For most writers, keeping it as a side interest seems to be the healthiest perspective. Even if you have some measure of success, if you don't have to rely upon it, you are able to enjoy it much more. I write short stories in my free time, and I am pursuing magazine publication. I think that's it fun because I don't have to depend upon it; I may do it whenever I am in the mood to do so. If I choose to spend my free time on other things, then I do. Considering how badly paid SF writers were at the time, he had to write a story a week (plus novels! Sometimes 2 or 3 a year) just to eat and pay his bills. A lot of those stories aren't exactly well-written but they still have more ideas in them than the average SF trilogy.
Ah yes, I recall that the Ovaltine hotdog Baptism and communion was popular in the mid 70s with a certain kind of person. But I got mine with coca cola, from my crazy dad in a Bernie inn in Manchester in the uk. It set me in good stead for what came later.
@victorbarovsky meth is benzedrine. They aren't different. One of them is a crystalline powder and teh other one came in allergy inhalers at the time. He just chose the cheap version over the pure one.

@subsamadhi Because this was obviously filmed at the exact time of their meeting. She's had a history of drug abuse, some years have passed, I don't think anyone is "sexy" after having lived a rough life.
