this bear is trying to not go out of its mind being cooped up in such a small space - relative to the huge expanses of its natural place...but, with the melting ice caps, maybe just as well for this couple they are in a marine zoo where they get fed without having to rely on swiftly melting ice...unfortunately caused mainly by the actions we take to meet our desire for comfort and novelty

Most zos nowadays work hard to enrich the environment and to make the enclosures of a decent size. Its not like when I was a kid (early 60's) with the prison cell cages.

I've got to agree with him on a certain moral ground. This bear is not playing. He's bored to death and passing his time by going back and forth. Polar bears are known for their massive territorial range and distance traveled everyday. Don't get me wrong. The enclosure is beautifully designed to recreate a habitat and keep them busy. I'm sure they will live very fruitful lives and benefit their species but it's sad watching them with nothing to do.

Yeah... they are pretty impressive animals... I mean... it's cool to help preserve them and all that... but they need room to breathe... However, the United States has the ability, and the resources to invent technology that reduces pollution, and yet we don't. Every other devolped nation has managed to reduce their carbon emmissions, and yet we haven't. We're worse than India and China in my opinion because we have the ability to change and yet we don't.

When I was young (a long time ago :-) my local zoo had some polar bears in an enclosure of concrete painted to look like ice. Dimensions maybe the size of an average house. Even at the age of ten or so, I noted that their behaviour was repetitive, always diving into the water at the same point, swimming through a predictable path, and emerging at the same point. Seals did the same, also lions. I concluded they they were totally bored, later that they were mentally ill. Convince me otherwise.
