--because of the distance between stars and galaxies a single world must attain supreme technology...there cannot be a sharing of basic technology until one single world creates basically a time machine... ptahhotep--says one cannot attain the limits of craftsmanship, and there is no craftsman who acquires his total mastery.
There must be many Earth like planets out there given that the Universe is great at making planetoids, etc. However life still may only be here, or maybe not. Until we definitively nail down how Abiogenesis happened, we have no way to calculate the odds with any degree of certainty.
Dude be sure to caulk the end grains of the new piece of crap sawdust board you replace there. And be sure to flash the windowsill with metal and caulk it in such that water can't get behind there again. Use aluminum foil if you have to, lol.
You might want to jerk out any wet insulation and at least dry it before you reinsert in too.
But if it does happen (life) every so many billion years on one of the trillions of planets how does it change zero sum? or even the awkward mechanisms of cannibalism, addiction & reproduction. An intelligent civilization will eventually understand this (zero sum) and eventually decide to gracefully leave existence, so all this Drake Equation crap is just a useless game to figure out if our crap on earth happens somewhere else in another time. So what the fuck?
Agree that life is almost certainly a very rare event. However, there is a problem here with inferring process from pattern. Say that de-novo life was common: The problem for 'new' life on earth is that it has to compete with much, much more sophisticated stuff that is already established. Perhaps a good analogy is the rapid evolution of strange creatures on islands compared to the continents. Such beasties require the isolation to evolve and rarely survive secondary contact.
@RomulanMastermind The short answer is that I don't 'know' (anything) for sure, We certainly don't have to infer multiple origins for life on Earth and, though we still might find life elsewhere in the solar system, there are no obvious signs of it.
Gary's understanding of Biology seems pretty sound to me. Not his fault that the implications of it are less than uplifting.
Mayne one possibility could be that life can exist only in cellular form which divides and replicates, etc. Maybe that's the only blueprint for life in the universe. The division and replication is the original fracture that took place after the big bang, or so they say.

He's planning on doing a video series on the topic.

Just because someone is not traveling back in time and saying "hey, i'm from the future"... it is NOT proof that time travel is not possible.
There could be laws and restrictions on time travel- from a more civilized advanced cilvilization than us.
another ignorant statement this fool makes is that ...
we haven't seen this "NOISE'' from other cilvilizations.
to date, we have not looked further than a few hundred light years.
sorry, the universe is much bigger.
what an idiot

@RomulanMastermind so your arguing its stupid to think time travel is impossible without any evidence?
detr1mentalist 1 year ago
The mathematics of time travel all preclude travel backwards to a time prior to the existence of a mechanism for time travel.

This wouldn't have gotten so much attention if the math was a little tough. A kid could have written the equation after watching a sci-fi movie.

"Imagine us in a million years - We'll be making a lot of noise in the Universe." I love that, making noise. That's a fantastic quote. TY Inm. :)

Maybe time travelling won't be invented until 1,000,000 years into the future and nobody thought to come back this far...

@hoverboverer
how do you know life is a very RARE event?
Did you visit thousands of planets?
Don't listen to this fuckin idiot.
His philosophy is based on giving up on life.
