  • You played it right, but your description is wrong. These are 16th notes, not 32nd notes. The tempo around 160 bpm and you are playing 4 hits per beat, which makes 16 beats per measure, hence, 16th notes.

  • @drummerjmp Good point. I was notating it wrong. 32nds in 7/4 @ 80 bpm is how I feel it but not how it should be written. I will correct that.

  • Ever heard of tuning

  • @motopilot322 Yeah man my friend has a sick eclipse. Turbos FTW!

  • @johndoe1027 hmm..well..

  • Are you sure he stops the 32nd notes at 1:07? I keep listening to the recording and it seems that the 32nd notes stay constant. I'm not entirely sure though.

  • @gcharocks I haven't listened closely in awhile but never could tell completely. There is that one handheld live vid of him playing it floating around. I used that as much or more than the recording to learn it.

  • Its not a weird kit ya fuckwits its called a remote hihat which gives you more flexibility over the kit and room for stuff like left hand toms

  • Dude... you are a fucking epic beast.

  • Having said that...good job.

  • One thing to almost copy something it's another to actually write the material first.

  • Great cover. With a great flow you play. (Yeah I just did a yoda thing.) Seriously though, wish you had more vids up.

  • @aggresivepassivist Thank you. I wish I had time to do more vids. I will do more someday I promise.

  • Danny Carey just turned 50 and he can play this song all the way through. Nonetheless, he is a God's dream within a dream within an etc.

  • @deofavente117 Danny also made it past page 3 of The New Breed.... I haven't yet and I bought it in 2000.

  • that drumset is weird as fuck

  • Your drum kit confuses me

  • @AfterlifeBlack It's just setup like marching tenors on the toms and everything else is basically symmetrical.

  • @johndoe1027 i played Quads in high school and I love your set up dude, very unique.

  • yeaaaaaaaaaah sounds good.....=)

  • I think Tbartels is amazing , his covers are perfect.

This is stupid to say stuff like he is not feeling the song or some other stuff that said...

  • 4 REAL?

  • I dunno, tbartels does a great job of the first half of the first half, if you see what i mean, and a great job of the entire second half. I thought. Plus in his defence I think his top hihat came loose during the first half.

This is a great help on the intro though and you look amazingly relaxed with it! :)

  • awesome!

  • u have it more accurate than tbartels

  • You're missing 50 percent of the notes. Watch how Danny Carey plays it, this is an extremely simplified version of the song.

  • Missing the hi-hat in the intro...

  • @squiresuzuki It's just quiet.

  • @johndoe1027 That's right buddy... Cause if you watch carefully, you 'll see the hi-hat opening and closing ;)

  • @squiresuzuki no he's not haha watch his leg

  • @squiresuzuki no he's not

  • @squiresuzuki no one gives two shits

  • are you hitting in `single beats for each or are you keeping a rhythm while accenting certain notes

  • @mattman9656 Not playing straight sixteenths w accents. Some accented notes and some quiet ones. See the notes for a tab.

  • check out tbartelsoo7

  • wicked! good job dude, keep at it!

  • Nice job man, you had a much better feel than most on youtube. I dig your set btw.

  • @TheGogo9er :-) I miss that setup. Going to start building it again this weekend if I can find time.

  • @johndoe1027 What did you find that setup would benefit you and what ease did you lose? I have been trying to find a setup like that that would also be comfortable. I remember seeing vids of Rikki Rocket and how all his toms were flat and saying "YEAH! That's how I want to setup!"

  • @TheJarnut I played tenors in marching band so toms alternating on either side makes sense. There are a few drawbacks but they are minimal compared to the comfort from squaring your shoulders to the centerline of your kit.

  • Nice intro bro this is a very complex song to play u did great thumbs up.

  • Very awesome and relaxed style, it sounds tight, man! Very controlled, verreh well done.

  • lol don't listen to these trolls telling you "you're wrong....i appreciate your concept thoguh" "you did this, that wrong" man, what these simple minded drummers; as good as they may be to criticize you without any videos of their own; fail to see is that drumming has and always will be improvisational, and this is pure talent right here. fkn sexcellent man! i've seen danny play many times, and guess what! improv. ALOT. ofcourse the album is going to sound as they always hear it. douche sacks.

  • @nanasbuschparty Don't know what to say... Thanks!

  • @johndoe1027 btw, your toms sound pretty much tuned to a fucking "T"...more props for that. fuck yes.

  • @nanasbuschparty yea i always hate when people ask can u play this on drums? rarely does the drummer who made the part play it the same every time

  • Dudes, this is one of the hardest songs to play of all time, so what if he didn't quite diliver it like cary, he did his best and did a great job

  • @bakeacake9 Thanks man. I tried. You know YT, nothing's ever good enough and someone else always does it better.

  • thanks broseph!

  • from 1:07 - 1:18 you are playing it wrong. you just repeat the pattern you played in the beginning only this with the double bass. i respect your concept though.

  • That was real good man, nice job.

  • Very nice I agree with bulldog 1:07 is a little different for me as well but overall well done

  • 1:07 in, I play ENTIRELY differently. Not sure if those are the right tabs and I am just wrong, but I play it much differently.

also, have you played the ending? That is the really insane part.

    Good intro though,

  • I can't get through the whole tune much less the end. :-/ I'm pretty sure that the tab is at least pretty close.

  • @johndoe1027 I mean it sounds right, I just played it different I guess... more than one way to make it sound like it I guess.

and yes, this song is one hell of a workout hahaha

  • @Bulldog22031 ive seen this played a lot differently as well. but it makes the same sound so it works either way i guess...?

  • dude wow you totally nailed this intro GOOD SHIT keep the fuckin good work

  • a little sloppy on the high hat and the tom part is a little off

  • @JTRdrum off in what way? CONSTRUCTIVE criticism appreciated.

  • @johndoe1027

Your missing half of the ghost notes on the snare during the shuffle part and when the double bass kicks in at the end of the tribal part there are no flams and the accents follow the original pattern and the crashes should be on a china. You are also missing some snare hits during the tribal part.

  • first off this guy did very well on this intro.second no hes not danney carey no one can play it like him because danney wrote the drum riff..so good job on the cover.

  • That Tbartels guy is good but he plays so fucking rigid, he doesnt feel the song at all

  • NIENE

  • @declan1212 Well thats Tbartels style.. and look at how this guys drums are all lower than his waist. Tbartel has to have his arms raised which increases the amount of power needed.

  • @declan1212

maybe because he's playing it properly? this guy is missing half the toms.

  • hahahah

  • thats good but tbartels007 is better. just sayin

  • so's your mom

  • i love the ppl that say tbartels is great and all. he is a good drummer, covers good songs, but seems like the songs are "running away from him" you play this song with the rudiment feel, and stay relaxed with it, it's a very fun intro to play

  • Haha that's a good way to explain it. He can play more than I can but I try to look and feel comfy when I play.

  • @themadtapper they're both great, but I like Tbartels007 better because it gives an energetic feeling to the songs. But then, like everyone should know, it's not my right to criticsize because every drummer has their own style to play in.

  • @themadtapper Well thats Tbartels style.. and look at how this guys drums are all lower than his waist. Tbartel has to have his arms raised which increases the amount of power needed.

  • @themadtapper Ha ha ha i was thinking the same thing of that dude. i like how he disables his comments so i cant talk crap on him, i think he loves himself, and needs to practice on having the drums become more natural to him, or find a new hobby because not everyone can just play the drums smoothly

  • @maximaman380 i'm not gonna knock him b/c any drummer that can go through a tool song deserves the credit and he does a decent job on the covers. he even says that he doesn't play them exactly and i too when playing will put a little of my own flavor on a fill but i think he gets way more hype when playing "cheater" as i call it. like "the pot" covers where no one does the triplets on the hi hat, or the doubles on the bass that you can barely hear

  • @themadtapper Tbartels seems stressed whenever he plays, his kit is really muffled and I sent him a mail asking for advice and never received a mail back.

  • actually this version is more accurate. just sayin

  • sorry... i think this guy's better..

  • holy crap dude that is amazing!!!!

  • Don't get me wrong this guys plays it well, but is it just me - or does the intro not quite match the song?

  • fake

  • Definitely....

    ?

  • hes right, im agree, but i think this guy play the basic pattern perfect , i saw a lot of videos and im only convinced with this, nice job dude

    sorry for my english xD

  • would those be tama superstars i see?

  • Yep, wanna buy em? They rule.

  • lol no thanks, though they do sound nice, theyre what i play, \m/

  • he played it right, the hand pattern does change when the double bass is added....listen to the song in headphones

  • Damn, you're the first to say that. I thought it was that way and everyone here convinced me otherwise. IIRC you can't see his hands on the live YT version which is the only way to know for sure unless he tells us. :-)

  • Your oppinion!

I listen to the song almost every day (sometimes with headphones) and the hand pattern in the end is not the stuff Carey plays.

  • your just sad that your not as good as him

  • lmao i dont see you playin it, yet ur critisizing? wtf learn it urself before u tell someone else how to play it dude lol

  • cheers mate, helped me heaps

  • you are really good

  • which notes are the kicks on?

  • 1(234567)+

  • thanks for adding the ghost note in the verse groove. A lot of people forget that.

  • fuck yeah, awesome intro to a song :)

  • Almost flawless :)

  • fuck. you make this look easy dude xD 5/5

  • are you sure your not careys kickass son are something fuck hard

  • Thanks so much for tabbing this bitch XD im well om my way to learning it but heck! I love your cymbals to

  • not as good as the original (obviously) but this is a very good cover

  • holy shit i thought danny carey was the only human being capable of doing this but you proved me wrong! (:

  • LOL. The difference being he can play the whole song. Maybe not all in one shot perfectly but he can get through it at least. My arms and legs would fall off about 5 min in.

  • Uh, yeah, he can play through the entire song perfectly in one shot. DC is a machine.

  • Lol yea.. Carey is like twice the size of an average human being :P

  • kickass

  • sounds exactly like the track. omg!!

  • HOLY FUCKING SHIT

  • damn dude, is all i have say...damn

  • I have to admit, I checked this out with 'fail' in mind... I apologize. Nicely done! You're a qualified drummer.

  • Word.

    Thank you. :-)

  • kick ass man, fuck yeahhh

  • I don't like alot of drummer's attempts at Tool songs here i'll admit.

But this isn't bad man, pleasantly surprised!

    GJ

  • Thanks GJ.

  • Awesome man!

  • Splendid job. How long did it take you to get this down?

  • Thanks man. I learned it three different ways so it took forever but I wasn't working on it every day either. It would take a couple days to get it one way then a few more to get comfy doing it that way. But each new time took a little longer since I was used to something else.

Lol. I should have a graph or some shit.

  • Good shit dude. props,

  • shut up pussys who keep dissing this video with your " ok but you could've worked on blah blah blah" even though you can't do shit compared tto this, perfect job dude and thanks for charting it.

  • Best comment I've received. Thanks a lot and you're welcome.

  • dont listen to the asswipes who are dissin on this video, that was beautiful. all i wish was that it went on for the whole song. u nailed it dude

  • Thanks a lot man. If I could play the whole tune I would but I don't think I could own it so I haven't even really tried.

  • Do you think you could make a video to teach how the fuck it is you play the intro?

  • Dont be hatin'. He nailed it, you guys are just trying to find mistakes because you cant do any better.

  • wish i could play it half as well.not sure about a few snare hits but hay ..keep up the good work

  • Pretty good man. However, tbartels007's version sounds more in sync.

  • is this fo real faggot?

  • Nicley done. Tabs are for sissies though.

  • I agree in a way (I learn a lot better by ear) but there have a been a few things that I learned quicker from tabs (sheet music in my case, technically) because someone else spent the time to listen over and over and over to hear that one ghost note or whatever. Plus I actually like transcribing beats.

    And thanks. :)

  • Fair enough.

  • dude this was nice, noone can make fun of u for studying danney cause hes awesome, Danny carey, Neil peart, Joey jordison are some of the best drummers

  • You got two correct but Jordison is overrated big time.

  • nicely done. I must say the best cover of this song was probably done by Machine Gun Smith. I think he removed the video though.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for showing how the opening is actually played. This tbartels007 jackass whom I see many people worshipping is a terrible drummer and isn't even playing the song correctly. I wish I could comment on his video but the puss disabled comments... If he's been playing for 30 years, then I'm Danny Carey's son...

  • tbartels is a VERY good drummer.

That said I think my way is more "correct" than any I've seen so far. Then again I haven't done as many vids as a lot of drummers out there. I'm a dork for studying Danny SO closely.

I REALLY appreciate the compliments orly and you're welcome too. :-)

And I can totally see why he'd disable comments. People on YT always find something to whine about. Solelylost knows what I'm talking about.

  • VERY good? Come on. Judging by your playing you must know better. He's stiff, bounces around, has poor technique, and poor groove.

  • He is very good. He and I don't focus on the same things but that doesn't mean he's not good. His style may not be my favorite but he's still a monster in his own right.

  • Yeah... I have to agree. I think Tbartels doesn't do near the job he should. AND his kit sounds like shit.

  • If I was a fag I'd make your ass bleed for days. Bitch.

Tbartels is a very good drummer.

  • ooohh, sounds like fun. And yea, he is a great drummer. You are hard shit bro

  • Well done my friend. You and tbartels007 are the only two guys I've seen play that intro with some confidence, and accuracy.

    Keep up the great work.

  • LONG LIVE TOOL!!!!!

  • I wish you'd have done the whole song! you were doing so well!! danny carey is fucking amazing and anyone who can mimic him is obviously very talented. TOOL rules and I think they are underrated as a band, either it be because people cant grasp the complexity or just arent into the music. my friends who know music theory well enjoy and respect tool but my other friends think its just another NU metal band. but fuck them what do they know.

  • word

  • I love the way your drums are set up.

  • amazing

  • yikes man. not half bad at all. I'm no drummer but I can tell the difference between a mere challenge and outrageously difficult. All that talk about ghost notes and whatnot is a bit over my head. Good effing job.

  • You lack spirit.

  • fail. u forgot the cocky hi-at splash :35 lol. just kiddin man. i cant get enough of this damn video or broken man by RAGE

  • Damn you. Lol. I always heard that as a "improvisation" on Danny's part. What I mean by that is that he didn't mean to do it on the album. It sounds like he's putting his foot on the HH pedal to prep for the chicks and does a foot slosh by accident. Dunno. Never even tried to play it, that's for sure.

    Thanks again lismore. :-)

  • no prob man. even if it is improv, it adds so much to that change when the guitar kicks in. keep the good stuff comin.

  • I'm sorry. I'm an idiot. Can't even read my own tab, how bad is that? I play solid 32nds on the hands, accenting the r's and l's. Capital R's are snare accents.

It is so hard to describe playing an instrument in text. Grrrr. Now back to setting the studio back up so I can make a lesson vid for this.

  • Thanks a lot.

I guess I was putting in left handed ghost notes at this time? The tab is how I play it now and I couldn't tell you for definite positive sure how the hell Danny plays it.

  • Fuckkk god job man !!!

  • where is the rest of the song? its an awesome job though!!!

  • I don't think I can play the whole song. I would drive myself f'ing crazy trying to get it perfect all in one take. Hell even splitting it and taking from two vids would still end me up mumbling in the corner in the fetal position. I'll give it a try once I get a big kit set back up though.

  • I dont understand your "Tab". What hands are playing in the spaces that have no letter under them. I would assume it would be the last hand labled but that would mean it is completely different from how your are playing it here

  • there are rests... I think. The way I play it is with nothing played where there are no letters. the small o's are just for keeping your place basically. Some people play every sixteenth note but if that's the way it's done then where I do rests would be ghost notes. Then you'd have three dynamic levels to deal with instead of two and more notes.

  • you got too excited and almost missed turning your snare back on lmao. grats on the great cover

  • Pretty much. Good eye. Once I got that break I was like "wait, was that almost right?!?!?!"

  • yeah but u nailed it. u must feel like a badass playing this song, i know i would lol its aggresive

  • you should do some led zeppelin covers nobody does those. I bet you could play them pretty well

  • Not a bad idea. Thanks.

  • tbartels007 makes this video look like an epic fail drum cover of ticks and leeches

  • That because he's a better drummer than me. :-)

As I was watching it (again) I was thinking "I could get that close" until the tom solo deal toward the end. Then I was thinking "No damn way". haha

  • lmao in this case i think the worst parts to play ( in order of difficult) are the drum and the bass . i mean about tool :D ....

  • not bad. You almost got it down except your still a little bit too slow. Your hittin everything right its just tool has crazy time signatures that its fuckin crazy. I'm a bassist myself and justin chancellor makes it as complecated. atleast i can play Schism

  • ha yeah when i play tool songs i dont even count them, i dont even think about the timing signature, when learning a tool song i work out what and where the accents
