The one thing that i notice after racing kart for 11 years, is that you cant expect to just buy a shifter kart or rotax and be able to run fast right away. They really are powerful machines, i'm not trying to discourage anyone, but if you've never driven a kart before and you buy a $6,000 rotax, your not going to be able to handle it, theres just too much power. I would suggest getting something like a yamaha kt100 or even a 4-cycle and work your way up.
Good vid.... To the comment on the bumping I typically give a little tap initially,if you seem to ignore my friendly gesture of "get the hell outta my way I'm faster than you" then you get the big bump to the inside I go and the walls your next stop that's in extreme cases I prefer a clean run.. So do me a favor moooove ooover!
@DLD14kMtB first go to your local club and ask about a arrive and drive series. If they have one taen get started in that. I wouldn't recommend buying a kart right away cause there about $7,000 if u do want to get into it and get more pro at it buy a used kart. My club brings in the karts from the grand finals. For a motor I recommend rotax because it's a very reliable motor but if your club dosent use it then u will have to go with what your club runs. I hope this helped a bit
Hey, I want to get into karting. I'm on the CRG factory website and am trying figure out how to buy the right kart for me. I'm 13. Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated. I've always loved cars and racing and recently found out that a lot of drivers got into racing through karting. So, then I decided that if I really want to get into racing, I should buy a kart and get started! So any buying tips and advice on leagues and events or anything having to do with karting feel free to share!

Rotax max motors make 28 HP, they look like Jr motors to me, but even then those make 20 hp. if its not a Jr motor then I guess it could be a mini max motor, but I don't know why you would put a motor that is meant to be for 10 year olds on a full size chassis. real karts that you would actually race, would probably feel like a Mazda star car, in terms of acceleration a cornering G's
@101JuventusFan I guess, I've never see that up in the northwest, but our karting community is small up here. our 15hp classes are world formula karts.
Great episode. When I was last racing karts back in the mid-90s the benchmark for performance was 0 - 100 mph - 0 in 5 seconds or 400 feet, whichever came first. That was with a 125cc GP motor (45hp), but the single speed reed valve and piston port motors running a wet clutch or direct drive were not far off, and were sometimes faster.
i love karting, i hardly ever go, since a) theres no place around me, b) i dont own a kart, but i go to places like the little six flags place, or this little indoor track, were sure there underpowered, and everyone else doesnt know how to kart usually, but its so much fun and i love the challange... ive always wanted to kart and still do but im starting to get old for it :(
I beg to differ with how to get in racing, iRacing is better to get in, it is less expensive than karting and if you get the right materials, it is almost like karting and......you can win money unlike iRacing. But hey, I who am I to say? I'm a 2 Time KRA Champ!
@LeoParente exactly, I think there is a good dozen ways to get into racing, but as I said maybe iRacing and karting top the charts in ways to get in to racing, both are great. Also, thanks for responding to my comment.
@GTAracer24 I got a go kart place in my town. It's an indoor track. I am not sure if it's just for fun or you can join something to race. I am looking into stock car racing. I don't know anything about how to even get a car and what to do. Any advice? Thank you friend :)

wow. that was the best thursday show i've seen in a while. what other showes like this are you thinking of doing? i hope to see JF Musial and Leo Parente in more How to videos. :)
great episode, but what do you guys think of hpde days and local time attacks on go kart tracks? its affordable, and while not "racing", its the thrill/skill without the huge cost.
You have to start young, and good luck having parents that know about F1 and CARTING @ the age of 9 with time/Money...And good luck being child that knows the exact same at 9. In America, that's especially difficult knowing the sport culture.
If you don't/didn't have that, don't dream on becoming a F1 star. However you can still have fun tho whipping the mid age crisis locals and pretending are an F1 prospect!
I think FLD should make a episode of the biography of everyone and how it all started. Really, cause I'm really interested at the point where how you guys are doing totally better than any other car shows out there.
Anyone thinking about getting in to karting should google "Autoblog Introduction to Karting" they did a seven part series 1.5 years ago. It goes in to things like buying the kart, and actually getting started.
Find a local competitive gokart track near you and if you get impressive laptimes, you might get spotted by sponsors or someone local there that has connections.
Karting is the best thing that's ever happened to me. The community, the competition, the adrenaline. Thanks for exposing this wonderful sport to the world.
GREAT EPISODE. loved the change from the regular wednesday routine. i think more people need to know how to get into a sport they love, beacuse lets face it, you cant just go up to shumacher (spelling?) and ask him, so how do i begin racing??

no real wheel diff makes karting even much more fun. u need to learn how to throttle and if u dont ur bound to lose speed and time. i dont kart often as in toronto there is no serious spot, but when i visit my bro in dubai i go there a lot as they have akick ass outdoor track and indoor.. i tried 180bhp open wheeler there also. man that was a rush.. too bad i cant try an f1 car :(
it's nice to see a reality check video explaining that racing isn't just fun and games, you're racing because you want to race, you want to win, and that is a more rewardable goal than just wanting to go fast. Btw, Leo, yes you can blame the sim racers for the "bumping".
JF, are you wearing a rental suit, or do you just have the jamaican flag on your suit, or are you actually jamaican? (please dont get pissed if i said something stupid)
@sid203 i know there's a really nice place in new castle delaware that i've been to. its an indoor facility, 1/4 mile race track. the cars wee averaging 24 second lap times, so they were pretty quick. Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix, thats the name of the place.
I would have liked to have seen some full laps (maybe from the onboard) and some race-craft in action surely you have enough leftover footage to throw that together for another epp ;)
Excellent episode. I've been doing indoor karting for a couple of years now, and I agree that it does mirror actual race car racing pretty closely. Karting is so incredibly intoxicating, that I get giddy every time I step into a kart. And JF, if we ever faced each other in a kart race, I'd totally beat you.
@XDRONIN Around 80kg(180lbs).So the kart alone has 150 hp per ton power to weight ratio. Now with the driver, it depends on the weight of the driver but lets say you are 100 kg (220lbs)the power to weight will be 66 hp per ton.Compare that to a Prius (with again 100 kg driver)and It's 67 hp/ton.Damn near close. But is so isn't driving like a Prius LOOL.

Good work guys, I think we would all love more of this stuff and less Alex Roy, right audience?
camronm77 9 months ago
no real wheel diff makes karting even much more fun. u need to learn how to throttle and if u dont ur bound to lose speed and time. i dont kart often as in toronto there is no serious spot, but when i visit my bro in dubai i go there a lot as they have akick ass outdoor track and indoor.. i tried 180bhp open wheeler there also. man that was a rush.. too bad i cant try an f1 car :(

Aside from GPNY where can us NY guys race karts seriously?
Raige24 9 months ago
it's nice to see a reality check video explaining that racing isn't just fun and games, you're racing because you want to race, you want to win, and that is a more rewardable goal than just wanting to go fast. Btw, Leo, yes you can blame the sim racers for the "bumping".

any places in new jersey for carting ?
Just curious
I can't drive to upstate new york every time i want to race a cart
sid203 9 months ago
@sid203 i know there's a really nice place in new castle delaware that i've been to. its an indoor facility, 1/4 mile race track. the cars wee averaging 24 second lap times, so they were pretty quick. Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix, thats the name of the place.

Excellent episode. I've been doing indoor karting for a couple of years now, and I agree that it does mirror actual race car racing pretty closely. Karting is so incredibly intoxicating, that I get giddy every time I step into a kart. And JF, if we ever faced each other in a kart race, I'd totally beat you.

nice show guys,
question:
What's the Power to Weight ratio of these Karts?
You said, that they have 12Hp but not how much these things weight.
XDRONIN 9 months ago
@XDRONIN Around 80kg(180lbs).So the kart alone has 150 hp per ton power to weight ratio. Now with the driver, it depends on the weight of the driver but lets say you are 100 kg (220lbs)the power to weight will be 66 hp per ton.Compare that to a Prius (with again 100 kg driver)and It's 67 hp/ton.Damn near close. But is so isn't driving like a Prius LOOL.
Antari007 9 months ago
@Antari007 Thank you,
I weight less than 70kg though and I've driven a Prius, so yeah thanks; and no on the Prius. LOL
