Indeed, the original song is derived from, "("Дорогой длинною", ) popularly turned into "Those Were the Days.."
Howvever, the collaboration between the 'iconoclastic' Leningrad Cowboys,' and the stolid Red Army orchestra is not only dynamic but beautiful!! I wish that I could see them in person. :)
sure maybe they have spent all their adult lives perfecting traditional Russian music and preserving it but really all along they just wanted to mock it and themselves, they really just want to be clowns in uniform and rock and roll punks
@JerryKitich Absolutely agree with this opinion. Fabulous Russian song but such a disgraceful behaviour on stage... A great shame. I am surprised the Red Army Choir agreed to perform with them.
This is amazing its always played frequently during the winter with my uncle he is really awesome at it. perfectly free for my ps3 from here; 115 games . com there are hundreds and the best part is they are all totally free by the way 1:34 to 2:44 was superb
Their days were not as the same as ours 20+ years ago. We dream to live back in those days, but I don't think Russian would. The song was famous in ALL over the world.
In german there is a song that has the same music, called "Superjeilezick". It's performed by a german (carneval)-band. It's sung in the accent "kölsch", a accent spoken in the city of cologne.
Yes and no. The lyrics are by Gene Raskin, an American. But they're based on a Russian song called "Дорогой длинною" ("Dorogoi dlinnoyu", or "Endless Road"), which has the same tune. My Russian isn't good enough to tell you whether the verses in Russian are a translation of the Raskin back to Russian, or the original lyrics.
Naw. That was the Beatles. They did, however, produce Mary Hopkin's version, so, I suppose, either way, The Beatles helped tear down the Iron Curtain. Even Putin and other Russian people said so when McCartney played Red Square.

If there's one thing I've learned in 55 years, it's that all over the world people are people. It's the politicians that bugger things up

@TheQuesoviejo Yep, You are watching the Russian Red Army Choir with a Finnish band sining songs in english live on stage.
Its politics that mess it all up, people are people.

a total travesty, the Red Army chorus is humiliated to appear here, they are the bastion of Russian folk music, not western rock clowning
JerryKitich 2 years ago
I disagree. Maybe, just maybe the Red Army guys wanted to goof off and have a bit of fun, taking part in this project.

nope, they aren't. Both songs are about longing and parting, though. So the archetype is similiar, though words are not.
The Russian original lyrics can be found eg. here

So, American used Russian tune on the mid of the Cold War, how impressive. Maybe, that's why the Cold War ended.
