Gainsbourg wrote the lyrics, which are indeed genius. But the song goes back much, much further. It is actually a ballad, sung - very well - by Vera Lynn of all people. I love Francoise's version, even if I can't stop thinking of Herp Albert. Apparently there is a German version. I'd love to hear that.

After watching the Vera Lynn version, I'm even more impressed the way the French translation adds in the wordplay of the '-ex' sound rhymes and all the words that end in a silent x. Clever and catchy and Francoise makes it sexxxy.

@lcozzarelli Yes, this version is indeed only written lyricly by Gainsbourg, but it's a real piece, pretty genious word and line use, with ix'es and ex'es.. I'm actually half French, so I really love this one..great rhyming.. But wasn't it Paul Anka who originally wrote this?
