I feel that Syn is a better LEAD guitar player because he studied jazz and approaches the guitar from a very technical standpoint. Dan on the other hand, I feel is better at rythim playing, all of his riffs are catchy and heavy, I don't really like many of A7X's riffs, and the few that I do were written by Zacky. I'm not saying one is better than the other, that's just my opinion based on what I like and prefer.

i love both these guys and have seen both in concert. I love how a7x harmonizes the guitars and syns arpeggio knowledge and application are inedible. But dans playing is very creative and i love his tone. I do not think syn could "shred circles" around dan however i do think he is overall a faster guitarist. That does not mean better it just means faster. Guitar soloing is not just about speed and if you listen to dans interviews he is very careful about constructing his solos. both are great
it is true that synyster gates riffs very fast, and it can get the people's attention, but he creates a wonderful and attractive solo riffs. But compare to the solos of dan donegan, syn might be faster but,,dan makes a more soulful solos that fits to their song. dan is not about riffing as fast as the best,but riffing more life and passion,,dan is not about only a show to the people but a contributor in the field of music. he makes a good quality of sound and music ,
Disturbed's Dan Donegan is clearly and far more superior than Synyster Gates. Not only does he play soulful and meaningful solos but they are genius in the way he uses arpegios and tapping. I am not saying Synyster is not talented, he definetley is, but i think he is inferior to the skill level of guitar that Dan Donegan has. AVENGED SEVENFOLD SUCKS ASS

First of all, I do think that Dan is WAY better than Syn, but if you think that Syn has no soul then you clearly haven't listened to MIA, Gunsilnger, Seize The Day, Almost Easy etc. he has plenty of soul and can blend it with speed very well. If somebody feels it then there is something there with some exceptions. I also feel much more from Gunslinger and that has much more meaning to it that people can relate to.

hey, about "syn's choppy tapping", dude it is because gates is not a tradicional guitarist, his solos contains rare arpeggios, for example sixth minors chords and diminished triad chords. These ones are not commonly used and they're not precisely known for being "soul", thats why you say it sounds weird but cool!! so obviously, in my point of view, it is a demonstration of an extremely rich musical tecnique.

For example, I'm listening to The Allman Brothers Band right now. They have great technique and Musical Technique, but their music doesn't sound awkward and sounds like it fits in place. If this was a shred contest then neither of these guys win compared to alexi laiho, but since its who is a better guitarist then dan obviously wins, im a big fan of syns playing but dan plays the guitar where as syn can hit guitar notes very very well, any true guitarist can understand that

A7x plays with more speed than disturbed therefore syn is going to play with more speed. There is no doubt that syn could shred circles around donegan (scream, second heartbeat, lost, sidewinder) but syn has also proven he can (and will) play many different styles of music (all of disturbed's songs sound the same).

I actually think they're about even as far as technique is concerned, watch the Vandal video on here and Donegan is ripping well enough to contend with anything Gates does. As far as musicianship I give it to Donegan, he restrains his shredding for the sake of the song where as Gates tries to showcase it, sometimes at the expense of the song in my opinion. Not to mention there's the Dan Donegan orchestra thing, but Gates contributes some to vocals and not badly either. It's Danny for me though!

Donegan fanboys are not welcome here. I admit Dan Donegan does play very well and he might play seemingly soul-filled solos but Syn is the full package. He can play as fast as Herman Li (Afterlife, Beast And The Harlot, Second Heartbeat) but he can play with the passion of Hendricks (M.I.A, Bat Country, The Wicked End). Listen to anything by Dan Donegan and compare it to a solo from Avenged Sevenfold's City of Evil. You'll be very surprised what Syn can do. Both are great but I favour Synyster.

Even though they both solo in different styles, Syn still can out do Donegan. They even came out with that video of Avenged Sevenfold live to show that Synyster 1. doesnt section his solos and 2. rarely messes up. I also think that Syn's solos are better composed with alot of crazy melodies.

I just went back and listened to Disturbed's 'Believe' album . I love the song 'Prayer'..its the best on the album in my opinion..but what isnt opinion and is pure fact is that it all sounds exactly the same. If i didnt know this band and there was no 2 second pause in between songs I would have though it was one 60 minute song..im really not kidding.

Dan puts more emphasis on the soul and feeling of the song's solo rather than the energy and speed of a solo. It's 2 different aspects being judged and observed here.
I adore both bands, but Disturbed is my obsession. One of the reasons is because Dan is so thorough and grasping in his songs. This knowledge and belief has helped develop my own guitar style. He is my inspiration. Syn is also an amazing guitarist, but he relies more on speed than technique. In some respects, that IS his technique, but Dan, to me, seems more dedicated and pure to his creations.

Listen to solos in Almost Easy and Lost by Syn and they have heaps of feel. Especially So Far Away
But the solo's Syn plays/writes with the speed that seems to be against feel here, are to match the songs theyre written to, but he plays fast regardless so I guess the two cancel eachother out, he plays fast cos he feels most comfortable with it.

They are about equal in their own ways. Disturbed and A7X are the greatest bands of all time. Although, Danny is a mastermind that can do the work of 3 or more guitarists as one. Danny has better overall skill. Syn has better skill when it comes to solos, though.
Dan is a better guitar player. He doesnt feel he needs to show off. He does what is better for the song. He is also a good producer and knows how to get the best sound out of his guitar. Syn is great granted and faster but it doesnt grab me as much and I dont give a shit about speed ;)

You guys must be really dump is you think Synyster only got speed and that Dan got more experience. Have you ever heard him or actually plays his music/solo? i love both these guys and have seen both in concert. I love how a7x harmonizes the guitars and syns arpeggio knowledge and application are inedible. But dans playing is very creative and i love his tone. I do not think syn could "shred circles" around dan however i do think he is overall a faster guitarist. That does not mean better it just means faster. Guitar soloing is not just about speed and if you listen to dans interviews he is very careful about constructing his solos. both are great

First of all, I do think that Dan is WAY better than Syn, but if you think that Syn has no soul then you clearly haven't listened to MIA, Gunsilnger, Seize The Day, Almost Easy etc. he has plenty of soul and can blend it with speed very well. This guy picked a TERRIBLE example of Syn's playing. Syn has more technique and speed and he does have soul, but Dan has the more creative mind.

If somebody feels it then there is something there with some exceptions. I also feel much more from Gunslinger and that has much more meaning to it that people can relate to.

hey, about "syn's choppy tapping", dude it is because gates is not a tradicional guitarist, his solos contains rare arpeggios, for example sixth minors chords and diminished triad chords. These ones are not commonly used and they're not precisely known for being "soul", thats why you say it sounds weird but cool!! so obviously, in my point of view, it is a demonstration of an extremely rich musical tecnique.

Syn can't play soulful and meaningful solos/songs? Here we go : Seize the Day, I won't see you tonight pt 1, Tension, So Far Away, Victim, Warmness on the soul, Gunslinger, Dear God. A7x plays with more speed than disturbed therefore syn is going to play with more speed. There is no doubt that syn could shred circles around donegan (scream, second heartbeat, lost, sidewinder) but syn has also proven he can (and will) play many different styles of music (all of disturbed's songs sound the same).

I actually think they're about even as far as technique is concerned, watch the Vandal video on here and Donegan is ripping well enough to contend with anything Gates does. As far as musicianship I give it to Donegan, he restrains his shredding for the sake of the song where as Gates tries to showcase it, sometimes at the expense of the song in my opinion. Not to mention there's the Dan Donegan orchestra thing, but Gates contributes some to vocals and not badly either. It's Danny for me though!

Donegan fanboys are not welcome here. I admit Dan Donegan does play very well and he might play seemingly soul-filled solos but Syn is the full package. He can play as fast as Herman Li (Afterlife, Beast And The Harlot, Second Heartbeat) but he can play with the passion of Hendricks (M.I.A, Bat Country, The Wicked End). Listen to anything by Dan Donegan and compare it to a solo from Avenged Sevenfold's City of Evil. You'll be very surprised what Syn can do. Both are great but I favour Synyster.

I have to say Syn has more money and is more popular, lol..However I would say they are around the same level. Dan doesn't choose to shred, because he wants to keep the songs style. Shredding solos doesn't fit Disturbed's music, therefore, we don't know what Dan is capable of speed wise. Another note, syn has soul. And solos dont mean everything

I just went back and listened to Disturbed's 'Believe' album . I love the song 'Prayer'..its the best on the album in my opinion..but what isnt opinion and is pure fact is that it all sounds exactly the same. I adore both bands, but Disturbed is my obsession. One of the reasons is because Dan is so thorough and grasping in his songs. This knowledge and belief has helped develop my own guitar style. He is my inspiration. Syn is also an amazing guitarist, but he relies more on speed than technique. In some respects, that IS his technique, but Dan, to me, seems more dedicated and pure to his creations.

I like dans playing style more cause its melodic but gates is really fast but anybody can play fast.... in my opinion dan is better because of more soul in his songs.

Just admit it Syn couldn't match the skill that Dan has. Stricken is a masterpiece and what does Syn have Afterlife. Dan Donegan's worst solo on a bad day is still way better than Syn's best solo on a good day. Dan is always trying new varieties to appease his viewers while what does Syn do? Exactly so my point has been proven Dan is just the better guitarist.

@keeptruckin2 Syn is actually a lot better. Syn doesn't just 'shred'.. He has plenty of solos that sound different and have a lot emotion in them you are just ignorant as hell. Now 1, Dan is a better Guitarist, that's a fact OF fact, not because he's more talented, but more experienced. 2 I know Syn does others, they may be the best in the world, I'm sorry I don't know more about them but I have asked users for input. 3 That last part is uncalled for, They are on Hiatus cause of personal choice. @jmt1000 No that isnt fact of fact. Why did synyster gates win the best guitarist at the revolver awards this year and dan didnt? They both released albums about the same time last year..so they both had an equal shot. (And the rev's death has nothing to do with the guitarist winning an award). An Avenged Sevenfold has been touring for 11 years ..next year will be 12. So you cant even say anything about that. A7X has a lot of variety in there music...i mean ALOT.

@keeptruckin2 First off. A7X my favorite band. Syn is better than Dan. He does alot of different stuff that Dan dosn't idk wtf u mean Syn sticks with the same stuff.. He dosn't Finger tap cuz he thinks its sad and takes no skill. and i agree.... Plus the clips are biased. Better quality on Disturbed clips and the live concert of syn was rlly old... when he was first starting out.. Fuck you.

dan is better talent wise but i still prefer syn. he just plays really well, has great solos (not all of them are shred though) seriously syn does more slow, soulful solos than dan. dont get me wrong i idolize them both. but dan has less variation in his.

Listen to solos in Almost Easy and Lost by Syn and they have heaps of feel. Especially So Far Away
But the solo's Syn plays/writes with the speed that seems to be against feel here, are to match the songs theyre written to, but he plays fast regardless so I guess the two cancel eachother out, he plays fast cos he feels most comfortable with it.

@HolySharkBandannas exactly. almost easy and natural born killer both have solos that start out really fast but slow down and sound way more heartfelt in the second half. gunslinger, seize the day, and so far away all show he plays from the heart alot more than dan. but the fact is dan is more skilled. i prefer syn, but dan is the runner up in my top 3. 3rd being mark morton. if syn and dan combined into one person wed all be blown the fuck away XD

They are about equal in their own ways. Disturbed and A7X are the greatest bands of all time. Although, Danny is a mastermind that can do the work of 3 or more guitarists as one. Danny has better overall skill. Syn has better skill when it comes to solos, though.

Dan is a better guitar player. He doesnt feel he needs to show off. He does what is better for the song. He is also a good producer and knows how to get the best sound out of his guitar. Syn is great granted and faster but it doesnt grab me as much and I dont give a shit about speed ;)
