im a freshman at desert oasis high school and I REALLY want to be a band drum major really bad next year and this video is helping me learn.. thank you for making these videos because I want as much help as I can get.(:
If My drum major were to yell at someone and tell them they suck, it would only be in front of 21 other people, lol. And we wouldnt lose respect for her, we would point and laugh at the person she just wrecked on and high-five her for it later, lol.
Don't take the way he conducts so serious, well do but every band director has a different way they want their Drum Major to conduct. Good for starters though :P
your 4/4 pattern is very weird. you go in first instead of your hands going down first on the down beat. but uhh you're a good drum major besides that. just the pattern is different.
oh my goodness that comment you made about confronting students on the field is SOOO true!! i can't tell you how many enemies my drum major made during our season this year lol. but she's cool again :)
One thing i've also been seeing with drum majors (in addition to the things you said, but this differs from drum major to drum major) is when a drum major gives you 1 2 3 4 go and the tempo they give you for those four is steady but they slow it down once they start.
Thanks this video helped alot. Next year when i am a junior, my band director wants me to become field commander since i'm tentative and disciplined, but i've never conducted before. He did tell me though it's important that there isn't alot of movement in the shoulder and alot in the fingers. In other words More movement in the smaller muscles and less in the larger if that makes sense.
WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!! NORTH CAROLINA!!! sry bout that. im a freshman and i wanna be a drum major later in my high school career. we have a pretty big band 4A
I've never had a judge take points off for having my thumbs out. Actually at Western Carolina's drum major camp they encourage you to have your thumbs a little relaxed. It's less rigid than having your hand cupped.
@doofdum the video is flipped around. i was wondering this, too. then i realized oh wait, the video is flipped. so he's really cueing with his left hand.
Michael, nice talk about leadership and also about how everything dealing with phasing problems. It's true when there's a tempo problem the drum major is always blamed, but I remember my senior year I would watch you in the 2nd song and when the tempo sped up the drumline always wanted to rush so the saxes would rush and then people would get mad at me or at you guys. I remember James saying that about confronting other band members in front of everyone else, nicely done.

@briannasilva It's not incorrect, it's the more known pattern, but they both are fine as long as the ictus is clearly defined.

Look at the words on his shirt. He's either in a mirror, or the video is mirrored for some reason.
And thanks for these videos. They are clearing up a lot of questions I've had.
