the best way to (advance) block this is by jumping, that way he will land the first hit and you can advance guard or simply guard

He's so small that the chances of you actually getting hit to advance guard it are slim, meaning you'll likely throw out a normal and get counterhit, so it's literally a coinflip unless you're on the edge of the screen.
