The ONLY thing that would make this attractive (if the fuckers ever actually produced one) is as a "low cost" alternative to an FN Minimi. Not a lot of transferable Minimis in the registry, but there are plenty of RRs, RDIASs, and lightning links.

@chopinbloc the marines are developing this project called the Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) to replace some of their SAWs. the idea of the IAR is so that they can move faster since the SAW is bulky and heavy to move with. go look up the Infantry Automatic Rifle, the marines are testing it now to get it approved. there is a variant of the HK416 to use with some of their SAWs, perhaps using some drum magazines and larger mags. the shrike weighs less than a minimi, and weighing less is good.

@knight6 Yup. Army is looking at a similar concept. The rifle will fire from an open bolt on auto and a closed bolt for semi auto. Neat idea. None of the weapons in question feed from a "clip". The Shrike is vaporware and not a lot lighter than the "para" model of the M249. I get you though. When I first saw this back in like 2003 or so, I thought it was a really neat concept. Since then it's lost a lot of its luster.

@knight6 Doubt it. I haven't heard of any actually being delivered in the near decade since they were introduced. As for reliability, the M4, M16A2/A4, and the SAW are plenty reliable. The only thing the Shrike seems to offer as I see it is the ability to accept 30 round mags without chewing them up the way the SAW does.

It really does appear to be a weapon system that is more suited to offering American civilians a SAW-like weapon at lower cost.
