Sega should take a cue from Capcom. Rather than give Sonic terrible design concepts (playing as anyone other than Sonic, transformations and fetch quests that slow down gameplay, walking around towns talking to people), take what made the original games as great as the were and design around it, which is speed, platforming, special stages for emeralds, and original level design. Look at Megaman Powered Up, Ultimate Ghost n Goblins, and Street Fighter IV. All 3D with 2D gameplay.

I got about halfway through Unleashed, but I couldn't stand the night stages. Nothing but a watered down, broken God of War in my opinion. Is there any wonder why the Sonic Advance series and Sonic Rush are met with praise? Because they keep Sonic in his element. I wouldn't mind 3D boss fights, or an occasional break from side scrolling, but for the most part, keep Sonic running and jumping from side to side, and focus on level design and refinement.
