  • This is a Mandola. Is it the same thing as an Octave Mandolin? Or is it different? I am trying to find a certain instrument, it is some kind of Italian mandolin, but I do not know what it is. It sounds similar to this instrument, or a balalaika. It has very good projection and the high notes are very bright. The sound has a lot more volume and is beautiful, and is fuller and louder than your typical bowl back mandolin. This instrument might be it. Is it the same as an octave mandolin?

  • As someone who has his own Godfather theme up here, I have to say that yours is truly amazing. An amazing instrument, as well. A "mandola," it is? If I played one of those (I barley play mandolin, really), I'd be snagging that from you. :) Bravo!

  • absolutely beautiful! Wow!

  • Beautiful music, beautifully performed. Isn't the instrument a octave mandolin and not a mandola? I'm a mandocellist and yours sounds like it's in the same range. Your playing is superb regardless.

  • You're right, operaverdi. Tim commented a few months ago that this is an octave mandolin that he tuned to a mandola's pitch. You should still be able to read his comment a couple of pages back.

  • GOD BLESS YOU DUDE !!!!!

  • amazing

  • breathtaking...truly an amazing and heartwarming sight and honor to hear you play....i am not worthy...

  • Very cool.

  • wow mind blowingly WOW

  • oh my gosh that was amazing!! you play beautifully!!

  • Tnx you from an italian guy man. Realy tnx u

  • Lovely playing. It sounds better than the mando in the actual film.

  • that looks pretty big for a mandolin, what kind is that? i play a rouge, and its like half the size. Do you reccomend this, cause it looks like its fun to play

  • Hi, This is an "octave" mandolin, with a fingerboard similar in length to a guitar, so it is good for playing chords high up the neck. The octave mandolin is normally tuned 1 octave below your mandolin, but I tuned it higher up to the mandola tuning: CGDA . Try it sometime.

  • kool, how much does this cost? im sure this lis like in the 1000s, but im just curious, cause i love mandolin

  • like a viola tunning 4 a mandolin correct?

  • yes. the mandolin family is tuned the same as the violin family for the most part

  • Think of it this way, since they are all in the same family. remove the "Mand" and add "Vio". in this case, it would be tuned to a viola

  • *tears* :'D

  • trully beautiful, well executed, congrats

  • That was a wonderful effort. Fine playing. Awesome.

You sound like a mini- quartet with those bass notes stuck in there. Two questions -- who made your mandocello? and is it tuned as a octave then? -- it sounds to high pitched or a cello. In any case inspiring work.

  • Thanks. This is a Weber octave mandolin tuned higher to the mandola pitch (C,G,D,A).The 2 bass string pairs, C and G, have an octave higher string in each pair to produce a fuller sound.

  • Tim, I've been looking at some of these but the Webers are too expensive. Do you know if the Michael Kelly ones are decent?

  • @timallanstrings

    Tim, absolutely wonderful.

This mandola has together with your playing an amazing sound.

Last time I have tried a "mandriola", like a mandolin, but with three strings, like this (ggg', d'd'd'', a'a'a'', e''e''e'''). This reminds me of your tuning. A lot of the older banjo players in our banjo band do such tunings with their banjos too.

Do you have any hints for such tunings for the tenor banjo?

And what is the model name of your weber mandola?

    Kind regards Christian

  • awesome!

  • effortless tremolo!

  • Where are the other two guys I can hear playing?

    (joke)

  • fantastic!

  • Well u play the Mandolin good. But the Song was fast very fast =)

  • MASTER

  • do you have anything transcribed out for this... if so id definitely like a copy... quite superb...

  • how much did your mandolin cost?

  • is ther tabs?

  • dam nice

  • very nice, nice mandola as well

  • damn i want to play as u =)

  • nice your the best besti mean best

  • Very good job! I like to play bandolin, and i will learn godfather :P very good

  • That was fantastic. I've listened to it twice so far, it might be one of those pieces of music I listen to everyday now. Thanks. Grazie. Danke Schon usw.

  • This is excellent. great job.
