this opening, I absolutely love it. The warm colors, the bittersweet tone, there's something strangely sensual about it too but I can't really explain why....
@ cqtaylor - i agree, Luther would never be on US television which is why I'm getting out of the US w/ my wife (a black woman, I'm white) asap. The US isn't racially tolerant as much as we like to think we are. Luther, a black male, was the MAIN character and his race was never the focus and he wasn't cast in the stereotypical role of blacks. And you'd NEVER see a black leading actor kissing a white woman on television in the US, and not just be f*ck buddies, I mean actually loving each other.
@ssovagoroyal - obviously you haven't watched Private Practice with Taye Diggs and Kate Walsh, who until last Thursday were in a long-term relationship.
Thing I loved about season one of the show was that Luther's race was never an issue, his skills as a detective, and his unorthodox methods, were. However, they couldn't have a show like this on network television in America because producers probably couldn't get their mind around a qualified black detective without making him "drop hip-hop slang" or some crap like that. However, the show probably could work well on cable TV. Which bums me out considerably. :-(
I don't watch Luther, but heard my favourite song of 2010 is used in the title sequence so I had to see it. People should listen to the rest of Heligoland, it's a brilliant album.
I just finished Series 1 on Netflix. BRILLIANT, brilliant show. You have a new fan from across the pond - I sincerely hope that the BBC keeps commissioning further serials.
Best detective show on TV. Idris Elba (Luther) really acts like whatever he's doing's real, not acting. Sure that's his job. But I mean he's really realistic. I had no idea who sang the theme song either. But its so cool I had to look it up & see. Even if you've never seen the show before...if you're channel surfing one night, & land on the BBC channel & hear this song...you will not change the channel. Actually that's what I did. And now I'm hooked. I'm wanting this for a ringtone.

Luther did what Hollywood couldn't do to their detective shows: gritty, yet overwhelmingly sensical and with a hint of realisticism. No offense to Hollywood, I'm just really tired of the same uncreative formula that they've been using in a lot of detective dramas like CSI, NCIS...Maybe it's time for them to turn to UK television, learn a thing or two and improve on it.
@MrEvergreen0375 im n the usa & i have to agree w/ u on the ncis & csi comment..i just cant watch that shit! however, im still addicted to my law & order:svu! :) & apparently theres now law & order n britain so the way they took law & order from us...we really need to steal luther from them!! ;)
@kulgan18 yea me too! damn that netflix w/ their 1 season!!! i was so addicted i watched the entire 1st season n 2 nights then when i was ready for the 2nd season i realized there wasnt 1!! :(
This show is awesome, it's like nothing i've ever seen on night time televison. It's a dark CSI, hannible lector type series, With spectacular writing and riverting drama. Each episode is a finale. Luther does a superb job as .Detective Chief Inspector.
@iBrade, Luther mentally notes down the criminal's position in the van and then asks him to disarm the bomb, justifying his request by reminding the guy how he is unarmed whilst the criminal has a lighter that could burn Luther to shreds. The criminal obliges to render the detonator useless, then Luther delivers his 'guess' of the dice by informing the exact position of where to aim for the police outside :D
There HAS to be more of this show. It is stunning, it really is/. From the theme tune to the actors themselves - especially Idris Elba, who is perfect for this role. BBC get your finger out and commission more of this show. YOU ARE ONTO A WINNER HERE!!!
Absolutely stunning show. I really do hope the BBC commission more of this. Loved it from the very begining. It is raw, fresh, classy, and Luther is like some kind of big, brooding hulk of a bear. Just wonderful. The best bloody show on TV so far...
Elba is by far one of the best actors I have ever seen if not my favourite. What I would give to play characters such as Luther is insane. Currently studying drama at A level, I plan to take it further to university and to one day make it a career. He is one of my top actors along with Leanardo Di Capro and Anthony Head
I love Luther, best TV programme in ages, but it is sooooo BBC with all the good guys being black/asian and the baddies being white. From the episodes I've seen. Either way - quality.
I love the title song n luvvv Massive attack but didnt know this song and thought it had a sound similar to them no wonder i loved it and works ; fits Luther FAB!
My wife and I just discovered this show on Netflix. I'm a huge Elba fan...and he's perfect in this role. Would be a perfect character for novels as well...anyone know who sings this opening? It's pefect for this type of show. BBC does it (and outdoes America) again!!! I'm from the Caribbean and always thought BBC had better quality shows. I'm so glad I missed last weeks episode - only to catch up last night, because it means I only have to wait until tonight to see what happens! Steven Mackintosh (Ian) was INCREDIBLE in episode 5, some of the best acting I've seen in TV for a while... Can't wait for the finale!
Massive Attack was a fantastic choice! My only gripe with the ending of Ep 5 was that they should have kept it silent, without the Sia track, or at least started it later. Elba can more than hold the scene on his own, he doesn't need cheesy musical reinforcement!
super show, haven't been left in real suspense in a very long time with any show or movie,, don't think i've looked forward to watching a tv show as much as this one!! bring on ep 6 and more seasons of a great show!!!
A great opening for a really great series. Episode 5 was incredible, the finale should be tense. I'd be very dissapointed if they didn't make a second series.
The reason to look forward to Tuesday evenings. Luther is undoubtedly the best television drama that the BBC and any other channel for that matter has come out with.
I am amazed at the decline in the ratings and I hope that this does not deter a second series.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ah273 Luther was never planned to be renewed for further seasons. It is a one-time 6 episode mini-series deal. Episode 6 was the series finale.
The character of Luther is fantastic and so is Elba's portrayal, but for further seasons it really would have needed more realistic/interesting cases.
@cavegames Uhhhhh I think you'll find you don't a series 2 is coming out shortly, they've already finished shooting, now they just need it approved, if your going to say things like that, get more actual info first
@Fallenxash I wrote this 10 months ago, and the renewal was announced only pretty recently. The UK series system in most cases works differently than the US system. Self-contained series are produced, with another series possibly being commissioned on success, rather than planning for continuing seasons and cancelling a show when ratings drop. It's a subtle difference, but it's there, and it was the case for Luther.
song at end of episode 5 is by Sia Furler - breathe me (good video with believe it or not Britney Spears on youtube). Sia is one of the most amazing singers!! Whoever chooses the music should be given an award because massive attack, emiliana torrini and Sia furler in one program is immense! All I need is john martyn and tom waits and I am complete.....
does anyone know what the song at the end of episode 1 was? it played whilst alice was looking at madsen and over the preview of ep 2. i really wana find it!
I think that Luther is an excellent piece of programming. It's well acted and has some really deep and intense story-lines. BBC continues to reinvent good crime drama and I'm glad for it!
i love this song, it fits perfect to luther, but was also great for the last episode of misfits.

A great opening for a really great series. Episode 5 was incredible, the finale should be tense. I'd be very dissapointed if they didn't make a second series.

@ironjoker101 Oh they are! ;) Autumn should be the predicted time, if the head of BBC drama approves it, it may not be good enough.

@ironjoker101 Oops, I meant the third series is out on autumn!

The reason to look forward to Tuesday evenings. Luther is undoubtedly the best television drama that the BBC and any other channel for that matter has come out with.
I am amazed at the decline in the ratings and I hope that this does not deter a second series.

@ah273 >BBC and any other channel for that matter has come out with.
No. I'd think the show that gave Idris his fame (The Wire) is a much better show.
moush 1 year ago
@moush of course it is. The Wire is one of the best (if not THE) best shows in the history of television.

@cavegames Uhhhhh I think you'll find you don't a series 2 is coming out shortly, they've already finished shooting, now they just need it approved, if your going to say things like that, get more actual info first
Fallenxash 10 months ago

I think that Luther is an excellent piece of programming. It's well acted and has some really deep and intense story-lines. BBC continues to reinvent good crime drama and I'm glad for it!

Very good TV show
I like the dark feel to this, not many British tv shows are like this which makes even more great to watch.
