SPOILERS :After I watched the director's commentary, I understood what the movie is really about... The woman, Jess, originally died in a car crash, since she was such a bad person, abusive, ungrateful, etc. She went to hell, her own personal hell that the Greek god Aeusos, created for her.The cab driver who takes her to the docks is, in fact, Aeusos. She can't change the pattern because she's already dead, just unaware of it. (original posted by Sonic4K6)
What I think is a main lack of logic is, that she behaves the same again and again, although she knows about the circle.
Why would anyone in that situation go on behaving the same? The many prooves of the many circles should've shown her, that she should REALLY break the pattern.
trying to kill the others obviously WAS the pattern since long.
@wasistdaswasdasist Because she is emntally ill...when someone is in a state of psychosis their logic leaves and expands so they can't think like someone who is sane and rational...have seen people like this...
(people who doesn't understand the movie or ending) 1st: it's a CYCLE that she started in the movie! 2nd: at the end she PROMISE the taxi cab driver she'll be back and she LIED, that is why the cycle started in the begining.. If she fulfill her promise to have come back and instead not to try to save her son anymore.. all of this woudn't kept on happening all over again like a CYCLE! It's like this saying.. "in the begining was the end" get it? good day :D
Ok this is the most creepy and weird movie I have ever seen. There`s no getting out of it. The cycle is going to reap itself........ Like I said creepy.
The taxi driver is meant to be the devil or the angel of death and he caused all of this for her, making her think she could change the loop and save herself. Shame really.
(SPOILER COMMENT, don't read till you've finished the movie):
I think her waking up on the beach to start everything again is a bit of a cop out. It's like the writer looped her to death and realized the story has trapped itself, so he wrote her to magically appear on a beach after she goes overboard! Wished he managed to loop that part more smoothly to connect. Still cool movie though! Thanks for the upload!
So, my question is, WHERE DID THE SHORT-PANTS JESS COME FROM? She didn't certainly come from her house, because she just killed her original self. But, then, how could she be there to board the ship and go sailing?
@maujo2009 Hmm, that could be a possibility although I don't quite agree! I think her guilt after what was the first time the car accident happened caused the infinite loop to happen. Afterall, the cab driver did advise her that there's no point saving her son but she wouldn't listen and choose to continue this cycle. Hell is what you make it to be.
But anyway, a good movie ending will have many different interpretations ;)
8:41, the logo on the drum is the same as the one on the ship!
As there seems to be a Greek theme going on (Sysiphus and Aeolus), I suspect the cab driver might be Charon, ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased to the underworld. He tells Jess there's no point in saving her son, and so offers her a chance to end this continuous hell of hers by ferrying her to the next world. But Jess opts to keep trying to save her son instead. Perhaps to atone for being an abusive mother?
Jess tried to break the cycle, but failed. She thinks about it but decides to go sailing again in another attempt to break it, and thus save everyone else, her kid and herself. But the crash leaves her confused about the events. She can´t remember it all so she cannot break it - and thus it starts over and over again. The pile of dead seagulls is another testimony of this. Anyway, that is what I think. Cool movie. Thanks for the upload. Cheers.
@fmg50 However, she will still fail again. It's to be understood that is the Jess from this "next" loop the one that kills the guy and his girlfriend with the knife.
Hey, we are forgetting a detail: the taxi driver. He says at a moment: will you come back? He somehow knows that she is in a never ending loophole. He has driven her an infinite times to the harbor. He is to make sure that she always gets to the harbor to begin the story again. Weird stuff! :S
@DutchTakeshiro interesting. i also thought why not a pile of cars and her sons bodies piling up either at the street or at the morgue. people would notice it. so i think maybe she is a ghost in limbo and the car accident and taxi scenes are just part of her memory. so thats why its imposible to break the triangle, she is dead and keeps trying to change what happened while she was alive. its like a nightmare you cant wake from, a torturous limbo. creepy.
@DutchTakeshiro the taxi driver is death. He shows up precisely after Jess' car accident. He offers to take her with him, but then she cheats him, because by boarding the Triangle again all the events would occur all over again. Thus, she's like Sysyphus: doomed to lift the rock up to the top of the mountain just to loose it again and repeat the cycle.
@maujo2009 But this time around the cycle she will have learned everything and know what's going to happen, so her main goal can be, once at that point, to prevent the car crash. This is an ending that can be interpreted many ways, and I'm pretty sure she'll stop the cycle.
@MrTiki7690 Yeah, that's a way of seeing it. However, remember that in one of the iterations we see Jess killing the other two guys with a knife instead of the shotgun. This is clearly a Jess from a future iteration which we never see. I don't disagree with you, but I think the movie suggests that she just will loop over and over forever. Sad ending, I think.
@MrTiki7690 I don't think she will, as she went through it several times already. The beginning of the film is the same, as the ending. This shows, that she went through already at the beginning of the movie and she will agin. Thats how I see it.
Wow, what a mindbender! That was really quite sad. Maybe the eternal loop is the punishment mentioned earlier (or is it later?) in the Aeolus story about cheating death and all that. Clever movie.
This movie was pretty good but i Still dont know why she was in a loop. Is it because she was a horrible mom to the autisitc kid and then killed him and herself in a car crash and now this is her purgatory? Thats the best i can come up with... 8-/
@Ivoreej Yeah thats what I'm thinking too. The loop seems to end right there at the car crash. Then she seems to lose her memory or at least most of it thats why she has deja vu.haha It was a pretty cool movie.
@Ivoreej look up the The story of Sysiphus. If you saw the ship's name, its Aeolus. In greek myth, King Aeolus was Sysiphus' father. The store will explain it
@DeadByDawnVids4 at part 5 you see another jess and the second masked jess (the one that the jess we follow could shot) ,the second masked jess got killed by the other jess and there ends the loop so the son still willdie , i think
@davdd1032 I don't think so. She gets on that ship again to repeat the circle. In the movie, after she's on board, she says" I have de jejavu everytime I turned a corner." That proves she doesn't remember what happend before.
@irfan123100 Not really, I believe maybe she has some sort of autism that causes her to forget things or maybe some amnesia after the crash, but she will never think differently and the loop will continue forever. It could be that she thinks it's a dream.
I think Sonic4K6 summed it up pretty well :)

Great movie. I have to say my favorite part was when she looked upon the pile of dead
seagulls. I tried to figure out how many there were; how many times she had stood there and
added one more, how many times she had been caught in that loop. Omg, the idea of spending
your life after death in this creepy infinity is horrifying to me.
