When reading a Sci-Fi story, the reader is outside the character he is reading about. So when that fictional charactor transfers his consciousness through whatever means (cloning, digital upload, teleportation, simlulation etc) to something else. The effect seems continuous to the reader. The person experiencing the transfer might get this continuous transfer. He might have died from his own standpoint. If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck it might be a duck doppleganger.

The person experiencing this effect might NOT have continuity. He might be an entirely different person. The old original person might just be dead.
