gatherers are the people who failed to get free from the shadow of the orb, basically if you'd give up,die etc. you'd become one of those, and you just encountered the weaker gatherer, a grunt. after the elevator ride most of the gatherers are brutes who can kill ya in 1 hit ^^ I do feel sorry for them though, when you think about it, they're tortured, mutated humans forced to serve the orbs shadow.
