@Docterphilly Well Mariah wrote this in 1995. Mariah didn't seperate from Tommy until the end of 1996 and didn't finalise the divorce until 1998 so i doubt this song is about Tommy. The song is more likely to be about her belief in God.

I think its about being alone and unhappy and then finally finding that special someone to love and to love you back.Once you meet that person it's like you're whole world opens up and you're free of all the negative stuff u had going on within u.That's my take on it.I'm curious to hear other people's take on it as the song can mean different things to different people.

What hurt her voice is the high note. If your a professional singer everyone knows that high notes are very dangerous to your vocal chords it like yelling but very extremly loud to the pint it sounds nice and like your whisling but not good for your voice
I can never get over this song. It brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. Though I normally listen to a lot of mainstream pop music, I've been obsessed with Mariah for the past few weeks just because of the texture of her voice and her ability to change tonalities in all of her songs--makes stuff interesting enough to listen to it over again and again
@pandahokk COMPLETELY AGREE! Sometimes it's not the actual song, the lyrics or beat that pulls you in. It's her tone and her melisma that make you sit back and just think wow. Don't get me wrong i love her writing and her vocal range but it's the way she sings her songs that really make me a big fan :)

@pandahokk I totally agree. this is one of my favs from the daydream album. I love the way she fluently moves through different tones and keys, sometimes even in a single word; only a truly skilled singer can do that. the only other singer out now that sings like that is christina aguilera. I also like the gospel sound of the vocal. her mtv unplugged performances also have that really soulful gospel sound and her voice doesn't get lost in all that studio polish. just raw and powerful.
@lilkunta Yeah i definately think alcohol has something to do with it. As soon as she left Tommy and had more freedom her voice changed. Over using her voice, i believe, also contributed to her voice declining. She pushed her voice to it's limits throughout the daydream era. It's quite sad that she reached her vocal peak only 6/7 years into her professional career though.

Take any performance from 1990. Her vocals were full and rich while nowadays they've thinned out. Her chest voice has taken a knock, she can't sustain the big notes like she used to and relies on backing tracks to help her through live performances. Mariah's voice has always been fragile.
My only problem with this song is that it' too short!! I wish it lasted at least a minute longer...add another verse, bridge whatever! I want it longer lol

I´m like you... in denial.. but MC2 was the first album I didn´t buy even though i´ve been a huge fan since 1990! So I really hope you´re righT!
But you know what?! It´s not just the songs that differ, it´s the emotions behind the voice, she doesn´t have them anymore, she used to sing her ass off so that she would make her mark in the industry and become who she is today... now she just sings, no emotion, no feeling, no nothing...

my favorite one from E=MC2 is Love story... but i miss her voice so much... i was addicted more for her voice than even for her songs or music... she still sounds goos but i miss than sensation of waitinf 4 mariah to impress me on a live concert but now i know i wont happen so .... I MISS OLD MARIAH

The problem is, she can't sing like this anymore. So even if she did spend what's left of her voice in order to create an album like the daydream album, she wouldn't be able to perform them live.

That may be true to some extent but i'd rather have impressive vocals on a cd than mediocre/safe vocals so she can perform perfect live.

To an extent, I hear what you mean. But, Mariah's vocals are different on all of her albums. She is always changing vocally. At any rate, she continues to WOW me.
