The only thing I don't like about the term 'mulato' is that it's inaccurate. It comes from the Spanish term for mule. "Mule" is actually a technical term, not just the name of an animal. There are mule flowers, mule birds, etc. Mule means to breed two extremes of any species and create a hybrid that is, in itself, sterile and cannot reproduce. For example, the offspring of a jackass (male donkey) and a mare (female horse) is a "mule". Almost all such mules are male, & typically sterile.
@georgieporgieorgie I can relate. Even though I am tanned, I always got teased about being a white girl and "so white." I'm Bahamian, my whole family including my parents are from there, but I was born and raised in America. I never hung out with black people a lot since I like rock music and don't like rap, so I was always an outcast there. My dad actually is the one who teases me about being a white girl 'cause of my musical taste. It's annoying. They say it's teasing, I say it's harassment.
I hate that this happened to you, all I can say is i'm not like that, everyone gets one chance with me. My own cousin (who is mixed) told me that he didn't like black people although it was his white side who disowned him. When I asked him why? he didn't have an answere. He was raised with his black side, who treated him no different than they treated me, he was most popular at an all black school. He didn't hate us he hated himself. Omg this documentary really meant alot to me. My father is multiracial(white Portuguese African) and my mom is full African.Alot of people Ask me What are you?"why is your hair different from other black peoples" Mind you, i am In the 8th grade and people are still curious on my racial identity. In Europe and many american countries, in general, people have an eurocentric idea about race. They understand that people like Mariah Carey are mixed, but they can't conceive the idea that the french player Patrick Vieira is mixed too. The persons that are seen as mulatto there are, in general, son of a mulatto and a white, because the son of a pure black and a white (like Barack Obama) is too dark to be seen like that.

There are many African Americans just like me, who are not biracial, and have some genetic mixture from another group.
Most full blacks who are light skinned are that way from slavery, that's completely different from being a direct mix of white/black. Whether you classify as black or mixed, you are what your parents are, if you have one white parent and one black parent you're mixed, if you have two black parents then yeah you're black.

You are absolutely right about the colorism/ light and dark skin issue.
The sad fact is that many AA's have had nothing but absolute contempt for our kind of people through the decades and there is still a smoldering hatred.
I know this because I got comments and e-mails from biracial teens and adults who told me about how they were treated by blacks, often cruelly.
Being biracial, never liked the term Mulatto which has animalistic overtones and derivations.
Frankly, I never grew amongst either whites or blacks so I never had to answer to any of them.
The truth is both types of peoples are flawed. Thinking that one race is better than the other or that one is preferable to another never occured to me and from what i see leads to nothing more than unhappiness and heartbreak.

I'm Bahamian, my whole family including my parents are from there, but I was born and raised in America. I never hung out with black people a lot since I like rock music and don't like rap, so I was always an outcast there. I hate that this happened to you, all I can say is i'm not like that, everyone gets one chance with me. My own cousin (who is mixed) told me that he didn't like black people although it was his white side who disowned him. When I asked him why? he didn't have an answere. He was raised with his black side, who treated him no different than they treated me, he was most popular at an all black school. He didn't hate us he hated himself. Not all "full breeds" are that way, Your parents aren't!!!!

In Europe and many american countries, in general, people have an eurocentric idea about race. They understand that people like Mariah Carey are mixed, but they can't conceive the idea that the french player Patrick Vieira is mixed too. (Black & white) I know most people assume its 50/50 because of the phenotype (appearance) of the 2 individuals, but genetically it may not be 50/50. I am not biracial. I will not deny that there is not some other mixture, but I classify as Black, not mixed. There are many African Americans just like me, who are not biracial, and have some genetic mixture from another group.

Most full blacks who are light skinned are that way from slavery, that's completely different from being a direct mix of white/black. Whether you classify as black or mixed, you are what your parents are, if you have one white parent and one black parent you're mixed, if you have two black parents then yeah you're black.

There are many African Americans who appear just as many biracials, my husband appears white, but he is African American and he is not biracial, so you're right, he is Black, and there are many other African Americans just like him who are not biracial. There are some biracial who genetically are probably more Black than he is....its really more about genetics...I hope you understand what I'm saying...

If you have a Black parent and they have sickle cell, there is a possibility that you could inherit that gene, or maybe not. Its more about human genes not about what you look like on the outside.

I will say, though, that they certainly have superior looks to white and black people, in my opinion. Mixed people are almost always absolutely gorgeous.

I've got some black blood but if you passed me in the street you wouldn't notice. You can tell people like these and Mariah Carey are mixed with black, but me you wouldn't cos it's only a small amount. I agree with some people, I hate interracial mixing when theres too much of it.

Also what you say is not necessarily true. The ODR was used against invisible blackness, that is, mixed people who looked white. Yet there are instances where people in the slave south who were known to be mixed were accepted as white. There were even laws denoting people 1/8th black as white.

Personally, I'd like to hear mulattos STOP talking about qualities like "good hair," etc. It's distracting because it speaks to petty racial divisions and useless ideas of superiority for things one can't control that are part of a racist system.
Talk instead about the unique perspective of being in BOTH shoes at the same time, and how silly and outdated it makes the whole race thing seem.
Mixed people are the connective tissue of America, it's a role more valuable than anything these days.

The sad fact is that many AA's have had nothing but absolute contempt for our kind of people through the decades and there is still a smoldering hatred.

Being biracial, never liked the term Mulatto which has animalistic overtones and derivations.
Frankly, I never grew amongst either whites or blacks so I never had to answer to any of them.
The truth is both types of peoples are flawed. Thinking that one race is better than the other or that one is preferable to another never occured to me and from what i see leads to nothing more than unhappiness and heartbreak.
Best to consider yourself biracial and move on with your life.
