Just want to say that the end of vid / where ya show kelvingrove park bandstand, is so sad. I remember going to a couple concerts there in the mid 80s. When friends bands played. I remember seeing the band Glasgow and unsure of the year im thinking 86 or 87. Fond memories. So sad to see nothing can be done to fix that place up if i ever had a million bucks id come over and pay to restore it :) Another place i use to go was The Venue weekly.. rocknroll !
I also played on that stage in the 80s - it had always been an ambition of mine having been born a couple of miles up the road from there. I took my kids to see the old bandstand a couple of weeks ago after a trip to the galleries and could not believe the state of the place - it is incredible that it has been allowed to go to rack & ruin, and it will be criminal if GCC allow it to disappear altogether.
That didn't read as well as I meant it; I meant how many potential musicians, ie people whose talents were captured for positive things such as making music, may have been resorting to vandalism as a means of expressing themselves (POSS EVEN A FEW AT THE BIG OFFICE IN GEORGE SQUARE)
To see what the bandstand could look like, click on the BFI website of Kelvingrove park in 1926...oh dear...how many people who might be musicians were involved in the wrecking of this part of Glasgow's finest park. I am from Stirling but have lived in Liverpool for the past 2 years, they are spending money on the equivalent park here "Sefton Park" and it is making a difference. Maybe the bandstand at West End Park will yet be saved.Give people a chance to enjoy music on the weekends.
Thank you. I hope they ARE redeveloping this area. I played a few Sunday afternoon gigs there during the late 70s. Most memorable was 'dancing baby'. A couple on the front step had a wee girl about 18 months on reins. She started bopping in time to the music and completely stole the show. It was one of the cutest things I've ever seen.
Sadly I believe the council has allowed the "bandstand" to decay in an attempt to "create" an excuse to pull it down (it's listed - and much loved by Glaswegians) and sell the plot to pub/club developers.
Lovely wee film though! So what was your band in the 70's Alister? I probably saw you! ;-)
