@LYNCHIE1011 I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but during the real battle it was Cobra gunships that wasted friendlies, not Hueys. I think not only the director at the time couldn't afford to rent an actual Cobra for the scene, but visually seeing an American firing the M-60 into friendly troops just seems more emotional. The scene honestly pissed me off severely seeing this as a kid. I almost never talk to the TV but when I saw this scene man I went at it. lol.

@go0fy11137 I remember my grandfather, once an ARVN officer, told me that a lot of ARVN soldiers get strafed and bombed daily by the USAF aircraft or Cobra helicopters so badly that one of the ARVN soldiers demanding their generals to shoot anything down no matter whether it's the enemy or not as part of self defense. Despite this, a lot of ARVN were very grateful of the USAF close air support and without it, a lot of ARVN would have been killed.

Never had the chance to meet him, but his flag is somewhat of a sacred item we keep in our household. I saw this movie when I was very young, and I remember it making me feel sad even back then. I know in real life it was Cobras that killed the friendlies but having door gunners firing actually makes it more emotional than simply a gunship spraying everything in sight. In this scene however, we clearly see it is Americans killing Americans. We the viewers feel as helpless as the two radio operators that are trying to call off the Hueys. Very sad scene.
