  • I guessed 137, one less and I would be female.

  • come on guys, about that 2856 number, if you are into mentalism, you will know how it is done and that woman was not a stooge or any sort. And the second paper is and can be the paper with the real values.. Cheers!

  • THINK ABOUT THIS!!!: there were 4 sweats in each row, 9 rows in each line (approximetly), 4 * 9 = 36 ... 36 * 4 = 144. not far off

  • man how many wunch was of the bankers

  • Hi all

    its a very simple trick

3 people are involved: the woman who write the numers on the paper the woman with the exact 136 score and the guy who hold the paper (hold that for a second)

the only number you see is the first woman who writes 301 on the paper.......

(take a look at the distance between the start of the paper and the 301 you can put a whole hand between) (thats important you will see later)

you dont see the numbers of the other people...

  • the fake beginns as he let the guy hold the paper (hold that for a second please)

why he dont put it on the floor like he do 5 minutes later...... (because the change the paper at this moment)

you dont see the guy who holds it and he is out of camera angel....

after a lot of blah blah he get the paper (fake) back (take a closer look at 301 on the second paper the distance between the start of the paper and the 301 you can only put 2 fingers between)

  • so its no big deal he knows everthing about that woman because shes involved.....

and its no big deal to come up to the number 2856 because you only see the 301 on the first paper.....

the second paper is complete fake all the numbers are written down before the show starts.....

  • @GabrielVIII easier to notice is the space between 3 and 0... on the original you have it: its ca. 1 cm, on the other board 3 and 0 touches each other... i agree, the whole show is a fake bullshit....

  • I wish our bankers were this good with numbers when it comes to the american taxpayers money..

  • My analysis:

Derren got some information on the girl beforehand (that old stalker ^^) and then subconsciously gave her this number. This is what he does everyday. Nothing special for Derren.

It is HIGHLY unlike that they get the EXACT number without any decimal places.

It may be possible that the girl writing is a stooge which is good at numbers and just adds all the numbers in her head to come to 2856 in the end. Anyways, wisdom of crowds is real, thats for sure though.

    Nice trick in either case

  • Yeap, wisdom of crowds at its best.

  • 4:28 to 4:40 his neck spazes out or something

  • This is an easily obtainable 'magic trick' listed in the category of mind reading that one can easily purchase online. Derren has mastered the art of presentation!!

  • Fake

  • I don't think he switched the board. I've looked at the first number written and it looks the same from start to finish. Possibly the board writer is in on the act, and has been mentally adding up the numbers all along, and then adding one or more numbers at the end to make the right number. I'm not sure there are really 21 people in the group, or whether they all stepped up to give her a number. Some may have skipped.

  • The fact that the overall average is exactly 136 seems weird, or at least pretty lucky. Makes the whole thing look like a fake even more, I guess. Not that it's impossible, I mean - I know the law of large numbers, but it's still nothing more than an estimation.

  • thumbs up to the winner

  • HAHA DICK WEED!

  • The law of averages trick is well established - such as in the book 'The Wisdom of Crowds' (also the name of this episode). Ironic that he chose a group of brokers for the trick - using the law of averages/regression to the mean is the whole basis of the stock market. The only real puzzle is the young lady. They presumably 'suggested' the number 136 beforehand, and wrote a description of her. Fair guess that a broker would have another 'money' person in the family.

  • described the girl pre-hand and decided to use whatever number she wrote down. obviously more than 136 in the jar so thats why he mentioned "theres more than gumballs in the middle". then he swapped a couple numbers around (not all of them) to make 136. notice he handed the board to someone in the front-right, so he probably switched the numbers of the people in the back-left. earpiece/microphone transmit the easiest # to switch. which is why they put a microphone on the lady in the first place

  • girl was part of the trick, board you see on the floor is a cut scene with "301" at the top and "108, 112, 101" on the side, so that you believe its the same board.. in actuality the audience has no idea what the numbers add up to, so they just say a number that sounds believable.. and they arent allowed to tell eachother their numbers bc they would figure it all out

  • People who don't get stuck in miscounting and retrying to count one for one numbers beyond let's say 100, gotta be flat minded - can be intelligent tough - but still flat.

  • I believe this is a demonstrable phenomenon - that the mean of a group's guesses is at least not bad and overall better than the individual guesses. That's what he means by "the wisdom of crowds." It was maybe just luck that it landed exactly on 136. I have no clue how he got the individual's guess.

  • if he starts performing in Vegas, he would kill Criss angel's career completely

  • Not necessarily.

Reality doesn't always beat fantasy and illusion.

But I like your idea and your style.

  • @deadmanavir

This guy is way superior to Criss Angel!

  • @countsmyth Thats pretty much what he's saying.

This guy could mind trick Criss Angel and David Blaine into having sex with each other. Hmm. Come to think of it, it wouldn't be much of an achievement.

  • My theory: Someone programmed the calculator to display 2856 each time multiple numbers were added up or just if the answer is greater than 300 or so, the answer is programmed to become 2856. Then with that answer, all you have to do is divide by 21 to get 136. Since not all of the numbers were shown, you would never be able to figure this out. It makes sense when you can program calculators. :)

  • Comment removed

  • That would work in theory, ValkEvil, but the board of numbers (which, as others have suggested, was probably swapped), could have been checked to see if the numbers added up to 2856.

A more feasible explanation would be that an "extra" number was substituted to make the total 2856. Because the volunteers were told not to discuss their numbers with others, it would be difficult to prove if and where this extra number had been inserted.. People tend to guess in numbers ending in 0 or 5 ...

  • (continued)...for example 2 people guessed "125", so it would be easy to remove one such of these guesses and subsitute it with the number needed to make 2856, and consequently the mean of 136.

As previously suggested, the girl and number were picked out by DB early on in the writing- down process and the candies added to to make 136 in the jar to bowl transfer process.

  • (continued). .. Also, the card saying 136 is under the jar just before DB reveals the number, but on the table (not under the jar) at the beginning of the video, so the number could have been inserted once the girl and 136 had been chosen.

  • Well if you think about it, you never saw him take the board with him in the movie. That is the most crucial part in doing this magic trick, not letting others add up the numbers they guessed. By distracting everyone, most of them most likely forgot their numbers. He obviously talked to the girl to set this up. She never shows the number on the calculator after the calculations either. I see what you mean by swaping the borads but if you want the board in full view the whole time, use my method.

  • You can see all 21 numbers on the "swapped" board at 5:28 of the video, and they do in fact add up to 2856 (check it!) which divides perfectly by 21 to give 136.

I don't think the girl was set up. DB chose her before the trick started, and wrote the scroll details, like her ring, bright shoes, silver jewelry and army jacket. The info about the banking relative on her mother's was the only thing that DB had to guess, and with a 50/50 chance of him being correct he chose well.

  • One word for all of you: mentalism.

Andy Nyman and Luke Jermay are awesome mentalist and both of them work for DB. What DB could have done before the show is influence the girl to pick 136. Message in the jar: cold reading.

As for the numbers adding up: mentalism.

Girl who was adding it up wasnt a stooge, calculator was pre-set(mentalism),

Now the question is: what would happen if the girl didnt select 136? Well thats the thing about mentalism, theres always the "what if?" question :D

  • DB must've influenced the people. When they would look up at the jar, he would probably use NLP to influence their decision to get the correct number. That OR DB's crew was listening to all the people's numbers through that chicks microphone and calculated to make sure it was correct:P

  • I just had to calculate it...i estimated about 200.

  • and alot of monkey poo thats funny

  • that is soo intriguing....

  • I like the self mockery and humility by DB at 3.30. It looks like Barnum/Cold Reading but gradually gets more precise ending with pin pointing the army shirt that the girl is wearing.

  • i guessed 143

  • HOLY CRAP!!! I GOT IT RIGHT!!!

(caps makes it true, you know)

  • dam 173

  • bullocks.. I feel it's more logical to believe this is a hoax. This kind of stuff is incredibly easy to make look real on camera.. now if I saw this live.. I might have to reconsider (depending on how much they showed me)

  • LOLL ok, whatever.

  • yeah maybe it was a popular game about 200 years ago, but i have never heard ofa game people counting sweets in a jar

  • @thampex maybe u need to get out of the house

  • Did anyone else hear him say "In america, I wondered if I could get a Wunch of Bankers..." Wunch of Bankers? Bunch of Wankers.

  • @underdog5004 LOL!

  • Upon further googling, the proper term for a group of bankers is a "wunch."

    ~~The More You Know~~

  • He picked a girl, subliminally make her say 136, and then write down her characteristics. The rest is just wisdom of crowds, which is not a trick

  • At 0:49, while Derren's talking about "a special job", a girl steps behind the victim, who turns around. At 0:55 she seems talking to her. We dont know if those guys knew each other (they work in a big place), she could easily be disguised as a banker, while being Derren's accomplice. So my shot is: Derren asks everyone to participate, he chooses the girl, put the scroll in the jar and asks the accomplice to stay close to her, influencing her choice with Derren usual skills.

  • @gbluitar

That was very observant of you!

  • As did I. 146.

  • Me too 146

  • psychic? Derren Brown himself says that there is no such thing as being psychic, that it's a load of rubbish

  • Wisdom of Crowds is Interesting for sure, but the crowd needs to know something about the topic in question if it is to be accurate. Here they obviously have basic knowledge. The part in the middle is bogus - that is just an illusion and a pity. The fact that 136 came about also suggests foul play - sometimes means are just not whole numbers, but it would 'ruin' the entertainment value if 134.9 had appeared, so I suggest someone was running the numbers and the mean of 136 was ensured.

  • It is indeed very odd indeed. I would've liked to see the "addition" come out to a slight bit higher and indeed round off downwards makes it more credible.

  • WTF I FUCKING GUESSED 136. sweet

  • If you pause it when she is sticking her hand in to get the scroll, there are 74 visible gumballs. There is no effing way that that only contains 136. I call shenanigans

  • he says there is something else in the jar, thats why there are only 136 balls.

  • Yeah that tiny scroll, it would only take up the space of like 10 balls. MAYBE 10, if im being generous

  • Haha! a wunch of bankers!!

  • Hahahahahhahaahhaha!

  • @regi1873

You can't expect much from bankers and accountants.

Anyone who is willing to dedicate their lives to low/medium level money management would have to have the personality of a dead wombat.

  • lol median is not equal to mean..if you pass your statistics i dont know why you cant differentiate it...ive done this with people in all of them run scared! hahahahahaha

  • I've actually done this in class. The correct number was 146 and everybody had a close range of numbers. I answered the mean of the numbers and got 146. After our teacher announced we got the number right, my mates where stunned. :)

  • i said 136 and the way i did it was.... i put the candy in the jar. beat that derren brown.

  • Excellent use of cold-reading and barnam statements (with good people-reading too of course).

  • I don't understand what the use of barnam statements is here. Not everyone has a cat, or has an accountant on their mother's side, or wears what she does... actually, the physical description of her likely wouldn't have fit anyone else there. ? .

  • hhmm don't know why this is marked up because on teh contrary, you're wrong.

"bright shoes" = barnam. White is bright, most all nonblack shoes converge to teh vague "bright" adjective.

physical description, are you crazy?? "simple colors" Unless they're wearing tye-dyed hippie shirts, everyone has simple colors

ponytail -- there's a lot of ponytails in that crowd

army-style top -- any dark colored top would fulfill that blurred description.

  • I think a mathematical-oriented person would be more apt to have a cat than some other field (stereotype and generality)

motherside accountant...that's a stretch, but maybe accountants have frequent family lineage? haha i don't know about hat one .

And note that I said barnam statements AND good people-reading. Both were utilized and fully explain this one.

  • I guessed 142 not a bad guess

  • was it just me or did this take ages to load..

  • i actually guessed 150 at the beginning so yay!

  • Actually, the mean is a type of average. There are three types of averages: the mean, the median, and the mode. The median is the number in the middle, the mode is the number that shows up the most, and the mean is the number you get when you add all of the numbers together and divide by how many numbers you added up (this is also called leveling out the data.)

So Derren is correct, he did use the mean in this case:]

  • You're correct. Actually I was thinking the median when I made that comment. I guess it's a good thing I don't work in a bank!. LOL

  • i thot the mean and the average is the same thing. At least its the same way to calculate em.

  • Is this a popular game in England?

  • yes at old fashioned fairs that sometimes some people go to

  • i love the responses from skeptics, the frustration of being fooled, lol

  • hahahaa

    i know

    r u a mentalist urself?

  • far from but in the study of, nlp is ingenious, tapping into our minds and of others...to me seems to be the most intuitive skill a person can have

  • she wants to have sex with him yesterday!

  • Can anyone please explain how he came up with the average of exactly "136"? Surely, its not just a mathematical result as many here suggest. Since, lets assume there was one more guy in the experiment and if he had guessed a bit lower or higher than 136, then the average wouldnt hit 136. There is certainly some trick involved. Does anyone have a good explanation?

  • I'm guessing that someone off camera was tampering with the numbers on the board while the attention was on Darren- notice nobody in the group seems to have doublechecked that their number was still correctly on there. Or maybe they influenced the first girl to hear and record numbers they preferred. Who knows! Entertaining though.

  • the thing about derren is that he's right almost all the time... and when he isn't right... he tends to trick the people into thinking he's right... if they're in a sort of trance, they'll pretty much just agree with anything he says... but try this as an example: tell someone to think of a 2 digit number between 1 and 50. both digits must be odd.. but they can't be the same digit like 33. it seems like a wide range but the only valid numbers are 31 35 37 39.. they'll almost always say 37..

  • 13,15,17,19?

  • beacsue he said dont use 33 as an example, you will pick another nimber in the 30s

  • yeah what about 13 15 17 and 19?

  • I'm assuming Derren said something to each person right before they made their guess (we can hear him say it to the first three) and influenced (well, controlled) their choice. If that's true, he could've easily worked out which numbers were needed to yield the correct mean beforehand.

  • I was thinking the word SIX automatic when he said SWEETS he probably say other to get 3 and one. He kinda said it with a lot of pressure.

    Did anyone else notice that?

  • 2:28 did he say fucking congratulations, sounded like it xD

  • "well, congratulations."

  • wunch of bankers .. haha

  • ah.. WTF?

did he say a "wunch of bankers" or "bunch of wankers" ??? 0:10

  • Wunch of bankers, but that's the point :P hahaha the subcoinscious also hears 'bunch of wankers'

  • a bunch of BANKERS....

  • Damn this is crazy stuff.. Did anyone else, midway through the video, think that he was going to get the mean of the group and that would be correct? I don't know if it was me being weird or some NLP that got me in the video.

  • i had the exact same thought lol

  • people who write fake this fake that are unfortunatley bad communicators who talk more than they listen. they smile less and their partners dont really like them either. poor things, you are not as smart as you think you are. ask your family and friends.

  • yes asshole, and that's why ppl waching derren brown and just not reading any shits writen by u.

  • Dumb and racist, what a catch :)

  • Why are you saying I'm racist?

  • did they get to eat the candy !! lol

  • lol! Wunch of bankers!

  • did the same thing, found a good frame to count all the pieces on one side and figure you need at least 140 to cover all four sides. That doesn't include the top or bottom, etc. So this jar definetely has more than 136 pieces. Total set up with girl in green , along with whatever math he's using.

  • so if it was a set up with the girl, why would he have to lie about the amount of pieces in the jar?

lets say its not fake, the point of the game was that he predicted what the girl would guess, doesnt matter of many it actually is in the jar.

  • I would be hard pressed to believe that there is only 136 pieces of candy

my reasoning behind that i did a quick count of just one side, counting over 40. so lets say 40 * 4 = 160, so you would have to have more than 136 or whatever just to cover the sides

  • it's a round jar. it doesn't have multiple sides. from a geometry stand point, there's one side.

  • smartass

  • vinnyuboy,

yes welldone, how clever but lets all see you bitch if u see a live show, then wheres the tricks arsehole

  • she was hot

  • so fake!

  • great trick! no secret influencing here... Derren Brown is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but to anyone with any knowledge of mentalism some of his tricks are much more transparent than others.

  • lmao wunch of bankers...british way of Bunch of wankers lol and fake

  • fake! u know how i know? that gangsta in the yankees hat is no way in the banking business

  • yes he is, bank robber.

  • hahaha

  • lol good call

  • Prove it.

  • he may just have influenced her through other means to come up with 136, like he regularlymaeks people come up with numbers or objects etc.

  • I wouldn't mind exploding all over that blonde girls face.

  • Notice how he calls them a "wunch of bankers." That's a reference to a British joke about bankers - they're a "bunch of wankers."

  • Ha! I didn't notice that 1st time XD

  • i saw this on e4 lastnight and didnt notice it either, i always thought i would be imune to derrens tricks.

  • i liked this video :)

hi anyone want to chat XG

  • I can't believe I'm the only guy that has noticed this but the gum balls are placed in a special pattern in the jar it forms the numbers blue forms number eight, white forms an odd repeated pattern the importance of the pinkish purple is there is only one clearly visible in the front. the board switch I didn't watch for but I can tell you right now it is highly likely that the numbers she added up were not the original numbers because the number 301 was a plant because its a common #... darts

  • I saw that, the colors seemed to aligned in a pattern.

  • some nice fanny works in that bank

  • LoL! xD at 00:10 "Wunch of Bankers"

  • notics he kind of implies the word "bell" "job" "number" "gear" "figures" "person number 1"

  • haha "a wunch of bankers"

  • xDD

  • the boards are definitely switched. on the second board the 301 is much closer to the edge than the first one and also the second boards 301 is bigger.

  • he hasnt aswitched boards, teh 3 mid touches the O, and the 1 is not far off hte 0, if you watch the vid and pause it, you can see

  • yea ill have to agree with a previous post regarding the board switch.

you can clearly see that the 301 at first and the second 301 is different. look at their distances from the 2 edges. they probably changed one or 2 numbers to add up to a multiple of 136.

  • at the start he says "a wunch of bankers" which if you swap the first letter of the words you get "a bunch of wankers" lol :)

  • lol, did he just compare monkeys to americans?

  • I like that theory my friend^^

  • i am an american. :(

  • In that case, sorry. i am not. Good luck with the elections.

  • lol, its ok, for some reason people always sees us as stupid monkeys.

  • I'm generally against that, but I like joking about it. I guess we all have some idiots. Only in USA people take trouble searching for them

  • well, yeah, you right.Last week i shaved my name into my cousins leg while he was sleeping, lol, it was funny

  • I guessed right also. although that tends to be my guess for everything that it fits without making me look like an idiot. That number is sort of a special number for me.

And "Surely with the group one it's just law of averages." That is the most likely way to get it right. NLP has nothing to do with it. He would have to constantly control EVERYONE. It's hard enough controlling just one person, or even just a few for him.

  • my first guess was 136, before i changed to 186 after I saw the lady wrote 300 something and second guessed myself. so i guess there must be some subliminal suggestion going on

  • Why would a person who "works in the field of brokerage" have experience reading in front of a crowds? If she wasn't a plant she wouldn't have read the letter so eloquently. She said it all like she had said it many times before or had it memorized beforehand. This is fake horseshit.

  • ''she wouldn't have read the letter so eloquently''

that is so not true. something such as that is completely easy to read quickly and without mistakes, whatever your job is : )

  • You're easily impressed. I don't think she read it particularly eloquently - she speaks slowly and pauses frequently whilst processing the information. Her eyes remain on the paper at all times. You don't need "experience reading in front of crowds". If you aren't able to do the same then you have reading problems.

  • I dont understand why this is so hard to believe, its not a miracle, its a simple math riddle, honestly there are 1000s of people that peform this trick.

  • I think he sent a sms to all the peopele

containing covert text of the number each

person has the qes. Remeber he say "does that ring any bells to you". Listen to what he is saying and you will quickly find out that it was all pre arranged subcontiousy.

  • i always wanted to do a chick in the butty with bright shoes.

  • Candy!!! i want one.

  • omg i guessed rite

  • any ideas on how the fuck this works?

  • Surely with the group one it's just law of averages. So, everyone looks and has a different method. so some will guess over, some under, some(like the girl) will guess right. If you look at the board at 5:28, most numbers run 100 to 170 (136 in middle). Some well below 100 and some well above 170. These are outliers and cancel each other out. So when he does the mean, should be around the number(great television to actually hit it). If he had 5 people doing it, less chance, with 100, more chance

  • perhaps he subconsciously suggested the numbers to each person as he does with suggestive NLP

  • True, but that assumes that people do not have a high tendency towards over or underestimation. You must admit it is impressive that they got spot on with just over 20 people.

  • A bunch of monkeys in a room typing.. isn't that what the internet is?!

  • Haha, the only difference is there is more S**t on the internet than in the infinitely large room.

  • Hahaha, couldn't be more true :)

  • "a wunch of bankers"

  • Bunch of Wankers ;0)

  • Not sure why, but at the beginning, he says: "Wunch of bankers" instead of "bunch of bankers." I think he may have been insinuating that they're wankers.

  • you're very intelligent.

  • Fixed?

  • OMG, I guessed 136! :-O

    (just kidding)

Seriously, though, I wonder how he did this one...
