One of my favorite John Denver songs, and it brings tears to the eyes even now so long he's been gone from us. I think I should start singing it again.
Heard a teen say in WalMart the other day:"it won't be long and there won't be anything but electronic music". What a dope! He's never heard the likes of John Denver, Don Mcclain, or Gordon Lightfoot. Music comes from the heart of the hearer or the musician. Electronic music is GREAT, but its certainly NOT all there is! I hear music when I'm all alone in the peace and quiet of my bedroom or when I'm driving with the stereo blasting! Thanks for posting this great song by a legend!
Wonderful song sung so beautifully. John's ability to write such meaningful songs and perform them so well continues to effect people all over the world. Thanks for posting.
I saw John in Toronto in the 70'd..He was amazing and so funny. He talked with the audience as if we were long lost friends.. I had his double album an evening with...that was one of his best concerts..
I have always loved John Denver. His legacy will live on in the hearts of loving people. I also learned to play guitar when I was very young. Peter,Paul and Mary and John Denver were my inspiration. I always wished I could have met John in person. This might sound hoaky but I have dreams that he is with me in my own house and we are best friends playing and singing songs together. He had a beautiful mind. I don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to at least one of his songs. Thnx JD.
Great song, he closed just about every concert I ever saw with this one... Always so personal - just him, his guitar and the audience.. He was truly a song's best friend.
For my husband I lost three years ago....when I was 14 he used to sing and play for me I wish he would have learned this song...I just rediscovered...xo
I taught myself to play the guitar at 15 yrs. old. I listened to and loved the recordings of John Denver, Jim Croce and Harry Chapin, and learned to play them to the best of my ability. When I lost all three of these talented artists, I stopped playing music and writing poetry for a long time. I not only miss John's songs but what he would have written had he not left us so soon. Thanks for posting this video, one of my favourites of his.
When I was tiny my mom would sing his songs to me, and then when I first learned how to sing it was by singing along to his songs. I still have most of them memorized and I know that when my husband and I have children I'll be singing these songs to them.
Like cajoshua 3080 I'm old as dirt as well ( love that ) but I'm not sure I would be here but for if songs like this got me through some realy bad times. Thank you John R.I.P.
I'm old as dirt so was in my 20s when John played sold-out shows @ The LA Forum. I thank God I was able to be at one of those concerts which he did in the 'round so everyone in that immense arena could see and hear every note and every word he sang. There will never be another John Denver~You're singing with the Angels now....Rest in Peace.
The only songs I have ever really learned to play on the guitar are John's. And this is the one I love listening to and playing more than any other. If he were still around I would still be going to his concerts. A true entertainer.
I always loved John Denver &his wonderful music -was so impressed with him when he played a concert in Baton Rouge while I was attending LSU. He gave the band a break but he STAYED on stage &kept on playing alone-this was the first song he sang. He really loved performing for his fans. I saw him in concert twice & believe it was THIS time during his concert that USA beat Russia in Winter Olympics & we heard the news from John - he was so excited to announce it and the arena went wild!
TOTAL PERFECTION !!! When life gets heavy, I always have to listen to the story where he lost the guitar that his grandma gave him, then later gets it back. :-) pretty good stuff.
I also grew up listening to the music of John Denver. When the world gets a bit "frustrating"....I listen to this song and my stress melts away. Thank you John for your immense talent. You are sorely missed.
Love this song. The words ring true and John Denver was a wonderful performer and song writer. You're right, John, pick up that guitar and play. You'll never have another lonely night! (Myself, am an elderly grandmother and guitar player.) LS
Annie's Song's hard to beat but this one's great too and such a nice accustic soft song. When it comes to america's greatest Singers that actually wrote most of their own music then you have Hank Williams and John Denver. Music is so artificial and boring today without true artists like Denver around. Thanks for the memories but most of all the awsome folk colection you left us to cherish the rest of our lives.
this is one of my favorite John Denver songs. Like many of you have already said, its just pure and honest. Ive been a Jonh Denver fan my entire life, one song i just cant get enough of is "round and round" i want it played at my funeral. Its sad what the kids of today listen to when you compare it to a real musician like John. My kids know John because thats what i listen to on our long vacations. I hope in their older years they"ll appreciate him as we have. RIP John.
John Denver sings with conviction about subjects that were near and dear to him. At first a lot of people scoffed at his musical themes-"What's all this about the mountains" and so forth and though it wasn't really "cool" at the beginning, the crowds soon started filling the hiking trails, camping etc. Focus on our beautiful & fragile wildlife finally began to occur and the need to take care ot it. Great thanks to JD for his artistry & meaningful contribution.
@gczwarkiel So true, I completely agree with you. People often just want to abstract themselves from the reality: our feelings and emotions, the nature that surrounds us (that we are destroying everyday). John Denver made a point in singing about all these relevant issues. :)
3 people are wanting to opens their hearts but are afraid. That's ok. This song will play forever just like his old guitar that went with him. May he rest in peace forever X
John, because of you I learned to play guitar, and my young, sad, heart was soothed... Idid the est training and moved to San Francisco from Chicago to work with Werner. We met several times after that John, and I met you again during a down time for you. I shared the mystic law of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo and chanted for you...and chanted for you...and when you died, I was mystically right there at the rocks in Pacific Grove, with my guitar...and I had the honor of singing for you.
John, I always cry when I hear this song more than any other. You were my first concert when I was ten and now that I'm much older still the best. You got me thru some rough times and made me enjoy happy times that much more. When I go to the mountains I always think of you. I was brought up with your music so thank you for the beautiful voice, musicianship, talent and being a beautiful sou. I will always fight for conservation in your name.
@denverrosemorse Great comments. I too was helped so much by Johns music. I am older,it got me thru raising 5 kids in the 70s,my hubby and i loved his music, nothing like his music,it touches your heart.
@denverrosemorse . . .Are you my sister in another life time? John was my first album,my first concert and is still the singer I want to listen to , on good days and bad days. I'm so happy to see these old clips from the BBC, as I didn't get to see them when I was young. Keep listening my dear. . . .we have very good taste in music.. . .John is a legend !!
I love reading all these wonderful post about people's joy over John's music. While my friends back in 70s were listening to disco and rock, I was listening to John. I am a big fan of his music, his legacy entralls us all. Miss you John. Wish you were here.
John's music moved me to learn the guitar back in 1971 while a Freshman in HS - now 40 years later I can not thank him for the joy he has brought me all these years!
This song truly says it all! But - HE gave ME my guitar - so THANKS John we all know you are still singing and playing just with a much bigger audience!
Whenever John played, felt i always had a rapport with him, just got pulled into his love of life and nature, will cherish his music and miss him forever.
John Denver was the best. His words - transcendent. His Voice and Words always touch me, remind me, center me, humble me, and heal me....Thank you John....
The 1970's wasJohn Denver. The first concert I ever went to was one he gave in 1976 when I was 15 in Murfreesboro, TN. I still love his music and am so sorry he died so young. There is no one making music that can come close to this nowadays. There surely must of been many songs we never got to hear. Rest in peace John, xoxoxoxo
always loved his music and the meaningful lyrics which helped turn my life around years ago. Now I find I,m listening to them all over again and still feel so emotional about them. His death was an absolute tragedy like the great Jim Reeves. What a loss they both were . All we seem to have now is freaks like Lady Ga Ga etc.
its sad to think that music this pure doesn't exist at all anymore on the radio. there's something about just a voice and a guitar that has a quality that you can never package with synthetic sounds and auto-tune vocals.
A genius who left the most wonderful legacy for us all to enjoy. What an amazing man. RIP John, your music touched so many people and helped so many others through such difficult and tumultous times. You will never be forgotten.
thank you so much bctguy for posting such wonderful videos of the most wonderful performer in the history of music. I am still waiting for a full remaster of the 1975 christmas special. rocky mountain christmas.
listen to his song gospel changes.john d saved my life that night god bless him and may he have a check mark in his book of life.he IS missed and thank u bctv guy 4 all your postings
so simple a sentiment, but said from the heart you feel. How clear is his vioce? Sang live with just a guitar...his old guitar...there could ever only be one JD and he was taken from us far too soon.
They play a recording of John singing this song at a tribute concert each year in Aspen, CO. Most of the night, other artists sing his songs. Then the lights go out and a lone guitar on stage is shown in a spotlight. John himself sings this song. Not a dry eye in the house!
John is a performer I saw in Dallas back in the 80's. As I reflect bact on that concert it difficult to accept the lost of a "National Treasure". Here it is sept 11, 2010.
I am still brought to tears when I listen. Many of his songs touched my heart and soul. God Bless John may the world not morn you loss, be be glad we were able to share the short time we had to experience your love for everyone.
Another soundtrack of my teen years in the 70s- John always brought solace to my soul and joy to my ears- I did tear up when he flew away- he blessed us for sure
If I am having a bad day or feeling really sad or down, I watch this video and it helps me feel better. Thanks to bctvguy for getting this on youtube. I do not have the vocabulary or "talent" to express my feelings that come over me when I hear this song and watch him as well. His story is also sad but he did bring many great songs to our world and we can always enjoy them forever and forever. Thanks John for sharing with us your great talent. I miss you.
Thank you for sharing this song, it is one of my favorites by John Denver. I played it for a friend of mine some years ago. She had been a professional country western singer back in the 50's. When she heard it, tears came to her eyes. She understood just what a friend her guitar had been to her. May God bless John Denver and may he rest in peace. Thanks again for sharing it.
If I could listen to one melodic voice for the rest of my life I would pick John Denver. His songs calm my soul, refreshes my spirit, and lays waste to my fears of the day. I pray with all my heart that his remarkable gift of poetry thru song, lives on for eternity. RIP
@DEK1954 I do listen to John Denver everyday, on my car radio or on my ipod, or watch him on my video player, I've been listening to no one else but John Devner for over 4 years...starting the night my father died. I freaked out and John Denver's music is the only thing that settled my soul and calmed my spirit.
I never had the opportunity to listen to a live performance from the great John Denver. But listening to it's recorded material, it completely captured my attention (and devotion). Most beautiful music I have ever heard in my life with real meaning to myself and to anyone in the world. Although based in much of his personal life, his work can be reflected in the lives of so many. And that says it all about his human and artistic quality.
I had the privilege of seeing him live on his first tour of Australia - He had THE most beautiful voice I have ever heard - for some reason, even his best recordings didn't quite capture it properly IMHO (I'd be interested to know if other JD fans who saw him live agree). A truly rare talent, John will live in our hearts forever.
Absolutely I agree! I was fortunate to see this man perform live in the Rockie mountains in Utah with the utah symphony and all I can tell you is that he sounded amazing. He never sung a note off key and it was like listening to perfection, like a studio vocal perfomance except it was BIGGER and that was from sitting in the very back on the hillside!
John had a resonance in his voice that was absolutely perfect. He was born to sing and he did it so well. His modest manner and sincere face combined with the voice to produce something exceptional and unique. I will never forget seeing JD live 3 times.
This is truly his signature song. I can sit for hours and listen to his music while working. I always closeout with this one. It's only fitting the were creamated together.
I grew up in Colorado listening to John Denver sing about our state and it's beauty. He was and is a treasure that will forever be missed. I got to hear him sing once in person when he was giving a private performance at a hotel I was working at. I was working as a maid, upstairs from where he was performing. I remember leaving all the windows open to the room I was working in just so I could see and hear him. I will never forget it. I love his music
john I miss you you gave me my start.sorry about breaking the strings on your guild 12 just had to tune it up when it came of the plane.anyway our lives are have followed the heart.and yes my guitar playing is getting awsome thanks to you sir.....chris
This song just brings me to tears. I miss him so much. I grew up listening to John and I thought we would grow old together. There has never been an artist who touched me with their music the way John Denver did. He died too, too soon.
Im french canadian and at an early age I discovered this guys enchanting singning, the powerfull truth and beauty in each of is songs. Three songs have a major philosophycal impact on me; « Annies Song » for defining love, « Sunshine On My Shoulders » for defining beauty, and « Rhyms And Reasons » for defining hope.
I've been a John Denver fan since birth, thanks to my dad, and I still cry when I hear some of his songs. This is one of them. What a wonderful talent.
I have a quick story. You know how some people say animals can see angels? well about 15 min ago. I was playing this song on guitar. and my cat started looking at air. looking all around the room. I knew John Denver was righ there. helping me play. Me and my Dad re big fans of him. I know somewhere up there. hes watching me. and all of you who love him.
Superb!!! : ) THAT'S how to play guitar. None of this guitar Hero stuff that's killing the art... I don't believe in it and I think it's degrading. It is sooo much better to play and be taught the organic way.
R.I.P. John you are truly missed, not only for the beautiful music you created, but also for the beautiful person you were and what you stood for. I thank God for sharing you with us and hope He is enjoying you.
@Choefoe I have that 5 disk DVD set and it's terrific. There is also a new CD out that is great, its from a Cedar Rapids Concert in 1987, he did a lot of talking in it that was also produced, it is very interesting.
Such a peacefulness in his voice. There will never be anyone that can come close to him, his talent and his love for the earth... I love you John Denver...
I would give anything to have met John. I have loved his music since I was a kid. He has inspired so many people through his music. That is when music was music....
I met John Denver in 1978 back stage at his concert in Ft Worth. He told me "This Old Guitar" was his favorite song. I got to sit down and play a song with him in his dressing room. It was a day I will never forget! What an incredible musician!
JOHN YOUR THE MAN we miss you here on earth but i still feel you man so you really never left us thanks for being a part of my life since i can remember
All of John's songs are special, I cannot pick out a favourite, it is too difficult as I love them all. Heaven has a really bright star in it now, a very special and unique one.
Been a fully signed up fan since about 86 when I went to 6 concerts here in UK....am 50 now been trying to sing/play on & off since then!....if i get good enough gonna post a vid on here....happy listening everybody...
Makes me cry...I was only 17 when he died, but I knew the impact he had. I cried when he died. I still cry when I hear this. John's music has helped me become a better man. I am 30 now. I still miss his influence. Yet. I try to carry on his campaign for conservation. I never had a father who taught me right from wrong. Listening to John's music....He was like the father I never had. I turned out a better person...No...I turned ot a better MAN because of it....Love you John...Always......
How uplifting to hear this. But my friedn, you are not the only one. I am 58 and my formative years were filled with songs of John Denver and a host of others like Don Willaims but also rokcers like Rolling stones.
@SamUnfiltered2010 Nice comments SamUnfiltered, there are a lot of us out here who feel same way about this great talent & humanitarian, the one & only JD !!!! Fly high John, we love you !!!
@SamUnfiltered2010 I felt the same way when I was growing up at 14. He helped me through my teen years... I am now 50 and I love him still....When word came about his passing I had friends calling to see if I was ok...they knew how much I loved him..his music made it easier for a lott of us!..
@SamUnfiltered2010 ...love john denver..still makes my cry when i here this version..saw him live in glasgow many times..miss him loads..52 year old denver fan ..always was and always will be a great fan......
@SamUnfiltered2010 just want to say what a lovely comment and tribute to JD..you have written,I feel much the same way,i was one of his biggest fans and had bought all his LPs or tapes,I still have a job to believe he's gone.maybe i'm just a sentimental ole fool, but some of his songs its just impossible not to shed a tear, and this song is one of them.'don't close your eyes tonight'is another.i hope his message of caring for our enviroment is taken up by his many fans.cheers.dwm.
@bctvguy i agree it does his grandmother gave him a guitar on his 12th birthday or which I think he still had when he died, he was amazing R.I.P. John you are and will always be remembered and missed xox
One of my favorite John Denver songs, and it brings tears to the eyes even now so long he's been gone from us. I think I should start singing it again.

His death was so unfair on all of us, but him most of all. WE certainly have missed out on some songs that I am sure he would have gone on to write.
Thanks John for what you gave all of us.

All we seem to have now is freaks like Lady Ga Ga etc.
grahamleather11 1 year ago
its sad to think that music this pure doesn't exist at all anymore on the radio. there's something about just a voice and a guitar that has a quality that you can never package with synthetic sounds and auto-tune vocals.

so simple a sentiment, but said from the heart you feel.

And that says it all about his human and artistic quality.
jmldspt 1 year ago 2
I had the privilege of seeing him live on his first tour of Australia - He had THE most beautiful voice I have ever heard - for some reason, even his best recordings didn't quite capture it properly IMHO (I'd be interested to know if other JD fans who saw him live agree). A truly rare talent, John will live in our hearts forever.

@captnswing
Absolutely I agree! I was fortunate to see this man perform live in the Rockie mountains in Utah with the utah symphony and all I can tell you is that he sounded amazing. He never sung a note off key and it was like listening to perfection, like a studio vocal perfomance except it was BIGGER and that was from sitting in the very back on the hillside!
tecnolover2642 1 year ago

John had a resonance in his voice that was absolutely perfect. He was born to sing and he did it so well. His modest manner and sincere face combined with the voice to produce something exceptional and unique. I will never forget seeing JD live 3 times.

Tonight, I looked for my old guitar in my house after watching this JD's video.
I bought the guitar when I was a high school student, so it's almost 30 years old.
Then, finally I found it.
It was in a case and I picked it up little by little.
It shines just like it was when I was 17 years old !
The strings were already worn out but sound beautifully !!
I want to start again playing this old guitar and my life...

I still miss his influence. Yet. I try to carry on his campaign for conservation. I never had a father who taught me right from wrong. Listening to John's music....He was like the father I never had.
