LOVE this album! better than anything else released at the time!! I laugh at those who pay too much attention to Cheyl Cole, Ga Ga and Coldplay!! that stuff has no soul!
not dark enough, great song, too light in sound, needs get dark, really dark, to go with his dark vocals, sounds too commercial this sound, go on get DARKER
Trying to pass off mediocre music as good by comparing it to someone else won't work. Lady Gaga is irrelevant. She's not the performer here. Depeche Mode's last good record was Violator and their best is Black Celebration.
SOTU is a great album, perhaps back to their roots - but now with experience.
Looking at the comments (of this song and other SOTU posted on YT), it looks to me that there are two DM fans - one's that like this album and hate others, and one's that hate this album and like others. That's kinda typical of musicians. It would be hard to be pioneering in the music industry - and DM certainly are.
This is one of my fav songs on SOTU - but not my fav all-time album (Ultra wins there).
@ranzau I'm glad to see that there are other Ultra fans out there :)
And yes, im the kind of fan that loves their previous albums -id say between Violator and PTA- but have a hard time on SOTU. But...I've just listened to Wrong, Peace, Jezebel and now this one...so I'm kind of reconsidering my judgment here.
The issue with the recent DM albums is that people will think: how this song would sound if Alan Wilder was the producer?
Can you imagine? this song sounding like Violator or Songs of faith and devotion? Not this "casiotone" sound but a massive inimaginable atmosphere like in the Recoil albums.... that is what happen.
I love DM. I have for 25 years. But goddamn, the artwork for this album is easily the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. I thought the artwork for Playing The Angel was bad, then this!? Jesus. Anton has fucking lost it. It looks like a retarded infant monkey designed it.
@ebaysrus I agree. I also think this is Depeche Mode's worst album. With each passing album, it seems DM misses the target farther and wider. The songs just don't seem to resonate like they used to. I guess the roughshod cover fits the songs and vice versa.
they should have released this one as a single rather than the awful "Peace". It's ne of the more interesting songs on the album but it still needs beefing up imo
this are what i think are the top ten DM songs 1 precious 2 enjoy the silence 3 personal jesus 4 it's not good 5 shake the disease 6 perfect 7policy of truth 8 wrong 9 strange love 10 never let me down again the order it's not important.
I miss the analog sound. It formed its own subgenre, which died within electronic music by the mid-eighties, when everyone started using more than 40% samples.
I like sampled elec. music, too, but the analog sound of early 80s was unique & exotic--a musical anomaly. Some beautiful sounds. Only really used well by DM, OMD, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Walter Carlos. The rock bands & pop bands only used simple 3 track sequences with one or two waveforms--like Steve Miller, Pink Floyd.
deaddavid21--the reason you say that is: BC is the album in which Depeche Mode started using Samples as opposed to entirely analog waveforms. In other words, the difference between the digital sound and analog sound. The analog sound is the early 80's sound assoc with Blondie, Gary Newman, etc...sawtooths, bleeps, pads. The more realistic set of soundbytes in BC are samples, recorded from real world objects.
"Black Celebration" is THE Depeche Mode album in my opinion but the occasional single thereafter but am only going by what I've heard. Their music prior to BC is good too for its naive nature though naive not being a total let down. Some of it was still quite stark and adult with all corniness aside. This track is very appealing and I'm glad to hear that they are still going well.

I do not think DM should have released this album, the sound is wrong, its almost as if they tried to go back to the
80's. I really wish they had carried on with Playing the angel's feel. I am however still amped about going to watch them at the 02 15/12/09, more for the size of it and performances from earlier albums. Hopefuly they'll do a tour featuring Speak and Spell to Black celebration, possibly Music for the masses.
But this song is quite good, I love the synths between the singing. Obviously you like DM because of how they used to sound in the 80's and I too started to be their fan from listening to all those albums with Alan WIlder but hey, give them a chance to want to continue and mix everything they have been doing so far. See you on the 15th ;)
I like every dm album except this one, Songs of faith and devotion and Playing the angel being the top 2 respectively. Their first few albums are awesome, they got the sound/feel right. I think after hearing them live as a full-on band on touring the angel @ 02 music festival (which I downloaded) the electronica just sounds out of place..... Have an awesome gig though. Summing very special about DM on home ground.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a grower. Upon it's initial release, I saw through how well composed and intricate this album really is. It's now one of my favorites of the year.
SOTU is a strange album. it definitely grows on you. songs i didn't care for a few listens through are very satisfying now.
i know a lot of you do, but i remember Exciter getting a similar type reaction from DM fans. some love it, hate it or regard it as a weaker showing from them.
Little Soul for me is almost an instant classic while others seem off to me. so i say this album is niether one of their better or worse albums, but their strangest. SOTU shows DM still has it.
Listening to what people say...its interesting for sure.
I was listening to Depeche iloads n the 80.s and surely in those days they were the one and only. and they made a huge impact on me.
They are still great of course however...
I miss the energy.
I would like them to more go back to their social roots. To become a bit more "street". They where very critical of the system back then and that brought a fresh energy. And Alan Wilder of course...we all miss him.
I think that regarding to the lyrics they are a little bit deeper now, cause they're criticising not the system but our mentality that's actually the only reason for the system's existence. I believe it's deeper. Maybe not! Take care, KingofIbiza.
I don't mind this song or a couple others on the album but I'd probably chose one of their other albums like Playing the Angel. No disrespect, I just think everyone has a different taste in music that shouldn't be judged. Go Depeche mode!
sorry everyone i have to say although you all do like it and i dont oppose opinions, and being a fan of depeche modes for 25 years, i have to say i just cannot stomach this album, i even feel that the poor production and filler album exciter was better than this album. this is the first album of depeche that i have never and will probably never own. i have listened numerous times and feel they could have done alot better especially following up playing the angel which was great listening.
incomb, also a 25 plus year fan. i hated songs of faith and devotion in 93 until i saw the songs lived and was honestly touched spiritually, i went to the DC show last week and it once more fell into place do yourself a favour and catch the tour. i would hope you will recant the negativity.
albums, sometimes need that little push to convert, SOTU live i hope does it for you as it did with me.
something happens at that concert it all comes home all 25 years of it
Interesting point about seeing them live. I was sort of into DM, then I saw them on the 1985 SGR tour in DC (Warner Theater) - blew me away - I decided I wanted to do music as a main pursuit and they became my favorite band. The thing with this new CD is I think it challenges their fans - which art is supposed to do. It hits me sort like Black Celebration did - that took awhile to get into, and while it's not a personal favorite I respect other fans love of it and it showed growth.
i respect your opinion and agree having seen them twice in concert and yes the first was in 93 for SOFD. second was in 98. the thing i respect of all dm fans is their enthusiasm towards the band. growing up i had to deal with terms, douche mode from friends and i too defended them, but i still feel this album was less than it could have been. only an opinion and glad you could catch them live this time around.
i absolutely agree with you incmob, i've been a dm fan since before alan wilder had joined the band, alan was one of the key figures in dms sound, when he joined the band he pushed each dm albums and sound to the next level, he pushed martin to write better, helped david to sing a certain way to enhance and harmonize wih the music, after alan left the band in the mid 90's there was something missing the quality wasn't there any more.. they should ask alan to come back..
agreed MrDm, and well said. i think that wilder took them in a much needed and different direction, even influencing the often underated songs of faith and devotion with live instrumentation. stylistically, and musically i think that it is always good to grow and change, and step out of the comfort zone but it is amazing how diverse yet great the albums are from some great reward to songs of faith and devotion are. it would be great to see wilder come back though.
you know she REALLY isn't that bad. Some her influences include some of the greatest artists of the 80s. Granted her songs like Poker Face don't house much intelligence but her piano songs like 'Speechless' have a lot of feeling and emotion.
But I would like to see her write something like this, I'll give you that.
@depecheme24 I totally agree.... DEPECHE MODE gave me life filtered from crap. they go deeply to the source of emotions... Most of people they dont even understand the sensations cause they are dead inside.
@depecheme24 I just love depeche mode. they have been around for 30 years and their music keeps evolving while they stay the same. they are one of the greatest bands of all time and they keep getting better with age. they continue to explore the ranges of music and the sounds of the universe. long live DM
Acatually, i'll keep ONLY the sounds ... the return of old analog synthesizers is something GREAT and when i knew that they would use vintage devices for the new album, i felt so full of hope ... BUT songs became boring and "weak" ... "Violator" is their LAST very good production...!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The band that most of us older fans knew as Depeche Mode died when Alan Wilder left. Let's face it, these guys don't have as good of production like the "Violator" days. I'll take "World in my Eyes" anyday over this!
being a huge Duran Duran fan (as well as a huge Depeche Mode fan), i'd take Dave Gahan over Simon LeBon any day of the week! Dave's voice has made a huge change compared to Simon's... Simon's voice has gotten kinda squeaky over the years...
awesome song by the way... even if people have criticized this, its still good, sure you cant compare it to the classic stuff because thats what it is, classic, its untouchable, but it is still good... what a way to keep making great music! DM rules! xD
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I also think that Exciter was better.
Of couse, not their strongest album at all, but it has more the tipical D.M. sound than SOTU.
This new album is rather experimental, although I don't understand what they are experimenting with.
Exciter and Playing the angel were both weak compared to the preceeding records, but you could hear the brandmarks of the band and the racines from the 80ths much better.
Listening to SOTU I often don't believe this is really Depeche Mode!
Huh? You obviously know nothing about music, and surely nothing about DM. "Exciter" was completely digital and lacked any melody, nothing like any of their other albums including SOTU, which is not as melodious as previous albums but is much better than "Exciter"!

"the copied the beginning from "shave it" from fad gadget. this album is the last stage of their decadence.. a fucking good group transformeted into a mtv product, repeting melodic and predigested shit and their limpest materials. Bye bye depeche, you're dead"

the copied the beginning from "shave it" from fad gadget. this album is the last stage of their decadence.. a fucking good group transformeted into a mtv product, repeting melodic and predigested shit and their limpest materials. Bye bye depeche, you're dead
Is it only me that think this album is genious with the analogic sound and that its clear that they had fun during the making of this album when playing with old synthezisers? I don't know why people are whining that much. It's a great album and far away from their worse as some say...

Terrible album. DM has reached the bottom. This song sounds like a Robbie Williams or Gwen Stefani song. Where is the great band i used to love? The last good album was Ultra. The rest is just sh!te!!!!
For Pagratti007, sounds to me like you´re more fond of the guitar laden, string loaded side of this band, whicjh is fine, I consider SOFAD one of their finest works, but DM became known as a synthpop band, so this could be considered a return to their roots.
Don't judge by the videos i've favotited in here mute disease. My favorite albums are Black Celebration, Some Great Reward and Violator. I like SOFAD too, i don't mind the guitars. To me, SOTU is a pseudo vintage albums that borrows heavily from their past material because Gore is lacking of inspiration . Gahan as a songwriter is worthless IMO, i don't even consider his songs. DM used to be a great band, making unique music. Now they're just out for the money. SOTU is full of forgettable crap.
Also while I dont consider this their best work(at least so far, I havent heard every single song yet) I wouldnt diss it so much. Remember how SOFAD was dissed at the beggining for "alienating fans"???
um. judging by the 4 cuts i've heard thus far from this "leaked" album. this sounds like some of their best stuff ever. the sound harkens back to the album "black celebration"...and "some great reward"....it is indeed, classic D.MODE.

@depecheme24 I just love depeche mode. they have been around for 30 years and their music keeps evolving while they stay the same. they are one of the greatest bands of all time and they keep getting better with age. they continue to explore the ranges of music and the sounds of the universe. long live DM

Well, I try to write a construcive comment:
The main problem is not Alan's deparure, but the fact, that the boys don't take themselve seriously enough.
They could do a much better album, if they done more energy and conciousness by songwriting and by constructing the soundscape.
Of course they need better producers, this Ben Hillier is a loosy member, he ruined the fantastic songs of PTA too.
They must use better synths, because the sound is terrible.
They're legends, but became mediocre now.
tomialpha 2 years ago 3
Acatually, i'll keep ONLY the sounds ... the return of old analog synthesizers is something GREAT and when i knew that they would use vintage devices for the new album, i felt so full of hope ... BUT songs became boring and "weak" ... "Violator" is their LAST very good production...!

The band that most of us older fans knew as Depeche Mode died when Alan Wilder left. Let's face it, these guys don't have as good of production like the "Violator" days. I'll take "World in my Eyes" anyday over this!

This is probably the best song on the album, and even it sucks. That gives you an idea of what a steaming pile of shit this hack job of an album is.
DM is done. It's hard to hear what used to be a great band go out like this. I will still always be a fan, but I will disregard this album.

Simon LeBon o Dave Gahan?
ferruzzi123456 2 years ago
being a huge Duran Duran fan (as well as a huge Depeche Mode fan), i'd take Dave Gahan over Simon LeBon any day of the week!
DM rules! xD

I bought this album on the release day and it's true... the more you listen to it the better it gets.
I have to say that it first kinda disappointed me but now I almost love all the songs on it.
This is my favorite song.
Depeche Mode fan for almost 16 years :D

I also think that Exciter was better.
Of couse, not their strongest album at all, but it has more the tipical D.M. sound than SOTU.
This new album is rather experimental, although I don't understand what they are experimenting with.
Exciter and Playing the angel were both weak compared to the preceeding records, but you could hear the brandmarks of the band and the racines from the 80ths much better.
Listening to SOTU I often don't believe this is really Depeche Mode!
tomialpha 2 years ago
Huh? You obviously know nothing about music, and surely nothing about DM. "Exciter" was completely digital and lacked any melody, nothing like any of their other albums including SOTU, which is not as melodious as previous albums but is much better than "Exciter"!

Well...Exciter was nice.. I liked it, but this is great too!! I like everything they do!! Going to see The Tour Of The Universe in Seattle!!!

too simple for DM. really, it's not an album of the year.
moreover, i think they should change sound' producer. it looks like we come back in 1981

The rest is just sh!te!!!!
pagrati007 2 years ago
For Pagratti007, sounds to me like you´re more fond of the guitar laden, string loaded side of this band, whicjh is fine, I consider SOFAD one of their finest works, but DM became known as a synthpop band, so this could be considered a return to their roots.
mutedisease 2 years ago
Don't judge by the videos i've favotited in here mute disease. My favorite albums are Black Celebration, Some Great Reward and Violator. I like SOFAD too, i don't mind the guitars. To me, SOTU is a pseudo vintage albums that borrows heavily from their past material because Gore is lacking of inspiration . Gahan as a songwriter is worthless IMO, i don't even consider his songs. DM used to be a great band, making unique music. Now they're just out for the money. SOTU is full of forgettable crap.
pagrati007 2 years ago
Also while I dont consider this their best work(at least so far, I havent heard every single song yet) I wouldnt diss it so much. Remember how SOFAD was dissed at the beggining for "alienating fans"???

Here I can find some traces of their good form, but only one good song can't make an album "perfect".
They became the shadows of themselves.
Even Exciter was far better (their last album which I rally liked!)
tomialpha 2 years ago
um. judging by the 4 cuts i've heard thus far from this "leaked" album. this sounds like some of their best stuff ever. the sound harkens back to the album "black celebration"...and "some great reward"....it is indeed, classic D.MODE.
