  • looks pretty cool but i think its a bit hard to work with a workspace like this...

  • @3zvan I actually find it easier to work with a workspace setup this way

  • @3zvan I think this would be an amazing workspace with a multi touch input device

  • That's pretty creative, as far as keeping the cube invisible. Never thought about that before but now I'm going to try it.

  • Can you do a tutorial on how to do this? the only thing I can find is SuSE Studio and I want to base mine off of ubuntu or debian, not SuSE.

  • @QsoftStudios I used Linux From Scratch as the base, which will get you the basic system installed, then "Community Driven Beyond Linux From Scratch" for some misc apps (including Xorg); compiz fusion, bbkeys, gmrun and setting hotkeys completes my non-desktop OS. It's quite a bit of effort to get it running, but the system grows with you as you use it; I haven't done a recompile since the video was made, but the system is quite different - it grew in the directions I needed as I needed it.

  • @NeoChameleon Geez Is it alot or programing? im assuming that thares alot of writing bash code

  • @QsoftStudios It's a lot of `./configure; make; make install`, really; and then google for when things break

  • It certainly does look pretty awesome. Congratulations!

  • @MiroslawZalewski thanks :)

  • OMFG ITS SO PURRTYY HURR DURR

  • what loginmanager are you using?

  • @S1lv3rr0ck3r Orthos, link is in the description

  • Looks awesome. Is there an iso download anywhere?

  • @Deliciousfruit233 Nope =) it's custom compiled (the list of programs that are being used are in the description)

  • u have the download for it?

  • @ShadoLegend The download for what, exactly? I have the links for all of the components in the info section. If you're asking have I released the distro in an official sense the answer is 'no' - it's customised to how I use it, anyone else would find it quite difficult to use.

  • ya i was talking if u have the link for the distro itself ya but if its hard for other people then nevermind

  • Well can't make it work orthos DM on ubuntu 9.10.

    Can u help?

  • @KevinHaroldSkinner Thanks a lot for the advice! Yeah, I'd avoid an Acer like the plague! Will do some research and report back with my findings. Thanks again!

  • (y) =D

  • What desktop recorder did you use? (Looks very nice. =p)

  • "ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 640x360 -r 24 -i :0.0 -vcodec ffv1 -me_method epzs -y screencap.avi" then downcoded to get a smaller file.

And thanks, it looks quite a bit different now that I've grown into it more.

  • Nice, I'll give it a try, because either it's one hell of a fast code, or you have one hell of a computer. =P

  • that is very very sexy, not needing more than one desktop would be soo nice

  • yay for orthos!

  • idnt dat special

  • What is the point of all these pretty, but useless effects? What's the point of having a pretty-looking Linux box when you can't find drivers for printers, scanners or webcams? I like Linux, but they should stop all the Compiz and Beryl effects crap and concentrate on hardware support!

  • Multiple desktops is far more efficient than just having the one, the driver support in linux is actually rather good if you know what you are doing.. and if it doesn't exist you can write it yourself

You talk about "Linux" as if it is one company making it - it isn't, it's a horde of programmers writing what they want on their computers.

Driver support wouldn't be in windows either if hardware makers didn't write the code for it.

  • Fair enough, I see your point, but as much as I would like to be able to use Linux, the distros that I used (SuSE, Ubuntu, Mint) have always had problems with hardware recognition, and I (and many others) arent tech-aware enough to do anything about it...

  • I'm just going to state that, unless you have the drivers for something like, oh I don't know, your wireless card for example(on disk of course), Linux becomes your only option due to the fact that it has the MOST out of the box pre-compiled hardware drivers. Not only is it pretty, but Linux also doesn't bug up half as much as Windows, AND the whole virus free, actually being in control of your own computer is nice. Not to mention free is a LOT nicer than $200+ for Windows(Not kidding.). =D

  • @KevinHaroldSkinner Ok, my bad! I just tried Ubuntu 9.10 on my Mac (via Virtualbox) and it is very good! My Mac is gonna die on me pretty soon, and I can't afford to buy a new one, so I'm seriously considering getting a cheap PC and putting Ubuntu on it. I just need to find out what laptop would be a good choice for installing Ubuntu on to....
