He was so cool looking. Everyone else who dressed in that flamboyant psychedelic style looked like an idiot but Syd made it work and he always looked super cool, even today.
I remember when I was 14 I got my first acoustic guitar and called it Syd! I also wrote 'shine on' in permanent marker on it. I still have it aswell even though it was crap guitar!!!
Fellow Syd fans take a minute to check out my song its called "the majority" i wrote it a while ago but i uploaded it the other day. id appreciate your comments its on my profile favourites.
I'm 14 and I know what good and underrated music was. This is. I have just ordered 'Opel', 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Barrett' becuase I want to make people hear how good he was.
My copy of the biography "Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head" by Rob Chapman arrived in the mail today. Quite a fitting date to receive a Barrett gift, or what? :P
Syd was never underrated, everyone from that era knew what a talent and influence he had on how floyd progressed namely thru Guilmore, who kept him alive! Shine on you Crazy Diamond!
He was NOT crazy. And he did not go to an asylum either. I almost feel like it was an image he was trying to project for some reason (His first solo album was called "The Madcap Laughs", the "madcap" obviously referencing him) I think, however, that he was well aware and scared of what the drugs were doing to him. That's why he "retired". He just wanted to live a normal life, and I suppose I can't blame him for that.
@MagiKpeople And his lyrics are not all about LSD.
By looking at them, one might be tempted to say that his lyrics were nonsensical because of his "craziness". But they are not nonsensical. Of course they are not as straight-forward and simple as most songs you hear on the radio, but that's just what makes them great.
The guy seriously was a lyrical genius. Just look at the lyrics for this song. They might seem somewhat nonsensical at first (or at least drug-induced) but they really
@MagiKpeople ...but they really are a bunch of reference to both English poems and classic works of litterature and his childhood. It is very brilliantly written.
If you are interested by the meaning behind the lyrics of this particular song, I suggest you read the essay called "Untangling the Octopus", I believe the author made three versions of it, each adding on the previous one.
It is really interesting and really makes you appreciate the beauty of Barrett's poetry!
Let's enjoy the music if you like it and leave the discussions about illness or PF or Roger Waters or whatever out please. Thanks for the upload btw ;)

he wasnt even diagnosed by schizo, cuse he never visit any docs, he was no schizophrenic and had no symptoms of schizophrenia in his life. He suffered from severe emotional issues - couldn't handle stress of any kind very well at all and would virtually shut down (on some rare occasions he'd freak out) when any emotionally demanding situation presented itself.and then there was his mental break down, and weird behaviour, his sister told he hadnt mental ill,but he wasnt even normal
@bibi5027 What you're saying makes no sense. If someone has "severe emotional issues" or "wasn't even normal" then obviously they have a mental disorder, whether it's bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc. etc. You don't need a diagnosis to know something is wrong with you. And by the way, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with people who have mental disorders, because I myself have a few problems... I'm just saying there's no point in denying it.
@bibi5027 no man he was schizo for sure. he didnt eat acid every now and again... he ate it alot. even with good acid there will always be times of paranoia. theres always a point in every trip where you have to stop for a second and level out. maybe things gotta little too fun or just gotta little too wierd and you have to pause yourself to bring it back together. take those moments and add pressure from the band, the lable, your friends and society. what do you get? schizo

@bibi5027 that makes sense. i only assumed shcizo because i had a friend that was really crazy on acid and other shit to a point where it changed his behaviour. he went from the calmest guy you ever knew to an angry person. he was depressed, got mad easy and acted like he hated everyone. he eventually got some help and stayed at a shepards hill for awhile where he was diagnosed schizo. thats the only reason i assumed it was. im sorry about your condition, all the best my friend.

It's reflected in Dark side of the moon. That wasn't for Syd - he was possibly too ethereal for rock posturing, even in one of the more intellectual bands. He understandably returned to the source of his childhood imagination- Cambridge- and seemingly lived a quiet life. A handsome, gentle, particularly English, man.
@Picnicl you say "particularly english man" what do you mean, there are 25+ million "englishmen" so how are all exactly the same :D...he definitely aint no northern stereotype :P...but anyway my point is I subscribe to individualism which was a brythonic celtic thing (but thats all corrupted now like everything else :( )
@3tangle3 Well for me it's not the 'British Bulldog' , goths, heavy metallers, disco fans. It's someone in touch with something much older and with the spirit of the age that they gained popularity in. People have made comparisons about him being a kind of English fairy / faery. If you call people a fairy nowadays they think it's an insult! Englishness in the way I think of it - like Monty Python -has to look eccentric, has to look 'above its station' to some people, and is sometimes reclusive.

@ThanksDoctorThoctor I just think syd barrett was a truly individualistic character that you cant really group into any particular grouping or prejudice :)....RIP
I think that when people concentrate on the acid thing they look at it in a very simplistic way. I am currently reading Syd Barrett- A very irregular head (an uinfortunately unsympathetic title I think for what is generally a sympathetic book). I think that Syd Barrett would have probably been a recluse even if he hadn't taken drugs. This is someone who was brilliantly Lewis Carroll-like. Not only were some of his sources of the 1860s but I think that he disliked the ending of the time he
People always see bad things. Keep in mind it was the whole Syd Story which actualy made Pink Floyd. Syd, his mental illness and the fact, that David & co were his friends led to one of the greatest bands ever.
I am sure Syd would have grown himself. His heritage instead IS real and we have to be thankful for that.
Wow, that is super effing lazy "nosral1990". With any luck your poor fingers won't drop. There is something to be said for realizing that the really good stuff isn't so readily available. If this lack of popular awareness is so under your skin, please research and post more of these gems. Sorry, I only meant avoid Hate.
@musicdork4ever or composing amazing songs together with his musical soulmate Rick Wright (who was deeply depressed of what Roger Waters did to Syd in 1968 - I have read that he was ready to leave PF too, if Syd formed some new band, as Peter Jenner advised him to do)...
Syd is so cool . I got a comic book about him .. it's AMAZING, But the only thing is ; it was one of the most expensive comic books in the store ... Eh , it was worth it . This song is really cool , i love it

My favorite Syd line is "With ekimo chain, i've tattoed my brains all the way...won't you miss me, wouldn't you miss me at all?" Eskimo chain is a type of pattern much like Celtic knot artwork. If that's what's all over your brain then you know you've gone and got some good shit...
@iscream22 , Hi there, I have no clear picture of what you are getting at, although I suspect it's interesting. I like pot, but I don't like sitting on pots and pans. I went for a walk yesterday and was flabbergasted when I suddenly heard a vulgar cry for the end of the world that didn't come that would have come if it were not for the placement of the beginning. And then I sat on the grass and counted widgets.
@FuckngBastard you can say what you will about syd barrett, because its obvious youre completely wrong. if you look through hitchcocks influences among them youll find syd barrett. also syd barrett stopped close to the late 70's while robyn started playing in 1976. even if barrett were to have stolen his material, syd is a huge pioneer in psychedellic rock and created the amazing sound that is pink floyd. like roger waters would say youre just another brick in the wall and a fucking bastard.
He was gifted with the ability to see past the veil that shrouds the perceptions we experience and draw our truths from. He was not the type of person who could comprehend greed and corruption as a way to promote humanity and was tormented by it to the point that he decided to unwittingly percolate his gray matter with Lysergic until it didn't matter anymore. I'll bet it was a lot of fun.
why does everyone talk about Justin Bieber on every you tube page? just be glad that his career will be over in a few months unless he keeps taking the hormones or gets castrated ;) this is quality music here...
@Excogitant because everybody hate him which is bad to hate people. Its weird. Why they dont compare Syd Barrett with I dont know something thats legendary as him like, for example Paul Mccartney.
@ FB "Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett." and began his recording career 10 years later.... Sure, that's plagiarism if you have a time machine.
@Fucking Bastard, Robyn Hitchcock's Soft Boys came out in 1980.
Barrett was long dropped out when Hitchcock came along. Hitchcock highly influenced by Barrett's Pink Floyd stuff and solo stuff in 60's and 70's. The person who came before cannot ripoff the artist which comes later, unless time travel involved.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not only did Syd Barrett deliberately plagiarize Robyn Hitchcock, he was not very original with the "look at me, I'm nuttier than the 100 sacks I bagged at boarding school" pose.
Slacker Brian Jones drowned himself with honor, rather than growing fat and old like Barrett. Justin Bieber would opt for drowning, or O.D. like Hendrix and Joplin, because Bieber is cool. As Bieber is well-balanced, he'll see himself in the RARHOF.
Syd Barrett was a dead weight Robyn Hitchcock impersonator.
Brian Jones drowning was a terrible accident (regardless of him being a jerk or not) and so was Hendrix' and Joplin's death. Barrett was a great artist, why would you a. say something terrible about the poor guy and b. bring up stupid justin beiber! Beiber will be forgotten in 3 years time (he has no talent and I'm sure he is actually a girl), while Barrett will still remain to be remembered as a great artist.
STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! SYD BARRETT DID NOT PLAGIARIZE ANYBODY, EVERYBODY PLAGIARIZED HIM!!!!!!!! BIEBER, is just some suck up who acts cooler than he is, has no musical talent, and then disney found him and took his songs and put them through hundreds of voice-enhancement machines. IF YOU WANT TO WRITE CRAP RIGHT IT SOME WHERE ELSE!!!!!!!

Wow, that is super effing lazy "nosral1990". With any luck your poor fingers won't drop. There is something to be said for realizing that the really good stuff isn't so readily available. If this lack of popular awareness is so under your skin, please research and post more of these gems. Sorry, I only meant avoid Hate.

robert wyatt is tasty. big factor in this song for me. he's an amazing artist + quite willing to indulge Syd in his vision.

@musicdork4ever or composing amazing songs together with his musical soulmate Rick Wright (who was deeply depressed of what Roger Waters did to Syd in 1968 - I have read that he was ready to leave PF too, if Syd formed some new band, as Peter Jenner advised him to do)...

Funny how the album is called "The Madcap Laughs", but what he says in this song is "The mad cat laughed at the man on the border" and not "madcap"
In that line, syd was actually referencing Edward Lears's "There Was An Old Man on The Border".
Now the lyrics of the last line before the final chorus often also are pretty unclear.
I personnally think it is "So merrily trip and go to my side" (might be "at" instead of "to" ) and not "trip forgo my side" or "for good my side"

My favorite Syd line is "With ekimo chain, i've tattoed my brains all the way...won't you miss me, wouldn't you miss me at all?" Eskimo chain is a type of pattern much like Celtic knot artwork. If that's what's all over your brain then you know you've gone and got some good shit...

iscream22 9 months ago

Toasterman7642 10 months ago
He was gifted with the ability to see past the veil that shrouds the perceptions we experience and draw our truths from. He was not the type of person who could comprehend greed and corruption as a way to promote humanity and was tormented by it to the point that he decided to unwittingly percolate his gray matter with Lysergic until it didn't matter anymore. I'll bet it was a lot of fun.

why does everyone talk about Justin Bieber on every you tube page? just be glad that his career will be over in a few months unless he keeps taking the hormones or gets castrated ;) this is quality music here...
Excogitant 10 months ago
@Excogitant because everybody hate him which is bad to hate people. Its weird. Why they dont compare Syd Barrett with I dont know something thats legendary as him like, for example Paul Mccartney.
sakisrip 10 months ago
@ FB "Hitchcock's musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett." and began his recording career 10 years later.... Sure, that's plagiarism if you have a time machine.
Callaghan4n6 10 months ago 2
Just came here to listen to a Syd song.
Giselle62 10 months ago 2
in what is fucking bieber balanced? it has a pussy but no tits, that isn't well balanced.
and why go to a syd barrett video and say he's a bastard and that he impersonated
robin Hitchcock they are both good but you are a fuckng bastard as your name says.
MRklaasvaak1 10 months ago

FuckngBastard 10 months ago
@FuckngBastard
Your name fits you well
Brian Jones drowning was a terrible accident (regardless of him being a jerk or not) and so was Hendrix' and Joplin's death. Barrett was a great artist, why would you a. say something terrible about the poor guy and b. bring up stupid justin beiber! Beiber will be forgotten in 3 years time (he has no talent and I'm sure he is actually a girl), while Barrett will still remain to be remembered as a great artist.
Once again, your name fits you.
bluesandpinkfloyd 10 months ago 2
@FuckngBastard
STUPID! STUPID!
