I think Mr. curtiis80 has got the right point and perspective in this. There is no lift anymore, so the thing falls down on the ground. It is a simple lift vs. speed vs. Earth pull equation
I'm amazed that this is getting by with absolutely no mention of the KC-135 Tanker that crashed on base just a few short years before. The same low level aerobatic mentality was running wild with the blessings of the wing and base commanders. The 135 crashed on base within 200 yards of an atonement area, Commissary to be exact loaded with shoppers. Besides the on board crew, one person, ironically, a crew member grounded for illness was parked at the crash site watching when it ocurred
The description isn't really fair - the responsible "flight crew" was pilot Bud Holland who had been allowed to continue playing at being a macho asshole by the brass despite his showboating and insane belief in the Stratofortress's ability to defy Mother Physics. One of the guys killed (and the one who bailed out last minute) was a Lt who volunteered to fly with him here only because he refused to let any of his men do so.
@somnus71 No. He was banking to much at too low speed, yes. But as he did so, his wingtips would have stalled leaving him with no aileron control. Hence the aircraft continues to creep up towards a 90 degree bank angle, and the pilot is left unable to correct the motion. The aircraft falls to the ground as a rock, as no vertical lift component exist anymore. No pilot does a 90 degree bank at low speed. This one pushed the limit too far, and ended up 90 degrees unwillingly.
theres actually a ten minute video of this on youtube somewhere that has the whole, or a good portion anyways, flight video recorded. It's very scary.
If your ever at a fair, see how many candy apples you can stick to your head and neck at one time. And then walk around in a confused manner and say repeatedly, "Penny for your thoughts? Penny for your thoughts?" You might be surprised how many people find it highly amusing. But don't use caramel apples. I hate those damn things!
@40390576 It was in the news that I had heard about it being suicide. It's still a shame though that he had to be such a dumb pilot and try to fly a plane that I'm sure he knew was not capable of making a 90 degree banked turn so low to the ground.
I remember hearing alot about this crash when it happened and it turned out that the pilot slammed into the ground on purpose to commit suicide, its a shame that he had to take the rest of the aircrew with him though.
Is this the guy who put his plane into a death spiral over his daughter's baseball game? The same guy who climbed at such an angle that the fuel was coming out of the wing tanks and loosened some rivets. He wanted to be the first 52 pilot to execute a roll. He was known as a 'hot stick.'
I think he tried to turn it like a B-2 but the B-2 doesn't have the engines and the cockpit sticking out of the front of the wing.. making it nose heavy instead of balanced
@AntDX316 a B-2 cannot be pulled out to quickly, and if a pilot were to stall, the results would be catastrophic. The way the plane was designed would send it into violent pitch oscillations, causing the wings to rip clean off. A pilot first testing it was warned not to stall it. He decided not to listen and did so anyway. The plane was found (I believe) a couple miles before the runway. (he was not landing, this is just where he was performing tests). Significant stress was found at the w
@MultiCessnaPilot -ing roots. the ends of the wings were torn off at similar points. Later a comment was found in his journal stating that he was planning to try it. (he wrote it before the flight) He was killed in the crash.
@Imakeplanesboom Right, but what I don't understand is why people feel they need to do dangerous maneuvers in bombers and commercial jetliners at airshows. Some planes are made for hard maneuvers, some are not. What's awesome about big planes is just that, their size. Fly it overhead slowly at a safe altitude, do a couple of nice safe turns and throttle up to shake everyone up and give them an appreciation of the plane for what it is. Then have fighters and stunt planes provide the aerobatics.
My hard earned tax dollars up in smoke. I am not a pilot but i do know that plane was never designed to fly in that manner looks like showboating, and lives lost makes no damn since.
@Imakeplanesboom He was a failed fighter pilot who already had prior incidents in the B-52, he should not have been flying that aircraft. Look up the facts about this incident.
Don't be a pussy. I'm a man, I'm a man, and I'll prove it... by banking my 8-engine strategic bomber so there's no lift at very low altitude plus it's stalled. Oh, where did the controls go, and what's the sulfur smell and the guy with the pitchfork?
There are many things she can do, but fly with her wings vertical to the gound?, just past her abilities. A pilot who took it too far..for his crew and his ship. RIP
Saw this clip before. The co-pilot actually attempted an eject, but landed in the ball of fire. The pilot was a dangerous guy, and it was said hes going to get someone killed. He was waved off the runway on the first pass and when circling he tried to avoid flying over an ammo bunker, doing so can get a pilot grounded. Which is the reason behind the steep turn. RIP fellas
@policevancan I dont think that can be right - if you watch the full video of this accident, he pulls hard dangerous turns for around 10 minutes before crashing. It clearly wasnt a single hard turn to avoid sometting, he does numerous (10 or more) dangerous banks, and is clearly 'showing off'.
@Xiolablu3 True, I don't doubt he was showing off. I was just going off a documentary I saw about 4 years back on this very crash, and that's what they claimed
@AntDX316 Most likely not because he would have had more room to maneuver.
@crescentfallen99 True. I imagine the bunker would be huge being as its a B-52 base, (1000lbs bombs and what not) and if it were to be destroyed, we're talking the whole base being a smoking crater on the map.
@AntDX316 Of course.... which is the reason he couldn't fly over it. If you already knew that why did you ask that in your original comment. Your confusing me my man.
@policevancan he should have not did such a steep of a turn at a low alt.. but I think he was at max speed when he pulled that turn.. I've done that same manuver in FSX with the 747 and it turned out the same result.. but that was before I saw this video
@policevancan That is absolutely not what happened. He was practicing for an airshow act. The plane was supposed to do a steep turn, but by the time he was past 90°, there was really no chance for recovery. An Airplane with that slow roll rate would not have a chance to get it back to the point where the elevator's maximum deflection would be able to pull it out of a dive. Please research before posting. Thanks you. RIP to all on board.
Not surprising when you consider plains are naturally flat objects and usually consist of millions of tons of dirt and rock which require much larger control surfaces than the pilot had at his disposal.
Steep turn gone too far with not enough power and lost lift and went down.....It's only natural and too close to the ground to begin with. What a waste....
my dads brother meet the the guy flying the plane he was an asshole hot shot at 0:02 he should have pulled out of the turn but he wanted to be a hot shot and waited to long this is what happens when u try to act cool and act like ur tiz the shit when ur not
@mobiussquadron No soup for you. User Policevancam is more correct. . The pilot was an ignorant hot-shot that routinely broke flight safety rules. Many professionals refused to fly with him. The subsequent investigation concluded that the chain of events leading to the crash was primarily attributable to three factors: Holland's personality and behavior, USAF leaders' delayed reactions to earlier incidents involving Holland, and the sequence of events during the aircraft's final flight.
To me it looked like at the 5 second mark there was fire or some shiny object/spark on the right wing and then it made a sharp town downwards. I don't know a thing about planes but was bored and I was watching plane crashes in the Hudson River and I saw this one. I don't think this pilot knew what was coming and with all the soundwaves or magnetic fields nowadays, who knows. May they rest in peace and may the truth be found out, unless it already has happened.
I feel bad for 4 of the 5 men on board. I was in a class about this crash. The pilot was known to be a jackass and always tried pushing his 52 beyond the limits. His playing stunts with that thing got him and his crewmen cremated. You NEVER turn an aircraft with a wingspan like that at at severe angles, much less any plane that flys under 600 MPH. People stall and die all the time from trying damn stunts like this.
@USMCnBNSFdude Absolutely correct. The pilot was "Bud" Holland and was known to have violated established aircraft operating limitations; once while showing off over his daughter's softball game. His superiors failed to correct his reckless behavior and it cost an innocent crew their lives. A tragically avoidable loss.
@USMCnBNSFdude may I remind you that there are MANY planes that fly under 600 MPH capable of a turn like that. Cessna Aerobat for starters. All the way up to a Pitts or an Extra
If you ask yourself if you wondered if they survived, you must be some kind of stupid. There is very very very very little chance they survived... If they did not, may they Rest In Peace.
The pilot was already in trouble when he did a steep bank to go downwind...which is a few seconds before the start of this video...the plane was in an imminent stall and had dropped toward the ground, but momentarily recovered...He should have just rolled the wings level, applied power and called it a day at that point when it first started to drop instead of trying to complete the maneuver and enter a second stall from which there was no margin for recovery...
That B-52 was flown against operational procedures at Fairchild AFB Washington on 24 June 1994. It crashed just short of a weapons storage area in which i had worked in in 1981. Very sad to see 4 people perish cause of the pilot's carelessness. I'm sure this video is shown in all training Air Force wide. My late condolences to the families.
I don't think it was the "crew" that was so much in error as it was the pilot. The only error the crew made was getting on the aircraft with this guy who had a well established reputation for making dangerous manuvers while at the controls of the aircraft.
"Holland was the designated command pilot for the flight, with McGeehan as the copilot and Wolff designated as a safety observer.
The flight was also Wolff's "fini flight"—a common tradition in which a retiring USAF aircrew member is met shortly after landing on his or her final flight at the airfield by relatives, friends and coworkers, and doused with water."
It is sad to think that all his family was in attendance. Tragic
@thelleht That would be the difference between first and second-degree murder. Holland committed three counts of second-degree murder, as much as you believe it was manslaughter his reckless abandon makes him a murderer.
I can guarantee you that if he had flown like this just ONCE in the 379th BW @ Wurtsmith AFB in 1971-1972, Colonel Burkhart (later Maj. General) would have that pilot inventorying plumbing supplies at Thule AFB for the rest of his career, AFTER doing KP in the enlisted mess hall for about two years AFTER getting out of jail..
He would have been grounded so fast by Colonel Burkhart he would have wished he had never learned to fly!
@USMANchampNO1 Yes, I was at Wurtsmith in 1971-1972. Col Burkhart was the ultimate Wing Commander; respected, but tough. It did not matter what kind of weather was going on, those 52s flew in the worst of it, and Wurtsmith had a lot of snow! I respected the heck out of those guys!
Thank you! I was in Wing HQ; never did any flying, however. Was Teletype/Crypto maintenance. And yes, I met Col. Burkhart; He flew P51s during WWII. I had a lot of respect for that man.
Bud Holland you are the worst pilot who ever lived you effectively committed three murders and a suicide with your countless acts of sheer stupidity. Burn in hell
- so I've heard that there is a new weapon out there that is made of nothing but concrete and thermoshield and is shot from a satalite and the shear kinetic energy of the massive object is like the blast of 40 hiroshima bombs without the fall out?
And just to confirm, there was nothing wrong with the B-52. Lt. Col. Holland just blatantly ignored every basic safety rule and minimum performance standard for the B-52, put it through a maneuver even a basic pilot would know was impossible at that speed and altitude, and flew the aircraft into the ground.
It's a shame he took three fine Air Force officers with him.
An excerpt from a past flight with Lt. Colonel Holland:
"...the minimum aircraft altitude permitted for that area was 500 feet. Holland's aircraft cleared the ridgeline by only 3 feet. The co-pilot on Holland's aircraft testified that he grabbed the controls to prevent Holland from flying the aircraft into the ridge while the aircraft's other two aircrew members repeatedly screamed at Holland, "Climb! Climb!" Holland responded by laughing and calling one of the crew members "a pussy"."
The pilot's name was Bud Holland and he had a history of hot-dogging and ignoring safety rules. But he was a well-connected senior pilot with a lot of friends and his commanders refused to discipline him. See above.
The person who was driving that plane thought he could do a loop'd'loop on to the runway but failed. R.I.P to all of those good people that had a total DUMBASS drive their plane!
holy thaT WAS AT A 90 degree angle!!U CANT PULL UP ON THAT!AND UR IN A BOMBER WITH NO PARACHUTES ITS OVER AND U WENT HEAD FIRST INTO THE GROUND U GOT OWCCH!
@mynith nukes don't ignite like a normal bomb...they need a complex ignition system to explode...if they were carrying nukes it would've been like a little chernobyl

The subsequent investigation concluded that the chain of events leading to the crash was primarily attributable to three factors: Holland's personality and behavior, USAF leaders' delayed reactions to earlier incidents involving Holland, and the sequence of events during the aircraft's final flight.

looks like power lines hit by wing. Was already too late from the looks of it
OneM900 9 months ago

USMCnBNSFdude 11 months ago
@USMCnBNSFdude Absolutely correct. The pilot was "Bud" Holland and was known to have violated established aircraft operating limitations; once while showing off over his daughter's softball game. His superiors failed to correct his reckless behavior and it cost an innocent crew their lives. A tragically avoidable loss.
doscazadores 9 months ago
@USMCnBNSFdude may I remind you that there are MANY planes that fly under 600 MPH capable of a turn like that. Cessna Aerobat for starters. All the way up to a Pitts or an Extra

The pilot was already in trouble when he did a steep bank to go downwind...which is a few seconds before the start of this video...the plane was in an imminent stall and had dropped toward the ground, but momentarily recovered...He should have just rolled the wings level, applied power and called it a day at that point when it first started to drop instead of trying to complete the maneuver and enter a second stall from which there was no margin for recovery...
nowhereman841 1 year ago
Hmmm not much lift when the wings are 90 degrees to the ground. Only having a few hundred feet to recover isn't good either.

How many coke cans did it take to make that B-52? What a waste. OH WELL, they can use the scrap metal to make more coke cans again.

My late condolences to the families.
rubbing2000 1 year ago
I don't think it was the "crew" that was so much in error as it was the pilot. The only error the crew made was getting on the aircraft with this guy who had a well established reputation for making dangerous manuvers while at the controls of the aircraft.

D00D why would you make up a story like that?
This is from a crash at Fairchild AFB, they were practicing for an airshow, 4 people were on that plane.
No B-52 has ever been fitted to be flown by remote control and then crashed at an airbase, that's the most fuckass stoopit claim I've ever heard.
TheJomogogo 1 year ago
"Holland was the designated command pilot for the flight, with McGeehan as the copilot and Wolff designated as a safety observer.
The flight was also Wolff's "fini flight"—a common tradition in which a retiring USAF aircrew member is met shortly after landing on his or her final flight at the airfield by relatives, friends and coworkers, and doused with water."
It is sad to think that all his family was in attendance. Tragic
Orangebike666 1 year ago
@thelleht That would be the difference between first and second-degree murder. Holland committed three counts of second-degree murder, as much as you believe it was manslaughter his reckless abandon makes him a murderer.
Railer505 1 year ago
@Railer505
JIM30747 1 year ago
@JIM30747 That makes me think that you were there at that base.
I just checked your channel and i see you are sixty four years young man.
Which means back in 1972 you might have been there at that base and met that colonel yourself .
Am i right?
GOD bless you dude.
USMANchampNO1 1 year ago
@USMANchampNO1 Yes, I was at Wurtsmith in 1971-1972. Col Burkhart was the ultimate Wing Commander; respected, but tough. It did not matter what kind of weather was going on, those 52s flew in the worst of it, and Wurtsmith had a lot of snow! I respected the heck out of those guys!
JIM30747 1 year ago
@USMANchampNO1
Thank you! I was in Wing HQ; never did any flying, however. Was Teletype/Crypto maintenance. And yes, I met Col. Burkhart; He flew P51s during WWII. I had a lot of respect for that man.

Bullzeye95 1 year ago
An excerpt from a past flight with Lt. Colonel Holland:
"...the minimum aircraft altitude permitted for that area was 500 feet. Holland's aircraft cleared the ridgeline by only 3 feet. The co-pilot on Holland's aircraft testified that he grabbed the controls to prevent Holland from flying the aircraft into the ridge while the aircraft's other two aircrew members repeatedly screamed at Holland, "Climb! Climb!" Holland responded by laughing and calling one of the crew members "a pussy"."
Bullzeye95 1 year ago
The pilot's name was Bud Holland and he had a history of hot-dogging and ignoring safety rules. But he was a well-connected senior pilot with a lot of friends and his commanders refused to discipline him. See above.
