Scientology doesn't lure in as many crazy people as one might think. The lure of Scientology is the social aspect. Friends lure in friends, lovers lure in lovers, and when one joins, everyone is excited to have you. It's not that there's something wrong with your judgment. It's the seduction of being part of something and fitting in with a community. Having a whole group of people who believe what you believe.
Does a criminal organization infiltrating the government in an attempt to control it impact you? In the immortal words of L Ron Hubbard: "Somebody some day will say 'this is illegal.' By then be sure the orgs [Scientology organizations] say what is legal or not." - L. Ron Hubbard, HCO Policy Letter, 4 January 1966, "LRH Relationship to Orgs"

L. Ron Hubbard didn't complete college.
He has no formal training in neurology, psychology, religion, theology.
His success in the Navy is in high dispute, based on dox provided by his COs.
He spent much of his life on the run from various authorities.
The organization he founded has been accused of crimes all over the globe.
