  • It highlights to me and my generation how fortunate we are today for the sacrifices those men and women made to defeat an evil man and his ideologies,I have nothing to complain about living today, just trying to be a useful member of society

  • My Grandfather was at Dunkirk. When they were comming into town they met up with a French family whose daughter had somehow lost her leg. They gave her what medical help they couldand had to move on. After the war Grandad was a bit mad from all he saw and went through. My aunt was born in 1947 and he named her Julia after the French girl who lost her leg.....

  • such an impressive steadicam shot

  • The hymn the soldiers sing is 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' - the tune is by English composer Hubert Parry.

  • what are the soldiers singing??

  • I almost died when they killed the horsee! monsterss :(

  • where doing this scene in english

  • @missjadiie2010 We're doing this film in Film Studies:)

  • i cant find this movie anywhere can someone plz tell me what the name is plz??

  • @britishlegion999 It called Atonement. Based on the book of the same name by Ian MacEwan

  • mi piel se transforma en piel de gallina al escuchar esta canción, siento el frío de una guerra y recuerdo esa tarde, en pleno invierno en Auschwitz.

  • fuck it, this just blows me away every time i see it. cinematically, musically.

extremely apt and painful that hymn

  • Drop thy still dews of quietness,

    Till all our strivings cease;

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess

The beauty of thy peace. x2

Breathe through the heats of our desire

    Thy coolness and thy balm;

    Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;

Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,

O still small voice of calm x2

  • @punketa32 shut yer face

  • @PuffMac why?

  • Today, years on. The true story. 70 years. Real thing. Shame no-one else sees this. Hitler saved most. But SS still had their fun. RIP.

  • My father was at Dunkirk with the Fifth Inniskilling Dragoons. He was only twenty. He died eight months after I was born. I'm still trying to get to know him. Thank you for posting this.

  • one of the most beautiful hymns ever written.

I had this played at my wedding, and i noticed tears in the eyes of most of the congregation. still chokes me, and the film. great scene.

  • i love this film so much. it's devastating but heartbreakingly beautiful.

  • the scene is so heartbreaking... I cried when I saw the film. War is so pointless... waste of lives...

  • @myfilmblog If every one thought that way back then we would all be speaking german now

  • Indeed you are correct. War is pointless, but if someone attacks you what else can you do?

  • @PuffMac talk them to death

  • @myfilmblog if that war didn't happen mate, then you would be praying to Hitler, speaking fucking German, and you would see that homosexual swastika everywhere !

  • @myfilmblog this war wasn't pointless, they died for a good cause, defeating fascism.

  • @myfilmblog

War is not pointless, sometimes war is entirely necessary.

The alternative to the Second World War would have been capitulation to the Nazis and the annihilation of countless millions more lives. Sometimes we fight for survival and for what is right.

Watch the videos of soldiers liberating concentration camps and then say that war is pointless.

  • @myfilmblog very true. i came back from Afghan last year and we lost 14 lads from our battalion. Total waste of life for fuck all...

  • twat

  • Churchill didnt give air support

he didnt send the ships either

    naughty churchill

  • @RackJacket churchill wasnt prime minister at this point

  • Yes he was.

  • i wouldnt hav expected this to be this good. keep the work up, trust me. this goes further than any instrument, believe me!!

  • Comment removed

  • I love this scene. The music always makes me teary. Dario Marionelli is a legend!

And stop fucking arguing! For gods sake. Every video has an argument going on. Why don't you all take a chill pill. =] xx

  • I saw Marianelli play this part in 25 minute long suite at the Gent Filmfestival. Breathtaking.

  • i don't think the scene is so far from the historical truth, but i can't imagine drunken soldiers playing like kids in such a mess at dunkirk.

this has been exagerated a lot to give some dramatic dimension to the movie.

  • Imagine again. A lot of crazy stuff went on at Dunkirk, including a group of British soldiers going amo after findiing and drinking a deserted wine cellar dry whilst waiting to be evacuated from the beaches. Read Dunkirk: Fight to the Last Man by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore for the full story.

  • very beatiful....excelent Movie and BSO

  • This whole scene is a loud of fucking bollocks. Historically its pretty far off the mark. The scene suggests that discipline collapsed in the British Army at Dunkirk whereas if you do any research on it the reality is that the withdrawal at Dunkirk was surprisingly ordered considering the desperation of the situation. And the person that said there were no blacks at Dunkirk is spot on. There were no black men in the British Expeditionary Force in 1940. Thats just a fact, there is no racism there

  • no, it's your assertions wildstallyns that are absolute bollocks. "Or a loud (sic ) of bollocks" if you prefer.

  • "who clearly takes his understanding of history from movies."

Er...I lecture in History and Philosophy at a major English university. Lol.

What do you do buddy? Talk about "armchair historians".

What a totally ignorant cunt. Come back when you can do joined-up writing.

  • 'A major English university' yeh well that pretty much sums up the state of University education in Britain today. If a moron like you is teaching these kids what hope do we have? I imagine all that philosophy helps with your understanding of......Dunkirk....lol. You fucking fag. If you were at a half decent University you would be up to your neck in research, not spending your lunch breaks on youtube!

  • What either of you know about hard work and study I dont know. Your a right pair of useless lying lazy kiddy fiddling fucking nonces. Cunt.

  • Say's he who spend's his time feeding people false information on youtube.........

  • saw this film last night and absolutely fell in love with this scene!! I think the choir bit is gorgeous (although the guy at 1:48 doesnt look like he's singing-but who cares?! It still rocks!)

    Dario Marianelli <3

  • I love this scene too. But don't let the guy miming badly spoil it for you! i'm sure if you observed even the most devoted choir singing, there will always be at least one person singing out of sync! :)

  • very beautiful

  • this is hauntingly beautiful :)

  • Fun trivia fact: when it became known how much equipment the Brits had to abandon at Dunkirk, New Zealand sent half of all its rifle ammunition to Britain.

  • Great musical piece and great scene. Sublime and epic.

  • Okey

    Thats fine with me

    I think the same

  • why did they kill that horse?:(

  • because they were hungry..

    sad but true..

  • it was actually because they weren't going to be able to take them back to England and they didnt want to leave anything behind that the enemy could use! Thats why later you see them destroying the jeeps as well!

  • sometimes a scene in a movie makes me completely speechless and my world comes to a complete stop. This is one of them.....absolutely breath taking

  • i sooo agree with you on this

  • This is one of my ALL TIME fav scenes from the movies! It is just stunning!!!

  • the music for this film is one of the best, just oustanding. And as for this scene, that's some world class acting and directing.

  • no one mentioned that the score is by dario marianelli

  • A beautiful masterpiece.

It's touching and moving, a job well done. This scene has no words to describe it. It's a mixture of hope, sadness, and beauty. I absolutely love the song, and this movie.

  • brilliant scene, moving and compelling :)

especially how they put the hymn in

  • Whats with the black dude btw? I'm pretty sure there were no black guys at Dunkirk :S

  • Your kidding right?

The British army didnt have the stimga and there wasnt really any Racism against blacks at that time in history with the British army, Keep in mind there was thousands of black soldiers serving in the British army in WW2 mostly from its overseas territories,

  • There were none at Dunkirk, I can promise you that, it seems they sacrificed the truth for a politically correct lie.

  • And thats rubbish im afraid

You can find photos of the british expeditionary forces in the imperial war museam

And there WERE relative few black soldiers there

  • Judging by your profile name and picture, you will never agree with me so I'm not going to argue with you.

  • I never realised how small he was until I saw him in this scene walking with the officers :O

  • yeaa.. its amazing. but i just wonder how much time it took them to make this scene.

a lot of work i guess.

  • one of my fav scenes too. Tecnically is perfect! And the music matches with the images so well.

  • i cant listen to this without wanting to cry, i love it

  • looove it

  • also, at about 2:20 is someone hanging off the ferris wheel? i noticed it at the cinema and thought it was a bit odd.. lol

  • You're totally correct about the guy hanging off the ferris wheel... Joe Wright mentions this on the DVD director's commentary , and how they had to get some poor stuntman to hang on for the entire scene. Well spotted! :)

  • I was next to the ferris wheel. This scene had 3 takes. it must have killed him.Ask all extras what their disappointment is with the film and they will say the riot scene in the cinema. it was amazing. Joe Wright mentions it when the soldiers sing in the cinema. He also says it was his favourite scene. It didn't even make the deleted scenes. Something tells me there is a director's cut on the horizon.

  • Wow - thanks for sharing, petercushingfan.

From what I've heard, Atonement must have more outtakes and extra scenes than Apocalpyse Now!

I'd love to see the riot scene in the cinema! Please tell us what happened in this scene, petercushingfan!

  • the music is so clever in this scene. the harmonies put with a traditional hymn are genius.

  • cinema at its best

  • this song touches me so bad...there's something i cant express without crying

  • one of my fav scenes

  • R.I.P

This scene makes me cry every time i see it

  • That's what you get when you refuse to get ready soon enough before war : you send troops with mostly outdated armaments and tactics, and you get disasters like Dunkirk.

Respect to all those who have been there, whether they were unhurt, wounded, or dead.

And also for the few ones who have survived that time, and who are still alive nowadays to tell their stories.

    LEST WE FORGET.

  • The film itself was good but not one of my personal favourites. Yet, to me this scene is one of the most moving and one of the greatest scenes in film. I'm not afraid to admit it brought a tear to my eye.

  • YOUR SO WRONG THE BEST SCENE EVER

  • You might be right! But Thin Red Line has a scene that matches it (listen out for journey to the line)

  • yes, one of the greatest

  • we will remember them. when i hear this song i shall think of them and the sacrifice of our heros.

  • There is no word that i can write to express the sadness that come to me when i think of all those young now old men like my grandfathers and also great grand fathers who fought in ww1 and ww2.

They didnt know what they were getting into. Only they know the horrors of war those who have been there. These horrors still effect families now in 2008. my grandad never speaks about somethings in the war. he was a mine clearer at normandy. all he had to use to destroy the mine was a wooden stick.

  • RIP BRITS AT DUNKIRK

  • @rhswlsc , I agree, but why only the Brits ? Many other allies fought in this disastrous battle.

  • @rhswlsc I live where the fishing boats sailed from to rescue the poor lads. It is heartbreaking to know what they were sent to, and the little boats that sailed into hell to rescue them. Thankyou for doing an RIP Dunkirk Brits :)

  • I didnt want to watch this scene because i wanted to savour it for when i got the DVD...I got 15 seconds in before i realised i didnt want to get sick of it on youtube.

  • One of the best scenes in the film, but it was all so good! I was so moved by this film, I've seen the ending around 5 times and I still have tears in my eyes whenever I watch it. This film definitely should have won best picture, it was simply amazing.

  • I completely agree with you

  • All we can think about how these brave British soldiers stood up against the evil, bloodthirsty German dogs. And we can easily forget their comrades, who killed millions of innocent German civilians during the terror-bombings of Germany.

I am kind of sick that only the Americans, British, and the Jews that we MUST feel sorry for.

  • im not sure if that was the message of this scene but okay

  • Umm I think you need to know more about history before making comments like that. Adolf Hitler spare the life of 338,226 men of the British Expeditionary force by ordering the Wehrmacht to stop. When they could have easily over run them, in hope of establishing diplomatic peace with Britain...which never happened...

  • Sorry but your facts are all wrong. Roosevelt asked Winston Churchill to not bomb civilian buildings. But Churchill replied that he wouldn't so long as the Germans wouldn't.Only shortly into the Battle of Britain, that the first nazi bomb stuck London's civilian district. The German civilians were perfectly happy to kick back and watch the fireworks in London, but oh no its a whole another story when the Germans are involved.

  • Terror Bombings!?

    You stupid twat

What the Brits did was DAMN justified

look at what they put up with for two years you swine, The "terror bombings" were the exact tactic they had used on them

  • Such a moving and sad song. Thank god for the strength of humanity in such a evil and cruel time. It makes me think of my grandad who was on the beaches in the d-day landings. Its sad because my grand-father never specks of the war and his stolen time in it. All thous poor young men. I am proud of or elders strength.

  • My great uncle was also there on dunkirk. I wish ?I could've walked with him. Thank you Uncle Robert.

  • Increíble escena, la música es un espejo de lo que se ve y se siente, gran película.

  • It was a successful retreat, who said it was a success? Not sure where that comment came from. Great film

  • It was.

Over 300, 000 Allied soldiers were saved from the Germans.

    A HUGE success.

  • also, can you imagine stumbling upon a beach filled with all that chaos like the three of them did? i think i would have broke down crying

  • yea i think most people had to hold back the tears during this one. i was really mad that this didnt win best picture. i think they could have made an entire movie about Dunkirk, and ive seen an old movie about it but this scene shows how moving a modern depiction of it could be. excellent movie

  • This movie was so moing, and this looks so realistic it's amazing. The music is absolutely gorgeous and this scene had me in tears. This was a fantastic movie. One of the best I have seen in a long time.

  • Only your mum could be content with the three inch dick that conceived you. Only a fat, sad, 40 year old virgin sits on youtube slagging off film scenes with a name like "britbasherno1". You're hilarious, thank goodness that benefits allow you to have internet otherwise the world might be deprived of your genius.

  • When I watched Atonement in the theatre this scene had me biting my lip in a vain attempt to keep back the tears...

  • this scene was gorgeous.

  • totally agree... this scene is amazing =|...its like a mixture of chaos, sadness, a serene peace but yet, not quite and trying to hold on to oneself...well atleast for me....truly a Great scene and great film making.

  • 1:43-mr raine!!!

  • i agree when u say its ur favourite part of the movie :) trully stunning

  • The integration of the hymn the men are singing with the elegy is an emotional piece of genius. The music to the actual hymn, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, is incredibly stirring by itself as is the music to the elegy. But the elegy actually resets the melody to a different harmony which moves the hymn to a different, even more emotional level. Even the clashes between the harmony of the men's singing and the chords of the music contribute to the painting the chaos of the beach in sound.

  • Agreed. It's the music that makes the scene as much as the camerawork.

  • Oh my God this is my favourite movie scene of all time!!!

  • This was a so-so film on the whole, but this scene and the ending alone were worth it.

  • could you upload the part after this where he's in front of the screen with that old movie? that one is sad.

  • that shot at 2:02 of robbie turning is unbelievable. the whole thing just makes you realise how war is such a waste of life. you can just see him slowly fading and its agonising to watch. brilliant. absolutely brilliant film-making.

  • Yeah this was one of the greatest filmed scene in the movie. It really touched me. actually it just made me felt the difficulties and the depressing part of war.

Actually if we hadn't gone to war with Germany, Hitler would have taken all of Europe and exterminate more lives. Well to me this war wasn't a waste of lives, the soldiers didn't die in vain, they fought and died to stop Hitler.

  • And he wouldn't have stopped there. Before the Americans joined in Hitler was already making plans to take America after Europe.

  • 4 bons minuts de cinema

  • The genius of this scene is how it's like looking at a great painting - you re-watch countless times, but pick out small details you missed the previous time - like the mad soldiers on the top of the mast of the ship playing at being Pirates. Cinema genius.

  • the place where this scene was shot is a town in the north east of england called Redcar not far from Middlesborough. I live about 30 minutes from this place and know a few of the extras they used for this film, even saw the sea front being transformed into dunkirk aswell. It was amazing to watch

  • My favourite too. So emotional. And the music is just from Heaven. The most moving track on the most beautiful score of this year... or even ever. This must get an Oscar!! Those soldiers among the crowd... I'm absolutely speechless.

  • So moving. I was blown away with the choir scene. Insane.

  • bloody germans...class film i wondered what all the fuss was about until the last like 20 mins i think

  • I couldn't agree with you more waful!

  • This is my favorite scene, also. The use of this wonderful piece of music combined with the movement of the camera really makes for an emotional and beautiful scene. How Marionelli incorporated the men singing into the music was genius. This soundtrack really deserves the oscar and I hope it wins!
