Vizards have left the soul society. they were all captains or lieutenants at one point, but b/c of an accident with the hougyoku they went through "hollowfication" and became half holows.

I thought Ichigo gained his Hollow abilities when he was stuck in the pit while training to enter the Soul Society. I guess I haven't reached far enough into the series to know...

its still unclear how exacly he became a hollow if your caught up with the japaneese episodes or have read the manga you'll see the current vizards becoming hollows and its different from what ichigo went through inside of that pit
