Perfectly understand where you are coming from/ Fortunately my department is small enough that we pretty much talk plainly - but as you go up the chain you start hearing more and more of it. Seems to be the way of the world - what Orwell called doublespeak. So it had been going on for a while.
After my place of work was taken over by a different company, the staff kept hearing R.O.E...(Retention Of Employment) which basically means...we won't give you the sack...yet!
The first time I got caught out was when I rang a company and they said they would put me through to "HR" - hadn't a clue what that meant even after teh converstaion. I later discovered it was what we used to call "the blonde chick with the nice tits in the personel department" - I will never catch up with these acronyms and political correctness
Throughout my academic career, especially from Graduate school through my years of teaching at a University, I rebelled against the use of academic jargon as an elitist tactic.. My position on the subject caused me no end of abuse at the hands of the establishment that academic jargon serves. It wasn't pretty, but I still maintain that I am right and they are wrong. One word sums jargon up -obfuscation - The activity of obscuring people's understanding, leaving them baffled or bewildered. :-)
I've lost count of the number of times I've heard a manager at my place say "we are where are"... as if to say, no point looking at how we got where we are but now we're there, lets deal with it! One of many buzz phrases.
What the world needs is more plain speaking...

Agreed. Can't say it more plainly than that :)

I'd forgotten about Orwell's Doublespeak. I guess that's the same sort of thing. Well spotted Danny.
I think your experience at work is pretty normal. The management speak does seem to get worse the higher you climb :)

I for my part sometimes like complicated English language. Because I can learn some new words then ;)

You're not the first person who has told me that.
So, YouTube can be educational as well :)

That's a new one to me, but exactly the sort of rubbish i was talking about :)

We have the same problem with bullshit in Congress!
Like the up-light, it gives you a bit of a sage advisor look:-)

"A sage advisor look" eh?
I just thought i'd try it with the lights off (so to speak!)
I do think that all Governments etc suffer from this disease. If only there was a cure for it :)

Oh man... now I want so badly to go to an executive meeting and shout, "BINGO!!"
LOL
Actually, that recent fury over Facebook's revised TOS was sort of rooted in poorly chosen management speak, right?
Too funny you'd bring this up now. Diana teased me recently for spouting off "twenty dollar words" one of the last times we chatted.
I was doing it without realising.
:-)

Unfortunately, you'd probably only get to do it once. before they "let you go" ;)
Agreed on the Facebook thing.
I love the "twenty dollar words" expression. I may have to remember that one :)

I think a lot of people talk in buzzwords cause they think it makes them hip and "in the know" in their own minds.
You can't go to a lecture in my field today without hearing words like R.O.I or others and it is silly as you said.

I agree. so many people think it sounds clever. Little do they know.... :)

Yay for the rebels & power to the people.
"Obfuscation" What a great word & one that sums up exactly what i was talking about :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
Words. Huh. Good, God, y'all.
What are they good for?
Absoloutely nothing.
Say it again!

I'll have to check that one out. I like Peter Sellers...my mom loves that Pink Panther series. Imagine being able to cut through the BS! lol

It's a great film & the book is good too. As i said, it's not really a comedy. But, it does have it's moments :)

You look like The Frozen Ghost, only you're not blue!
I'm old now so I'm totally out of the loop when it comes to any new jargon.
And since I'm old, I don't care that I'm not cool any more. That's a big plus of being old! :)

Maybe i can be The Thawed Ghost?
Don't worry, old can be cool as well. Well, i certainly hope so anyway! :)

I haven't heard that phrase about my workplace very much, thankfully.
I do find myself reading some company literature, especially training stuff & wondering what on earth they are talking about! :)

I agree sometimes I try to understand what people are saying when it came to my old bosses.
I can understand half of what they are saying but other times I go "OK" when I really mean what?
BarryAldridge 2 years ago
I know what you mean.
i think a lot of the time people just nod & pretend to understand, when what they really mean is WTF! :)
