II was lucky enough to see Ella play on Boston Common, one of the Concerts on the Common back in the 70's when she was still touring. What great phrasing and tone. Oscar Peterson opened up, playing a huge Bosendorfer concert grand... a lovely show. I'm so glad her recordings livev on. She was a such a great talent. RIP, Ella, I love you!!!!

I really love listening to Ella & Billie et al. Note how they sing the melody and that is enough. So many singers today oversing songs as though a good melody and the emotion in the singers voice was not enough.

@nnknkable There is a tendency by many singers today to sing LOUD as if that makes up for any lack of nuance in their voice. I see people applaud when they do which just encourages the singer to keep doing it.

@Nocaro Sometimes I think people will aplaud anything. What matters is the singer has the courage to perform rather than what they sing. Singing is all too much about gaining a social status today rather than expressing things.

My other complaint is songs are not really about anything anymore, They don't tell stories like say Mack the Knife and are certainly not as daring. All too often, it is just some chump whining about their feelings as if we cared and then we aplaud because they were brave
