Anthony Warlow!!! Apart from his incredible vocal control, I've yet to see a performer infuse the phantom with as much gothic sophistication and sensitivity as Anthony Warlow. His sense of drama, gestures, timing, restraint are so clear and informed they could be studied in class. It's like watching a Marlon Brando performance - there are no random details, no ambiguity, you can't take your eyes off him for one second or you'll miss something essential. Warlow was the best Phantom... ever.
I've always adored the way Anthony Warlow sings that particular line and compared to all all the others I liked his take on it the best. It's just so sensual.
@Titustails Believe me, they're plenty open. He's the worst Phantom ever along with Ramin Karimloo, Tim Martin Gleason, and Anthony Crivello. About as entertaining as cardboard. Way, way, way too slow. However, it's not quite as bad as the first verse.
My favorites are: Michael Crawford, Hugh Panaro, Ramin Karimloo, JOJ, Howard McGillin, Earl Carpenter, Colm Wilkinson, Anthony Warlow, Brad Little, and John Cudia in no particular order! ;)
They all bring something special, making it hard to chose!
Anthony Warlow is my favourite by far, but I also like John Cudia, Brad Little and Michael Crawford. Ramin sounds way too much like a Raoul to me, but he's so damn hot so it's okay.
Anthony Warlow is the greatest Phantom. Not only is his voice miraculous, but his movements, gestures and stage presence are unbeatable. Watch the little thing he does with his fingers at 1:35, and the way he extends his hands to Christine at 1:48. So powerful, sensual and magnetic. He had the perfect mixture of power and vulnerability in the Phantom's character.
Mine has to be Ramin, but there are a couple other I like, particularly Howard, especially as he was the Phantom I saw on Broadway and loved him in the role! (:
Panaro and McGillin in my opinion were the best. I loved Panaro's strong voice. To me, the Phantom's voice should be more dominant and forceful than Christine's and I feel they did that.
sometimes i wonder how colm wilkinson landed the part...i know he performed at Sydmonton, but Andrew said, "Yeah, we usually had stars we weren't expecting to ever perform...Colm was a rare case." : )
Crawford is Crawford... I don't think it's quite possible to include him in these comparisons, as he will always be the original Phantom.
Pleasantly surprised by Brad Little, and loved how he flicked his cape before helping Christine out of the boat. Panaro is good, but a little too 'clean' for my taste. I love most things that Carpenter does, but I think he's a little out of his depth when it comes to Phantom. For me, the winner has to be JOJ, but Cudia sounded good too.
@MarineForceAlpha aw thats okay then cos if I was to say JOJ was a beast, it would clearly mean I'd like to rub myself up and down him while he sang to me for definate! Simple as. LOL. No, in all honestly, I love the man to pieces. He's just gorgeous. <3
@keeny2006 haha i think voice is amazinggg my favorite phantom, i gotta admire him lol. makes me sad sometimes to be a bass baritone :P ... ramin is a honorable mention too... and juan carlos point of no return is cool too :)
Honestly i think on this Crawford is the best. But when your in the theatre there all kick-ass 'cause the journey sequence is amazing. thumbs up if you agree.
out of all of them, i definetily have to say, Crawfrod and Sarah. the best. but i have to say, since i saw it on broadway with Hugh Panaro, he is my second favorite
i HATE Colm Wilkinson >.< his voice makes me nauseous. Sarah/ Michael and Ramin/Sierra :D ohhh and Gary/Beth
