I saw both the original and the remake back-to-back for the first time a few nights ago. The original was pretty good, though I felt the ending was kind of rushed. Then I saw the remake and thought it was also pretty good. Definately enjoyable in its own way.

Jackie Earl Haley also did a good job as Freddy. He wasn't Englund, but he wasn't trying to be him. As far as remakes go, it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
