how he features young up and coming musicians.
Correct. And for that I'm glad. He is why I still play the trumpet and have taught music for 20 years. I still remember hearing my first Maynard recording. Gospel John.
thanks for posting this compilation! MF was a nice man I was a fan from childhood listening to the albums my late Father had and played some tenor sax and trumpet before singing...
I'm not a musician, but I appreciate great musicianship. Will anyone ever be able to match Maynard's skill & most importantly of all, his heart? I doubt it. Thanks for this great tribute.
I saw him 4 times from HS thru college late 70's then again about 2000. The first time in '75 I saw steam come out his bell playing Don't let the sun go down. Bravado that made the band geeks proud. I would have loved to played a chart with him. Our HS Jazz band was just dumb enough to think we could play some of those MF Horn Charts and we did some pretty OK. GIve it One has got to be the one I'd pick over any other Maynard tune, at least from that era. We did Gospel John OK and Chameleon too!
I saw him in Cleveland two times. He was noted for bringing in new talent. When I saw him the first time, his drummer was Peter Erskine just coming up.
Just a beautiful tribute-visually and musically ! Maynard was most certainly a man of the people and beloved for his musicianship and graciousness as can be seen in these photos. Perhaps those at the Blue Note were from his last gig there ?
Just sterling! He really did go out of his way to speak to bunches of pimply high schoolers and encourage them. Beautiful. I guess now he really HAS left the stratosphere. Thanks SO much!
Bravo! So many of us have lost our musical beacon; thanks for such a loving tribute.
I first heard "Danny Boy" in 1961 on "The New Sounds of Maynard Ferguson." His chops were so incredibly big then; yet that tune, which wasn't that big a hit during his lifetime, seems so beautifully to capture his contribution to so many of us. He was the consummate torch trumpet player.
What gets me is the time he spent sharing his love of jazz with high schoolers through out his career. I went to a show in the late 70's and took my son to a high school event with Maynard in 2004. What a gem.
This is the best of all the tribute pic/music vid's I've seen. I am a trumpet player from Detroit and am going to be doing a Maynard tribute concert and I want to have this playing on a huge screen while people come in before the concert... does anyone know where I can download this??
The great thing about Maynard was that he was not only an unbelieveable trumpet player, he was a great human being. He loved jazz, loved playing the trumpet, and never forgot about the people that came to hear him play, whether it was a young kid or elderly man or woman. He survived through all the changes in music in the 2nd half of the 20th century just by doing what he loved to do and treating everyone with respect. There will never be another like him.
My favorite trumpet play period. He could make any song fun and exciting. I only say him in person once, but it was a great show. His songs live on in my iPod.
I was fortunate to see Maynard live in Detroit at the top of the Ponchatrane (sp) Hotel many years ago. He was a huge influence on all of the musicans I knew and I know that they, along with myself, are deeply saddned by his passing. Thank you Maynard for inspiring us all. RIP
Nice tribute. I am one of the thousands of trumpet players who Maynard left an indelible impression upon. I was fortunate to see him several times. Los Angeles (Hollywood Bowl), Rochester, NY, and high above Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes at a summer outdoor concert come to mind. I was always awed and dumbfounded by the man's longevity playing some of the most demanding music imaginable.
...and yes, "Danny Boy" is special. The man's contributions will endure.
Wow, what a tribute. I saw Maynard in concert 6 times from late 70's - early 80's, even saw him in 1990 in Marion Il. He was and still is a hugh influence on my life. I can't believe he's gone. I'll miss him but I'll never forget him, never stop listening to him, never stop attempting to play along. Bye Maynard, thank you so very much. :(
As with others, I first learned about Maynard in the 7th grade when my band director took me to see his concert (still can picture the drummers with lit drumsticks doing Birdland). Prior, I never knew who he was, nor what an influence he'd have on my life. I guess it's time to retire the tour jacket I got from the old fan club - don't want it damaged.
I agree, I'm one of thousands of trumpet players who spent their hs and college years modeling themselves after MF. He knew he influenced young musicians but I'm sure he did not know the extent.
To a stranger I wish was friend. Maynard a true leader. He knew his forte and spent his whole life makings our better with it! My first idol if you can read this or hear my thoughts may you rest high above the clouds in comfort and wealth. I'm happy to see this tribute video, thanks to whoever took the time to make it!)
Thank you so much for compiling these images and sound clips. I only heard MF live twice, at Ronnie Scott's in London, but I feel blessed in that, as many of his fans missed out on that wonderful experience. Thank you Maynard for the inspiration, the excitement, the fun and above all, the music. RIP
I share my comments here too. A man's life can often become a legacy for those influenced by him. I'm sad on the one hand, but glad on the other since I sense God is not through with him yet. RIP Maynard.
Here I am still playing and listening. Maynard was not my dad, but I do consider him to be a musical parent, sort of a Guru really. I spent a lot of time with him in one form or another. Maybe it is silly to be sad over the passing of someone you really never said a word to, but he was a huge influnce on me.
Goodbye Maynard. You will be missed but you are still in my heart.
whats the name of this song?!?!?!?!?!?
