I was addicted to WoW for 3-4 years, hardcore raiding and pvp. It is an addictive game, and it can be called an addiction, but not an addiction like drugs and such. It is up to the individual to play it, pay for it, and quit it. It came in handy for me at the time due to some personal problems, and allowed me the escape. Once those problems passed, decided to leave and went back to real life. I may one day go back, should I feel the need for the escape, but never regret the memories either.
I've almost lost my job due to wow in the past and since then I've put work before wow but it indeed shows how addictive games can get and U can really lose yourself in them. I agree that U are responsible for your own actions, but U don't always realise how bad U are behaving until U get a serious wake up call. That's mainly the reason why I don't play mmo's anymore. Those games kinda force U to do things like raiding for better gear or do 100 daily quests and I don't want that anymore.
Played WoW from Beta up to end of 2010. In 2006 I started being hardcore and realised it won't work so i stoped for 6 months. After that i never played more than 25 hours a week, and I mostly have great memories of the game. I made friends, had great fun and even matured by meeting older people and people from other countries online. No regret :D
I was just as addicted to starcraft 2 when it came out as I was in my deepest darkest years in WoW. I totally agree video game addiction is a individuals responsibility, but in my honest opinion its not necessarily based off how many hours you play a game as long as your dealing with your rl responsibilities you should be able to play as much as you want and not get judged.
I've had a few mmo addictions but WoW was only able to hold me about a year. The longest I have ever pulled was 5 years on and off on a different mmo. As a solitary introvert by nature, I might of used mmo's as an escape which prolly wasn't to productive to my already poor social life. The close social community I had within the mmo felt like it made up for it till I quit playing (leader died of lung cancer). For what its worth, I don't regret my time spent. I've had worse addictions.
i'm glad my parents never got me a good computer that way i couldn't of played wow back then even if i wanted to, i played outside instead, met new people, and progressed in life. i remember how it was to be addicted to a game (d1 and d2), i would stay home all day and play it, but once you're over it you realize all the opportunities you missed irl
I've played WoW since it first came out and where there were times that I played way too often (hardcore raiding guild) I've made many fond memories and I feel as though it has bolstered my situational awareness in real life. I'm much more aware of what is going on around me when I'm driving now than when I was younger and hadn't been introduced to situational awareness as a vital aspect.
I've been playing WoW 24/7 for 1,5 year straight and it was an amazing time. I failed my high school exam and my social life was dead, but man. The fun times I had in the game totally made up for it. Being guild leader of the best pvp guild on the realm etc. I fucking miss WotLK sometimes..
The very design of World of Warcraft's game systems were created around the concept of keeping you coming back and paying month after month. The game's "rewards" are given to players based on time input into the game. Thus, the more time spent on WoW, the more "reward" coming from the game. Paying a monthly fee adds to the effect of needing to play more. WoW as an individual game has MANY attributes that directly feed possible addition. Part of it's overwhelming success comes from this.
The reason WoW was so addicting is because if you spend like 2 weeks off the game you will be under geared and no one will take you on raids and they will call you noob because of it.
Hello Force. Addiction on WoW simple implies to me you work no need to get addictive to a game not working its ok for me or "any" feel free to play WoW, one more thing i want to add is that WOW is more social addictive as i see it thats all i wanted to share thanks.
Everything is voluntary force. The problems in life are not the system, the item or the "adiction"! It is the people! They are the problem and the solution.
Force! Thanks so much for answering my question. I thought it was very cool of you to do so. I will use this info and try to increase the quality of my content. -James
My Wow addiction lasted about 1,5years. And it was too long. I couldnt imagine myself being addicted for 6 !! years. When your head starts thinking again, after you step away from a game - you just detest the time you spent and what you actually have achieved - nothing - just "fun". And fun is nothing haptic - meaning, having fun like 10-12hours a day, like I did, is way too much. IRL? Maybe that wouldve been something different. But I love that I made this experience. It was worth making it.
I started playing World of Warcraft in the EU beta for vanilla when I was 12 years old. For the next 5 years it was my only hobby. Every single hour in school I was thinking about WoW and what I should do and I rushed home to play into the late night. I often went to bed at 3 in the night. However I do not regret anything. I have awesome memories from WoW and get sentimental easily, and I did a good job in school anyway.
@Mardurenn Social interaction and friends are also an important part of life. I'm not saying that playing a game is bad but it's good to keep a healthy balance.
@MrHiByeGaming well I agree with you, but the group of friends that I hung with also played WoW like me. what did I miss? going to parties and getting drunk, maybe getting laid at that time, but do I regret my choice to play WoW? no, I was very happy and did enjoy it. A lot of people turn their back to a game when they quit playing it and say things like "I was just wasting time blabla". as long as it's fun, it's not a waste :)
@Mardurenn kinda funny man, when diablo2 was in its prime in like 2003-2004 all I could think about was getting hgome and playing it. I even ditched some of my highschool classes to rush home to play
@MessyRTK That's actually a common problem among gamers, lack of eye moisturization, including limited blinking due to the constant attention to the screen. Not very healthy, but nothing eyedrops can't handle. :)
Addiction is used mainly when people talk about drugs. However being addicted to drugs is one thing because although you continue to do the drug there is never any sense of achievement. So you can't really say someone is addicted to wow (or any video game for that matter.) You are always killing the boss, or beating someone in competition. There is always something you are working towards to.
A wow addiction can, but not always, be broken by deleting all of your characters. Then perhaps everyone you might have called friend no longer communicates with you. I am thirty years old after breaking my addiction and my only friends are my mom and dad.
Here is my story of being addicted to a game....Played runescape full on for roughly a year, spending most of my free time doing the same terrible looking stat building. gained weight had no social life and basically fit the description of "one who has no life"To kick the addiction it took outside help. Somebody hacked my account and took all my hard earned gear and treasures I had acquired. As annoying as hackers can be, they also do serve a purpose, and I am now runescape free and loving life!
@masacru001 Might be this: Möbius syndrome (also spelled Moebius) is an extremely rare congenital neurological disorder which is characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move the eyes from side to side. Most people with Möbius syndrome are born with complete facial paralysis and cannot close their eyes or form facial expressions. :(
Moving on from WoW is probably one of the most rewarding things i've done when it comes to games... It really does 'rule' ones focus, especially if you are addicted.
There are so many varied reasons why people play long hours, ranging from non stop "new game high", too much time to spend, depression, and at times it can also simply be social obligation. Also keep in mind that in some places (looking at areas in the US, and Asia), going outside is just not an option, so what else is there when tv is horrible. I admit, a rare few people are just addicted to the odds of getting new shinies to the point of self deprevation, but its one thing or another for them.
Maybe it might help you to focus for a week and devise a plan to get more viewers. Its a shame your show doesn't get more attention. You mentioned the game station but I have yet to see any support from either side or from anywhere :(
The approach to "gaming addiction" has always concerned me. While I understand that some can become obsessed and spend too much time on a game, the fact that most of the population, especially older generations, are not gamers and don't understand gaming usually leads to people vilifying gaming as some kind of vice, and they call regular gamers neurotic addicts. My sympathies and support goes to gamers who want to correct their habits when they go too far, but there's nothing wrong with gaming.
Video game addiction is just about the same as TV addictions, the whole reason is life being full of shit and depressing. I praise video games for stopping me from hanging myself over how shitty life is in this unpaid slave work country that Poland is.
The term "video game addiction" has always annoyed me. Just like force said it's the gamer, not the game. If anything it should really be called irresponsibility to gaming.
I was addicted to WoW prior to college, but I quit and never looked back. I'm trying to get a degree in a major that actually requires work so I can't be raiding for hours almost everyday, but I always have time to pwn some scrubs online, buwahaha.
I think Raiding is what can turn that game into a true time sink. I certainly spent too many hours with the game but for the most part it was a fun hobby. It's a matter of balance with games like that.
lol you dont work all day, 2-3 for the force feed, then like 1h of starcraft if that, rendering dosent take any of his time. so really its like 4-5 hours max. could be done for lunch every day
@w0Iverine There is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into running a YouTube channel and growing a brand. I would say I do about 2-3 hours of recording every day. Another 2-3 hours of editing, 1 hour of responding to emails/YouTube PMs, and then another 2 hours of networking.
In addition to that the process of getting the videos rendered, uploaded, adding video responses and annotations takes time. It's not a standard 9-5 job, but there is work involved if you want to be successful.
@w0Iverine I am also in the process of re-launching my website (ForceStrategyGaming . com). The site will be a single location to get video guides / tutorials / tips for a wide array of games. Been prepping that for the past few months and we are coming close launch.
I'm really excited to have the site coming out soon, and hopefully you all will find it enjoyable / helpful
And this all leads up to my eventual plans of opening up a gaming store / lan center in the next 10 years. =)
@ForceSC2strategy Ah good for you, Force. I've been following you ever since you posted your Youtube channel on the old Diablo II forums and I've quite liked the info you gave on Diablo III and other games. Hell, most of what I know of D3 is from following your channel. Thanks for all your hard work and I hope you get to open that gaming store soon™, buddy.
@ForceSC2strategy With your understanding of the gaming industry and the gamers themselves, all coupled with a strong sense of ethics, I would most certainly be interested in purchasing games from any future store of yours.
I don't think it's addiction. I think it's emptiness. I've played Wow and know people who played to much, but even after they leave it, they just go waste thier life on something other game or other hobby.
Addicts are just unispired people lost in unproductive activities.
this is why i love the internet so much, it's great that you can make a living doing this Force, and because you can do full time, we get such a great service

Force, your not alone. Many of us sunk our livelihoods into WoW and we can't get it back. The important thing is... We broke free. Well done brother. I am feeling a WoW Anonymous group starting here..
The only thing I majorly regret about the wow experience was grinding cernarian rep in vanilla for that trinket that increased attack power. I feel as though that summer was wasting in grinding. Aside from that, it was decently fun for most of it, if somewhat time consuming, and I only really quit permanently because of imbalances in the arena and my long time guild collapsing. Though if I think about it, wow may have helped build my current computer habit where I do nothing productive for hours
correct me if im wrong but isn't the rendering process an automated one? Im not in any position to make judgements on the nature of your job but it just strikes me as inappropriate to include rendering time into the work day if it is simply an automated process started by the click of a button.
People are addicted due to the competitive nature of most games. Also because real life sucks and you can find more interesting people online than outside.
What's with all you OCD viewers wanting him to blink? If you think there's something wrong with him because he doesn't blink as often as you'd like him to, that's your own problem. Get yourself checked.
I can relate to the WoW addiction thing. Fortunately it came out after I was out of school and landed me a hotty, otherwise I might have ended up living in my parent's basement! Once the addiction is broken, you kind of look back and wonder wtf you were thinking, but meh, it is what it is :)
About game addiction: i think the problem is that u can look the most badass of em all online while your life is in ruins and u might be kicked out of your apartment in a week, but no1 can see that, and if any1 wants to challange you or even get close to that coolness, they cant only if they give up those things as well, but they might be unaware of it.
I think self restriction request option would be usefull. WHen u can preset the amoun of hours u want to play per week, and auto lock out after
Video Games are as addictive as any other hobby. I know people who are addicted to other people to an unhealthy level. Demonizing Video Games over everything else as being addictive is not right. Everything can be addictive if taken too much. Treating it like a drug is not the correct way to "treat" it thought because it is addicting in a different way.
Thanks for sharing your editing process, Dennis. People overlook the time consumption that editing actually requires, in order for quality uploads. I'm a fellow Youtube Gamer (Let's Plays, D3 News, commentary, etc.) and I'm still learning quite a lot regarding techniques and the most convenient strategies to create videos. If I may ask, how long did it take you to get your youtube channel to take off? Thank you!
@Jebzar very true, given that your video is 8 mins long (rounding up) you have a relatively slow render speed. I render full 1080p video with 48k htz audio quickly. an hour long video takes under 20 min. if your video editing program allows for hardware acceloration, it cuts time down a lot. personally, my computer is more than really needed and is overclocked as well, so my times are not really relivant. but keep in mind that audio quality doesnt need to be as high, youtube degrades its quality
Keep up the good work Force. You are dedicated to your cause and that makes us dedicated to you. I think breakout success for you is right around the corner.

It's a matter of balance with games like that.

lol you dont work all day, 2-3 for the force feed, then like 1h of starcraft if that, rendering dosent take any of his time. so really its like 4-5 hours max. could be done for lunch every day
w0Iverine 3 weeks ago

I don't think it's addiction. I think it's emptiness. I've played Wow and know people who played to much, but even after they leave it, they just go waste thier life on something other game or other hobby.
Addicts are just unispired people lost in unproductive activities.

mmonitto2484 3 weeks ago

TheGreatRakatan 3 weeks ago in playlist The Force Feed
Thanks for sharing your editing process, Dennis. People overlook the time consumption that editing actually requires, in order for quality uploads. I'm a fellow Youtube Gamer (Let's Plays, D3 News, commentary, etc.) and I'm still learning quite a lot regarding techniques and the most convenient strategies to create videos. If I may ask, how long did it take you to get your youtube channel to take off? Thank you!
Jebzar 3 weeks ago 16
@Jebzar very true, given that your video is 8 mins long (rounding up) you have a relatively slow render speed. I render full 1080p video with 48k htz audio quickly. an hour long video takes under 20 min. if your video editing program allows for hardware acceloration, it cuts time down a lot. personally, my computer is more than really needed and is overclocked as well, so my times are not really relivant. but keep in mind that audio quality doesnt need to be as high, youtube degrades its quality

Nothing is ever as black and white that you can say X is the problem.
All I know is that WoW is design around the idea of getting you addicted to the game, so the game itself sure is a big part of the problem.
