Angelica, I agree with you! This do no not means that for the same reason, the young Rubinstein was considered " not ok for Chopin" because to much "filologico" and the same destiny was reserved to the pianist of the end of the 19th century in comparaison with Rubinstein. Repeat, I agree with you!
Probbably his way of playing doesn't appeal of majority pianists of today, for the reason of his exaggerated rubatos, however his interpratation touch my heart and I can't help the emotion when I hear Paderewsky playing Chopin works..
Cicerone63, that is exactly why I usually find the playing of conservatory pianists to be intolerably monotonous and absurdly pedantic. Nothing alive. Please read the quotations on my channel about "Interpretive freedom".
I would not say that his playing is not enough to finish conservatories. I would say that conservatories are not enough to create Paderewskies.
This is without a shadow of a doubt. the VERY best performance of this ballade on record. I've been listening to it over and over for several months --- and listening to everyone else play it too.
Many do very well, but Paderewski had a rare blend of virility and sensitivity that seems ideal for this. It's so deeply felt, and so perfectly realized.
He did deteriorate in his latter years, but THIS is just SUPERB. I can't say enough for it.
This is masterly performance in which the rubato (for which Paderewski was so (in)famous) grows naturally out of the music. The approach to the final climax sweeps along and culminates in playing of real splendour.
A true superstar of his generation, Paderewski's love for Poland was almost matched by his love of America. FDR made a special exemption for him to be entombed inside the USS Maine memorial at Arlington cemetary until Poland was again free. However, Paderewski's will required that his heart stay here in America. Poland now has him back, but America has his heart.
I was born in Polish family. I can say You that it's easly to understand the way P. is playing for Polish nation at those days and today. It's so "polish" way of playing - delicate with so many emotions and pain. You don't need to be an artist to understand that, only remeber the history of Your family,Your grandfather who was fighting during WWII and Your grandmother who lost children killed by "friendly" Soviet . His love to Poland was so obvious not only by words but the way he was playing..
There is no doubt that the best polish pianist play Chopin with passion specific only for this nation... No one play jazz like Niggers from Dixieland, no one play Bouzooki like Greeks... And no one play Chopin like polish pianist.... And this music really suggest the idea of polish, traumatic history as the Blues suggest the idea of Niggers' traumatic slavery...
Simply beautiful, not only the music, the silence in this performance is equally important. Nothing here is accidental, everything is mastered with the higher potential, Paderwski reigns of the piano, and he is splendid and truly moving. Rare talent!
Is this available as a piano roll emulation for MIDI? What sort of piano is this (sounds like 9') and what reproducing system? This is fairly incredible...beautiful reproduction.
JimmieBluffdweller--To answer your question of a year ago, this is a Duo-Art recording (roll #6832-8 recorded January 1925. I just posted a new video of what is likely a much smaller piano playing this roll, but it is clearly the same performance. I would be careful of MIDI emulations--which usually sound canned by making the mistake of equating DA-coded "power" with MIDI "velocity", ignoring that different numbers of simultaneously played notes at the same DA power give different volume.
Cortot has always been my favorite at this...until I heard this(Thanks to the His Cryptiness)This is even better than the Cortot for me.Usually I can imagine how it
Beyond the fact that this performance has the incredible emotional-spiritual intensity & focus of Paderewski's mature style,it has something else...that of creating expectation through several notes, pausing as if to pause longer,& then cutting in much sooner creating such spontaneity in feeling.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.

El es de Podolia, no Polonia ,aunque luego fuera primer ministro de Polonia.
Para mi el mejor interprete de Chopin, por encima de Rubinstein, Horowitz y demas....

Today, probably, Paderewski's way to play piano is not enough to finish conservatory. This do not means that he was not a superb pianist of his time.

You are absolutely right : conservatories are to-day
pianist factories, who create industrial products ( technically good , but without culture and artistic personality)

I think that this performance has great presence. Paderewski's approach is a great one. So full of breadth, drama and an almost sensual beauty. Bravo

This is the truth tradition of Europian music philosophy and interpretation...
There are technical mistakes, but this is the top of our culture...
But today It's changing with all the pianists from China and Korea...
