Some people misunderstand Johnny here.... Obviously he is NOT criticizing Evan. He's just stating some situations - it's true that sometimes being more masculine (or the style most people like) is easier. Don't quote him out of context!
I respect Johnny very much as an artist and person, but I dont think he should dismiss others by saying they are "conformists." He should consider that Evan has his own style and isn't trying to play by any rules. Evan has the right to be who he is just like Johnny does.
they're both great - but how can you direct your art ? I think the art must find it's expression. Thre is nobody even remotely like Johnny - can you imagine skating without him?! Evan too - is his unique self with his own style. Via la difference!
It’s obviously that Lysacek has a different style than Weir, he likes suits and Weir likes it flashy! To criticize somebody who has a different style than you and at the same time to whine about beeing not respected for the own style is just stupid!
Weir should take responsibility an stand as it is assumed at the competitions in the last time.
Lysacek won against Plushenko in Vancouver and Plushenko was very musculine and Lysacek was much more feminine and he won Gold not Plushenko! So how can it be that judges just want to see masculine skaters? Lysacek had feathers at one of his outfits and after the Olympics there was a huge discussion about his „gay“ outfits! So if the judges had prejudices in this direction why won Lysacek Gold?
While I like both Johnny and Evan, I have to agree with what Johnny is saying here to some extent. Evan isn't necessarily "conforming" as he suggests, but I have always felt as if Johnny gets harsher judging than most of the other skaters. He still skates and places wonderfully, though, so he should be proud that he can overcome those biases and do so well!
I like both Johnny and Evan..Both have different styles, athletic and entertainng.. Honestly glad they both represented the US.. The US is large enough for all different styles, cultures and beliefs...
I like Johnny and Evan, I get what Johnny is saying but he's talking about how he is just being himself. Apparently Evan isn't? I don't think it's that Evan is 'playing by the rules'. Are you NOT being yourself just because people like you, and are 'easy to deal with'?
Who cares what they dress like or who appeals to them. They are both fantastic skaters, that is their job, and it's the only thing that should be taken into account.
I think the issue is that Evan is probably gay, but he plays straight for sponsorship and stuff and Johnny doesn't want to hide who he is (even though he hasn't 'come out', because it's nobody's business). Maybe Evan takes shots at Johnny, because Evan doesn't want to be outed.
I don't know if Evan is gay and really don't care...unfortunately we live in a society where it is often wise to hide your sexual orientation. Bravo to Johnny for choosing not to do this, but I think it is disgusting that he would attempt to out Evan because he knows the potential consequences firsthand. I understand why so many of his fellow skaters despise him...he's catty, selfish and hypocritial.
who says being good and likable is "conforming." I think they are equally good in different ways. actually I take that back. I like Evan more, because I personally like the way he skates, and it has nothing to do with whats masculine or feminine.
I think you're missing the point. Conforming isn't bad, but you have to admit that Johnny is a little bit more 'out there' than Evan, regardless of wether you think that's better or worse. Everyone has their preference in skating, I like Johnny's style more, but that's just me.
@Salai666 No, I mean I get what you're saying and I think you have a good point. And I think it ultimately comes down to what each audience member prefers. they're both uniquely awesome.
they're both hot as hell

I don't know why everyone thinks Evan Lysacek is so manly that he shits testosterone. He's quite faggy himself!

Evan strives for the sport of figure skating perfection. Johnny strives not for the sport, but to Be Johnny!
