Ha! The audience didn't seem to know who Tommy Emmanuel was when introduced... They know who he is now!!!!!
PS. My San Diego guitarist, who is a bad arse in his own right, has nothing but high praise for BP's skills on the sixer. Never really listened to him before. Glad I did. He can bring it!
Un-@#$%^-believably great! Thanks for posting. But, unlike people who mentioned that it turned them on to Tommy Emmanuel, this turned me on to Brad Paisley's guitar work. (I was already a fan of his songs.) The reason I've been a fan of Tommy Emmanuel so long is that he did a series of recordings with Chet Artkins, and anyone who's heard those already knew many years ago what a treasure Tommy is as a guitarist.
TOMMY E. by far the GREATEST Guitar Player Entertainer and Friend that ever LIVED and still going>...... And Brad not bad, not bad at all.. Great Post, Thanks.....
Simply Amazing! Two of my all time favorite guitar players. I had the honor of seeing Tommy Emmanuel live with his brother and band in Baton Rouge, LA recently. Now that was AMAZING!! :-)
@fingerstylefan this showdown or should i say friendly jam, was obviously a tad bit out in the out of control zone for brad. He sounded ok in a couple of places, but definelty skiing in the out of bounds. wheres as T E never seems to look flustered, ever! it makes me sick
Please keep in mind that Tommy is a Certified Guitar Player, not a Nashville Recording Artist like Brad is. Each one is accomplished in their own beautiful style, unfortunately, Brad has more exposure on the radio, and Tommy has to go world wide, most venues wouldnt sell outlike Brads for Tommy, because he doesnt have the same outreach. I love both their work, and I hope they are around for a long long time.
As I browse through YouTube watching Tommy's videos there are two things which always reach out and touch me. The first is the utter joy Tommy shows when he plays. The second is that while Tommy has the talent to play circles around just about anyone, when he shares the stage with another player, he plays with them, often taking the "secondary" role and letting them take the staring role. I have yet to see Tommy live in concert struck with how much a gentleman he seems to be.
@jamnjubester ABSOLUTELY, YOU'RE RIGHT, i DON'T CARE HOW MANY ALBUMS YOU SELL TO COUNTRY FANS, pAISLEY KNOWS HE'S OVERMATCHED BUT DID IT ANYWAY. yOU HEARD HIM, HIS TEACHER THAT HE LOOKS UP TO THINKS tOMMY'S THE BEST. iT SPEAKS WELL OF bRAD.
@ReubenAdkins I disagree. I'm not a huge Brad Paisley fan, but he is an extremely accomplished guitarist. Though I prefer Tommy, Brad is nowhere near overrated.
@ReubenAdkins I love tommy as he is probably my guitar god, but to say that comment after the way he has Jammed right in front of you, and done excellent work with John Mayer tells me that you most certainly need to practice more, and chose your words better.
@brianfurchner You have your opinion and I have mine, thank you. And as far as choosing words, you may be well served to choose your wisely as well. As far as me practicing more, I'll cut heads with you anytime.
@ReubenAdkins So your on eof those guys who spends his wallowing hours trying to compare his styles and rates or berates others. Good on ya, but then again, as you do have an opinion, mine is as follows, your off keel, and you know nothing of my guitar knowledge and ability. But after the comment you made based on your assessment of these performers, it sure speaks for itself.....check out Vince Gill, Tony Rice, et al. You probably thought Lenny Breau is over-rated also....cheers.
@brianfurchner Hey buddy, you started this! I didn't get defensive until you opened your big mouth about how I'm wrong and how I should practice more? I honestly don'y give a damn how well you play or don't play and, I don't Paisley's playing.......big damn deal! Gill, Rice and Lenny Breau are great players as Tommy Emmanuel is. You my friend are a jack ass.......
@ReubenAdkins #1 Point, Im not your friend need to to size up yourself before you rant. I made a point to exercise my own opinion, not limited to you just having yours, like lighting a fire and running away, only to return to see the destruction it causes....theres a word for that, take a guess.....enjoy life sir, cus your too hyper....no more from you, blocked, done....buh bye
@brianfurchner That's fine by me. I'm in no way "hyper" as you call it, only defending myself. You're the typical "you don't like my favorite player, so you should go practice" kinda guy. I've seen your videos......YOU need the practice, pal. I have no more time for you......you are blocked as well.
@DerisedEgami That is one of the best ideas I've heard in a very long idea! And you know what? I'd also love to see Paisley and Steve Wariner do an album together along the lines of the albums that Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed did together.
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Tommy live this past summer when he was on tour with his brother Phil. They finally toured New England and it was a show I'll never forget. What a musical genius he is. I think Brad is an excellent player also but Tommy is in a class by himself much like his hero and mentor Chet Atkins. If you are just seeing Tommy for the first time, check out his version of Tall Fiddler. What he does seems impossible but he makes it look easy. Absolutely brilliant!
I dont really care for country music.I am a huge tommy Emmanuel fan and student and I knew who Brad was but I did not know Brad could play that well.In my opinion he did a great job and his lead actually sounded cleaner than Tommy....
@DanaAcoustic two different guitars, maton vs larivee. two differnt styles thumb and fingers vs pick and fingers. tommy's just plain better on this song. brads a tele player
I knew both guitarists were great, but why wasn't Emmanuel one of the guest artists on Paisley's 2008 album PLAY? I think Paisley needs to do another 'guitar album' and have Emmanuel on it this time.
I bet it's not often Brad gets his hat handed to him onstage like this. Tommy doesn't pull punches, no matter who you are. Looks they had a blast though.
Brad's acoustic tone blows here. What's up with that? I love both these guys. What a treat to see them together.
Love Tommy's playing... Only ever saw Brad before 'cos the lucky bastard duets with the beautiful Allison Kraus on a 5 chord easy-peasy tune of his (Whisky Lullaby). Never knew he could really play the geetar like this. Respect due to you Brad. (but yer hat's still too big! ha ha )
@toejam498 Yeah, I don't think Brad brought Tommy on stage to cut heads with him, it was to showcase and have the honor of playing with him. I feel Brad's guitar playing is actually underrated, probably because he steals the show from himself with his singing, songwriting, stage show, personality, etc. Looks like everyone had tons of fun!
Thank you thank you thank you for posting this!!! I had this saved on my DVR and the equipment crapped the bed before I got around to burning a copy! It was (and is again) one of my faves of all time!!! Somehow I had lived Thirty some years without ever hearing about Tommy Emmanuel prior to this! Sheltered life!
