I was with him the nite he set fire the the announcement. He and I were both batteling our demons . I still do at times. He was a friend and a great musician.. Thank for posting.
Originally released as a single by RCA imprint Groove Records in 1965 (the same year it shut down), it flopped. Then RCA rereleased it in late 1973, and it made the top 20 of the Hot 100 and Easy Listening (now Adult Contemporary) charts, becoming Charlie's biggest self-penned hit. ("Every Time You Touch Me" was a co-write.) Of the record 5 #1s in the calendar year, tied w/ Eddy Arnold, this got an honor even "Behind Closed Doors" didn't: it was the #1 country song of '74!
@CharlieAndRonnie "...in A calendar year." Anyways, this was another quality recording Charlie put feeling into! R.I.P. 12/14/32-7/25/95. BTW, 2 people were disappointed that there wouldn't be anymore, and then got so angry that they felt the only possible way to deal with it (an inappropriate one, if I may add) was to click thumbs down.
If you like Charlie Rich check out "Just a Little Bit Sweet" by Charlie. It is fantastic. It is one of his earliest hits and got lost someway along the way.
In the 80's (I think) Charlie had a record something about a merry-go-round. It was a haunting sound and I can't remember what it was but I don't find it here. Can anyone help? ~OneKewpie~
@OneKewpie Charlie was my father in law....My mother in law Margaret Ann Rich wrote the song your thinking of, Lifes little ups and downs... A great song...Ricky Van Shelton had a hit on it also....Life has its little ups and downs, like ponies on a merry go round....Rolling Stone Magazine called it the Anthem for the working man...thanks for your comment
@kleelaurie I grew up listening to Charlie's version of Life's Little Ups and Downs, and my daughter grew up with RVS's version, just an amazing song! I love this man and his entire body of work...very jealous that you were so close to him...
this song brings me back to the wonderful seventies...when i was a young man...and i use to listen to the wonderful man on the radio...back then you had to listen to a country western station would love hearing him come on..and sing his big hits and this was one of them....
I've always liked CR's work. During my freshman year in high school, "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" were constantly on the radio. Going back a little further, I found this and other fine Rich records that had preceded his mainstream stardom. Charlie had a fine voice and he sang these songs very well. RIP:) --
Everything that Charlie sings is a winner - he can sing a ballad like no other. I love this song. I agree with him about not liking who was presented the award as Entertainer of the Year (in Country Music). Too often now some of the newer artists want to get their foot in the door of country music and then when they get a break they don't want to be labled as just country. Are there truly any actual love songs anymore that do sound romantic? Thanks for posting this. - Paula
@twinPaula12 no, modern country music is as mundane as a dead skunk in the middle of a remote "country road'. The classics are as good as it could ever get and you would just have to hold on to the "greats" as your source of country music inspiration. Thank god a couple are still alive today... but it wont be long till they are gone too.
I love to hear this song...it brings back lots of great memories of my dad, he was a big Charlie Rich fan. My father passed away in 1986 at the age of 49. One of my fondest memories of him is riding in the car listening to 8 track tapes (Charlie Rich, The Statler Brothers, etc.) singing our hearts out!! I'm sure some of you can relate! Incidentally, my dad was also a HUGE John Wayne fan! Charlie did the title song for one of the Dukes movies, Cahill U.S. Marshall, another great song
@MelisaMLunsetter64 I can relate, I lost my dad this year at 84 years old. I remember the 8 track tapes but it was when Charley Pride and Loretta were young. He loved his music and about the only time he would watch Tv was John wayne movies and he would lay on his belly with a pillow and watch them. Loved all the western books also
I love this song and almost forgot about it! I went fishin down in the Gulf of California shortly after finding this song and was humming it the whole time i was out in the boat! Thanks for posting!
Can anyone find the song by Charlie Rich, called Mountain Dew? I would love to hear the song again & I think that is the name of the song, and it was on his album where the title track was The Most Beautiful Girl. Please help!
Someone please finish this thought... I read a Waylon bio where he described a deal at the CMAs where Charlie, as a presenter/ announcer opened a ballot declaring the either:
Male Vocalist of the year (John Denver)
or
Female Vocalist of the year (ONJ).
Either way as soon as he opened the envelope and saw who the winner was he whipped out his lihter and simultaneously set the announcement ablaze and announced the "winner". Needless to say CR was never again welcome as a presenter at the CMAs
Yes, he did do that. It was John Denver as Entertainer of the Year in 1975. It was his reaction at the perceived shift in country music circles toward a more "pop" oriented sound. Many people agreed with him.
@kcope001 Oh how I wish someone had that video posted on youtube. I have been looking for it forever. Imagine what Charlie would think of today's country music scene!
@kcope001 It definitely wasn't in response to the shift, as Charlie himself was a crossover, and it would've been a hypocritical move, plus it would've carried more weight in that case had a traditionalist like George Jones done it instead. Charlie did many different things in his career (not enough space to mention it all), and he himself once said: "At first, I didn't dig country. As a matter of fact, we put it down because we wanted to be jazz pickers."
@kcope001 Actually, CR was a little fried that night, not quite himself. Many true country performers had been knocking themselves dead trying to make it in Country Music only to be snubbed in favor of artists ((JD, ONJ, et al) who were NOT country and just putting out a country album to help establish themselves. Those albums got promoted and so got airplay and so got awards.
Charlie Rich and many others hated the whole farce. So Charlie set fire to the John Denver announcement!
A great man indeed, and knowing his wife wrote several songs as well..he is a great composer and artist....rest his soul, The Silver Fox was best name for him, very compassionate man
Holy Cow! I had no idea his career went back so far! He was an incredibly good looking, great sounding guy-hard to believe we don't hear more of his old stuff-thanks so much for this post! What a treasure!
Back in the 70s,a good country song, like this one, could cross over to the pop chart and attract younger listeners. This was in the pop top 40 the same time as A Very Special Love Song!
Another one you never hear any more. Reminds me of a drive to North Vernon, Ind in Feb 1974. Heard it in a restaurant over that way. Love to hear that man sing-diesd too young.
This is my favorite by Charlie Rich.... There certainly "wont be any more", Charlie... "Silver Fox". I just love his mellow, soft, sexy voice....I could listen to him all day... and never tire of him.
Great song for surviving a breakup. Great vocal from the Silver Fox, just like "Most Beautiful Girl In the World."

Please bring back country music like this. The stuff on today's country radio is a joke and an insult to the real country artists of yesteryear!

Charlie Rich is most handsome man I've ever laid eyes on.
Though, my husband, Bob, and actor Warren Beatty are close runner-ups.
I'm sure y'all are aware that Elvis wanted to be Charlie Rich?
